Follow up: I did some additional testing. Suspend to disk and suspend to ram are working fine with the *radeon* driver. Only the *radeonhd* video driver is playing havoc with suspend. I also run pm-suspend from the text console while X11 was running with a radeonhd driver. My system came up just
