Donemana & Dungannon Petty Sessions Oct. 1901

Donemana Petty Sessions were held on Friday, 18 before
Messrs. J.W.E. DUNSTERVILLE R.M., James MATHERS J.P., and John
ROSBOROUGH J.P., District-Inspector DUNLOP was also in attendance.

Constable GILLICK charged Thos. DUNNE Donemana with being drunk and
disorderly on 26 September. Fined 5s and costs.

Same complainant charged the same defendant with assaulting him on 26
Sept. by striking him with an ash-plant. Mr. DUNSTERVILLE administered
a strong caution to the defendant, a lad of 14, on his start in life,
getting drunk and assaulting the police. The Court inflicted a fine of
10s. 6d. and costs.

Michael DUNNE, father to the above defendant was charged by
Acting-sergeant O'DOWELL with being drunk and disorderly on 26
September. fined 2s. 6d. and costs.

Constable GILLICK charged Andrew LACK of Killiney, a local
horse-dealer, with being drunk and disorderly on 26 September, by
using filthy and abusive language. Fined 10s. 6d. and costs.

Acting-sergeant M'DOWELL charged Joseph LOVE Cavanacrigh with being
drunk on 28 September. This being his 5th offence within the past 12
months was fined £1 and costs.

Constable STONE charged same defendant with being drunk on 26
September. Fined £1 and coats.

Constable STONE charged John O'HARA a Strabane celebrity, with being
drunk on 26 September Donemana. Fined 10s. 6d. and costs.

Acting-sergeant M'DOWELL charged James WALLACE Donemana with being
drunk on 14 October. It being his 5th offence inside 12 months he was
fined £2, or a month.

David BRATTEN, Drummond, summoned Samuel CRAIG of Drummond, with
unlawfully assaulting him on 26 September, at Donemana, by striking
him with a stone, causing the blood to flow out of his bead. BRATTEN
stated that without any cause CRAIG hit him. He also stated that
Constable GILLICK saw the assault. Constable GILLICK was called and
stated he was standing at his own door when he saw CRAIG following
BRATTEN up the street and say something to him. BRATTEN turned round,
when CRAIG hit him with a box in the breast.BRATTEN put up his hand
and said I do not want to have anything to with you.’’CRAIG ran at
him, and hit him twice with a stone in his hand on the side of the
bead, causing the blood to flow from him. I ran over to where they
were, when CRAIG dropped the stone (produced) on the ground, stating
he must have carried it in his pocket, for it was quite dry at the
time. I brought BRATTEN to the barracks, where his head was dressed.
Defendant was convicted, and ordered to be imprisoned in Derry Jail
for 7 days, with hard labour. During the hearing of the cases an old
and respected member, who held the Commission of the Peace under her
late Majesty, in the person of Mr. James MOORE (sen.), of Loughash,
appeared on the Bench, and was warmly welcomed by the magistrates
present. He immediately took the oath and his seat on the Bench as
magistrate for county Tyrone.

Constable NEVILLEcharged Robert GALBRAITH with being drank <sic> on
the public street on 28 sept. Fined 1s and costs.

Constable NEVILLE Donemana charged a local publican under the Food and
Drugs Act, but owing to defendant being unable to appear, the case was
adjourned to next Court day. Mr. ELLIOTT solicitor, Strabane, appeared
in support of the signing of the certificate licence of D. B. HOLMES
which was opposed by the police on last Court day, the place being
closed from November last. HOLMES himself appeared in person, and
after being examined, the magistrates signed the certificate.

Dungannon Petty sessions

The bi-monthly town court was held yesterday before Messrs. Robert
NEWtoN J.P. (presiding); A. T. TODD M.D., J.P.; Chas. B. M. CHAMBRE
J.P., and Joseph M. DOYLE J.P.

Several cases of drunkenness were dealt with. The petty sessions court
was afterwards held, before the same magistrates.

Messrs. DICKSON & Co., Dungannon, summoned William ANDERSON, Brook
Street, for having maliciously damaged a dwelling-house tenanted by
his sister Kate ANDERSON. Mr. McGLAUGHLIN, solicitor, appeared for the
complainant. Five shillings compensation was awarded and the defendant
was also fined 2s. 6d. and costs

Kate ANDERSON charged the same defendant with having used threats
towards her, but as he did not appear a warrant for his arrest was
issued.

Constable RABBETT Coalisland, charged John NEILL, Derry, Coal island,
with having been drunk and disorderly at Gortgonis the 27th July last.
Mr. McGLAUGHLIN, solicitor, defended and Thomas CAIRNS, John STEWART,
Joseph MARSHALL and Robert NEILL were examined to prove that the
defendant was sober, and had himself been assaulted by a man named
GATES. The majority of the magistrates dismissed the case without
prejudice.
