Actually the problem is that texmaker is unable to deal with
some character encodings, being the WINDOWS-1252 the one
that gives me an error in this case.
After converting the file to utf-8, with:
iconv -f WINDOWS-1252 -t utf-8 file.tex

Update: Texmaker CAN deal with different encodings, which can be set in
Options - Configure Texmaker - Editor
It just can't recognize the encoding automatically, and the file needs to
be reopened after changing the encoding.
Therefore, this is not a bug.
