I'm guessing that doing that jump caused the whole thing. Obviously it would be good to try doing the upgrades properly 8.04->8.10->9.04. Alternatively you could try upgrading a machine from 8.04 to 10.04 (alpha) and see if it breaks there. As a very basic test, have you upgraded the machine to 9
