The obvious solution seems to be to have Ubuntu's basic
lsb-base-logging.sh check whether splashy is there, just as it already
checks whether usplash is there, and act accordingly.

Depends how complex it is. There's no fundamental reason it couldn't
just all go into lsb-base-logging.sh if suitably conditionalised, but if
the code is too bulky or the interface is too unstable it might be worth

For what it's worth, GRUB deliberately has no filesystem writing code,
in order to avoid this class of problem. It sounds more likely that the
problem resides elsewhere, although I can't say I know where.
I don't boot my Windows installation very often, but I also don't
automatically mount it and
Lacking appropriate hardware myself, I'm afraid I'm going to need log
files before I can do anything about this. The necessary logs are
/var/log/installer/syslog and /var/log/installer/partman if you manage
to complete an installation somehow, or /var/log/syslog and
/var/log/partman in the
(By the way, if you're retesting this, please use a current daily build.
I don't think much has changed since the 20th, but older builds
definitely had some known problems with dmraid which I'd prefer not to
spend time rediscovering.)

Error 22 is an error from GRUB Legacy, not GRUB 2. It sounds as though
you still accidentally have GRUB Legacy installed somewhere, and
furthermore that you have a GRUB 2 installation that wasn't correctly
updated on upgrade to 9.10. I'd recommend running 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure
grub-pc' to

Hmm, my last message was a trifle terse ...
The problem here is that we never found time to integrate the
grub-install implementation Agostino wrote, that would update the
wubildr image rather than the MBR. We'll need to do this to fix this
bug. I'm not yet sure whether it should be done directly

It's not necessarily trivial, although somebody used to Gentoo should be
able to manage. The scripts in /etc/grub.d/ are used to generate the
menu, so it's possible to edit them and run update-grub to regenerate
it.

This is a casualty of making the defaults work out properly for Karmic.
If I can figure out a nice way to automatically detect things on

Have you tried reporting this to either Microsoft or your virus scanner

interest in avoiding false positives, since it tends to make people turn

Did you perhaps upgrade from an early version of grub2? This is probably
caused by an incorrect /etc/default/grub file. The current default looks
like this:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash
... but if instead you had:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=quiet splash
... then you'd find those options
This last line is badly garbled:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=splash #GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true quiet
The stock file in the package says:
#GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true
You should replace your last line with the stock one to fix this bug.

Right, let me try to be crystal clear.
You *do not* need to install GRUB to the MBR to avoid this bug. You *do*
need to install a newer version of GRUB to wherever you originally put
GRUB.
This bug occurs when people have an old GRUB image *somewhere* that
they're using to boot, but never update

Looks fine, thanks. The only change I made was that debian/changelog
must read LP: #400049, not LP: 400049 - the # is mandatory or the
