n a side note. I was wondering if you have looked at the Virtual Appliance
build yet? If so, what are your thoughts and opinions on it? It is totally
separate from this project and was designed to be used in the VMWARE world.

Doh!

I think a VM is a neat idea, but;
forcing people asking on the mail-list with questions for password
is plain stupid and unnecessary.
If you had made _Just_A_Simple_ README and this would be an nonissue.

2008-03-19 Thread Mario Gzuk
Hi,
so now I think its time to say some thing about I feel like I am in
a kindergarten on this list if I read the messages the last 2-3 days.
Can you tell me how old you are? Or better leave it unanswered to me an
answer yourself. (And I mean not only ONE person, everybody should think
about it)

Kerr Avon, maybe you have ever read the GPL?:
http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html

So this gives you the answer WHY anybody can do with your virtual
machine what he want because you have published it and the software in
it is mainly GPL Licenced. It not depend that the software you use for
creating this stuff is not "free" (but if you can read, there are a lot
of free tools from vmware (e.g vmware-server) which ARE free).
And it also do not depend that it took you time and patience to complete
this "project". If you have write own scripts in this virtual machine
you can set them under an other licence. And it is NOT your own script
if you write a smb.conf for samba, because this is part of the GPL
licenced software.
Think a little bit about "open source" and the mind behind the idea of
free software. I hope your knowledge will be helpful for the project in
the future! So simple throwaway all bad words from both sides and try to
work together!

I think we all want only one thing. And that is: "make the life easy". M
$ and other affiliated groups make us the work hard enough, so lets pull
ourself together and work against the bad job from the others...

I hope no one feels defensive while reading this text, if so I want to
say sorry. But this are only facts.

greetings mario

put you ego down man, check the repository history, development mailing
list. It has nothing to do with your VM. I never download you VM, and
the first notice was all those emails asking for passwords. I do not
think that the other developers started when you first publish your VM.

Remeber that you were complain because there were lack of interest on
Virtual Machines.

The main reason 4.7 was out was because there are some patches to
replace the dos emulator. So I wanted to ensure the dos emulator was
using a new kernel to give support to latest network cards.

I am please if you stay around and help, but lets ensure that we are not

The only reservation I'd share with you is with respect to operating
system security updates.

  http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/LifeCycle

Fedora Core 4 has been unsupported for sometime now, so if there is
any known exploits, or an exploit becomes known, there is the
potential for this appliance to be compromised in some way.

If you have your appliance preparation documented or scripted, it may
apply cleanly or with minor changes to a Centos 5 install.

I don't think getting so defensive is constructive, but I'd imagine
your contribution is very much appreciated by the Unattended project.

If you get time to update the appliance to Centos 5, that'd be further
appreciated. If not, that's fine too.

Re: [Unattended] unattended virtual appliance

2007-11-30 Thread kerravon
I've been messing with computers for over 20 years, I'm not hung up on
versions of operating systems as some people are.

I have every version of redhat since they started, including fedora 8. At
the end of the day does it matter what version I chose to use

To start off with, I don't remember ever seeing in the unattended docs
anything about using specific versions of an os.

I see from the posts a lot of you use windows platforms I could say why when
linux is more flexible but I don't.

FYI I used fedora 8 originally and ran in to a few complications,so I chose
to use the platform for the actual server I have

Working at my place of work. If you don't like my choice then sorry, that's
your problem not mine, I am trying to give something

Back to the community not any specific individual. As all community VM's
this appliance will be open to contributorsd to add and remove

Options, platforms,scripts whatever they want.

No, Sorry didn't explain much did I, Its just a straight forward normal
installation of unattended on fedora core 4.
I noticed a lot of mails over the few months newbies having problems setting
it up, So ithought I'd put it together in a virtual machine, so they could
download and play around with a working system befor e installing onto a
real machine. Or infact use it as it is.
I thought it would also be useful as a test appliance when editing scripts
adding new features before releasing them.

Thanks for the suggestions though I will look into them.

Regards
Kerravon

Hi,

you could distribute it using one-click-file-hosters like
www.badongo.com, www.rapidshare.com <http://www.rapidshare.com> etc. Also a
convenient method:
www.pando.com

I think, Unattended WIKI is a good place to provide some information
about your appliance, download links etc.

Is your appliance based on Mario's unattended-gui approach?

Gerhard
