This issue is still present in official 8.10.
Problem in /usr/bin/gnochm, in function repl_entities(text):
subs = entitydefs[match.group(str)].decode(
'latin-1').encode('utf-8')
Perhaps it needs default encoding setting that user may set in
preferences?

I finally managed to compile 2.02.
It turns out that Kile needs the kdelibs4-dev pakcage
so you need to
sudo apt-get install kdelibs4-dev
The older KDE libraries which I installed were not sufficient, and conused the
./configure script.
Installing the newer version will remove these
The important part is the test install rather than just the test build. I
was able to do test builds just fine.
