i discovered if you run from command line
vlc /dev/video0 vlc version 1.0.2 will open the v4l device and display the
video and you can hear the sound
sco...@scott2-desktop:~$ vlc /dev/video0
VLC media player 1.0.2 Goldeneye
[0x8d66f28] main interface error: no interface module matched
This issue is fixed in debian version 1.0.2-1 (see linked debian bug
report).
This debian release is merely a bug fix release.
