As far as I know, Banshee handles UTF-8 perfectly fine, at least where
Japanese and Chinese characters are concerned. Perhaps your filesystem
isn't supporting them properly? What filesystem are you using? And if a
userspace application is able to create files that are not deletable or
renamable,
Banshee already recommends gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad which already
contains an MP3 decoder. In addition, I think Ubuntu's auto-codec-
install dialog also points towards plugins-bad for mp3 playback.

Given that turning off all gconf settings didn't help, do you have any
other ideas?
Well, you could check what's going on in `banshee --debug`. Also, you could try
disabling the podcasts extension and see if that helps.
