I assume you're going to get Openreach to put their hand in their back pocket and waive the excess construction charges for this user then, Neil? Or is just being snide and unhelpful 'from my iPad' on mailing lists your thing now? ;) Will On 16 Jan 2014, at 20:13, Neil J. McRae n...@domino.org wrote: 3G how quaint. Will, From an equivalence point of view I can¹t make openreach do anything they wouldn¹t do for anyone else. However, I think there might be another solution and I¹m already looking into this! Re: [uknof] Help for Scouts
I wouldn't bother trying to find a 3G provider who'll give you a static IP. Instead get a regular data SIM eg from Giffgaff For your IP requirements rent a virtual machine (5 USD / month from Digital Ocean or considerably cheaper 10 GBP per year if you don't mind taking more of risk with reliability: check out lowendbox.com). Then you just need a router that'll act as a VPN client to link to the Virtual Machine. You might be able to find an off-the-shelf device that'll do this for you (try someone like Draytek) but I'd simply install OpenWRT onto something like a TP-Link TL-MR3020 (25 GBP). It can then operate your 3G USB dongle, maintain an IPsec VPN to your VM and expose the connectivity over Wifi Ethernet. Good solution, another option for Virtual Machines only a budget would be Bytemarks' BigV @ £10/month. Couple of the guys from Bytemark will be at UKNOF27. Chris
