were these:

It seems that the problem has disappeared after installing the recent compiz
updates. At least for me.
I haven't experienced any freezes today, which I probably would if the bug
still existed.

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: compiz
Since the update of the radeon driver where XXA was replaced by EXA, I get
frequent (several freezes per hour) freezes when compiz is activated and I do
something that requires some sort of animation (i.e. open the menu or
minimizing a window).

I remember having this problem a while ago. I don't remember how I fixed it but
it wasn't just aMSN but the whole desktop. I'm now running 9.04 on the same
computer (I think.. ) and it works as expected, so whatever makes the menus
disappear it's probably fixed when you switch to 9.04.

It seems that it has something to do with compiz and visual effects. I
have a second computer that also runs ubuntu jaunty and amsn. The main
difference is that the second computer has fglrx instead of radeon and
doesn't have visual effects activated. I saw that the icon seems fine on
that

I can't test it again since I don't have two monitors connected anymore.
I've seen others who runs it successfully tough, but with a different
setup.
The working setup:
Ubuntu 8.10
fglrx 2:8.543-0ubuntu4
TV connected to TV out and configured in ATI's GUI
vlc 0.9.4-1ubuntu3
The non-working setup:
