Turns out that installing the latest release of 6.5b1 fixed my problem.

Hi, folks. The Linux doofus is back to report that after applying the
latest update to 6.5b1, I can't connect to localhost:9000. This time,
apt-get install libio-socket-ssl-perl didn't do anything. When I ran
sudo -u slimserver /usr/sbin/slimserver, I got the following:

Many thanks for the link, DDday376, special thanks to infodroid. What
did the trick for me was the apt-get install libio-socket-ssl-perl. Now
everything works as it should the world is a better place.
