I'm guessing that doing that jump caused the whole thing. Obviously it
would be good to try doing the upgrades properly 8.04->8.10->9.04.
Alternatively you could try upgrading a machine from 8.04 to 10.04
(alpha) and see if it breaks there.
As a very basic test, have you upgraded the machine to 9

This was fixed for me, unfortunately if you use a separate boot
partition you will need to update the system after installing to be able
to boot to the other systems. If this is still an issue for you, please
reopen.
