There's a new prerelease of stable nvidia driver, v 180.53, that fix
problems with smp processor, which should be what we are experiencing.
Btw, 185 series drivers are way faster to me..

Sorry for the delay. I'm back to my jaunty pc, and after a huge update
(a couple of weeks) system looks stable and pretty fast. I'm not able to
reproduce the bug, still I'm not sure what was causing it. As long as I
remember there was nothing about the freeze in Xorg.0.log, I'll post it

Edit: I forgot to mention I'm on newest 185.19 nvidia drivers from
http://ppa.launchpad.net/thefirstm/ppa/ubuntu. I found this looking at
my repos, I must have changed it last time I used my pc. If you need it
I'll try to go back to 180.44 and reproduce the freeze. It's definitely

Still no luck, bug is back.
It looks like the patched compiz works just for the redrawing issue, but it
does not prevent system to become unstable and randomly freeze.
Today it happened 4 times while trying to make my backup using BackInTime on a
remote nfs share, as I usually do. After

Bug is back after latest updates (gnome 2.26)
It looks like screen is not refreshed, while system continues to run.
Nothing wrong in Xorg logs, nor in dmesg or /var/log/messages.
Problem still exists with every version of 18*.* nvidia driver (even with
185.13 beta).
xorg.conf is the default one
Ok, it looks like it's compiz related. Everything works great with
desktop effects turned off.

This was fixed (or it looks like it is) by setting compiz configuration to
default and using the predefined configurations in ubuntu.
Maybe going from 0.7.8 to 0.7.9 made some plugin doing that mess.
I'm still not sure about which plugin was the cause of the problem, I'll
investigate further.
I think this can be driver related: 8200 / 8300 chipsets still have
performance and stability problems as some say on nvnews forum.

Drivers are nvidia 180.29, gpu is 8200 integrated on mobo (asus m3n78). Compiz
is 0.7.9+git20090211, which is latest I can see on repos.
I tried different memory configurations (assigning from 32 to 128 Mb to gpu),
and different compiz settings (from normal to advanced to custom effects set
