I can't replicate your original issue.
I booted from the internal Squeezeplay OS, set the network to 'wired',
then shutdown. Then I removed the ethernet cable, booted from my
JiveLite USB stick, and the wifi interface was up and running without
intervention.

Lots of post ont'interweb detailing how to do it and I could not get any
