I have setup multiseat configuration using following blogpost:

Confirmed the lack of functionality, when file is copied locally it
plays just fine, over nfs share vlc does not play and intermittently

I've the same problem. The problem is that hddtemp always spins-up the
harddrive when reading the temparerature from drive - although this is
not (always?) necessary. For my harddrive I can use smartctl to read
the harddrives temperature without spinning-up the drive.

As xserver-xorg already recommends udev, this issue should be fixed now.
