I have the same/similar problem. Possibly related to

The symptom is that gnome-do is running but it's running at 200% CPU and
lookups do not work, e.g. if I type firefox it stays in raw text mode
and does not launch firefox.

I cannot repeat the issue you reported. I downloaded 4 DVD of lucid
without any problem at 32-bit system with U9.10. But I have one
explanation for your trouble. These DVD images are snapshosts and are
changed often.I guess your lucid-dvd-amd64.iso changed at server before
you finished download.
Closing this (very old) bug since it looks like it was decided to leave
the packaging as is.

Yes, the libnss-ldapd package should depend on nslcd. An alternative to
nslcd is running a slapd with an nssov module but I don't know in which
package that module is (that package should problably provide nslcd),

Did you include a .cfg extension in the filename in the clientlauch.d
directory? It needs to have one, because the Debian version needs a
filter one filenames so that it doesn't read .dpkg-old and friends.
