[SlimDevices: Unix] Alpine Linux on Dell M300
I first saw the Dell / Kace M300 appliance 'mentioned in this thread' (https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?110979-LMS-Bad-(-)-Install-on-armel-debian) and thought it was a 'cool little device at a great price on ebay ($15 shipped!).' (https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Dell-Kace-M300-Asset-Management-Appliance-Small-Business-Networks-SFF-F2CYK/232383957636?epid=1084021933=item361b29ca84:g:srgAAOSw3h1ZTTQp) They are older armel based SBC's inside, circa 2011 but they do have 1Gbps ethernet and a SATA port inside. Alpine doesn't have an armel port but they do have the scripts and framework built into their aports system for porting Alpine to different architectures, so I've been messing around with that on and off for th4 last couple of months. I now have a working base load and enough extra packages built that I was able to run squeezelite on it last night. Next up is LMS. I already have Perl built, it only took about 4 hours to compile natively on the M300. (!) Picked up an Apple USB-C DAC dongle for $8 on Amazon ('because of this write-up and comments, and the price' (https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/review-apple-vs-google-usb-c-headphone-adapters.5541/)) and used that for the squeezelite testing, connected with a USB-C to USB-A adapter. Working and sounds pretty good though I can hear occasional pops and clicks which has me a little concerned. I don't hear them when using the dongle in my laptop. You can fit a 2.5" drive straight into the onboard sata connector but I elected to buy an extension cable and configured a two m.2 ssd software raid 1. It's been fun and a little bit challenging. I'll let you know when I've got LMS up and running. +---+ |Filename: m300.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=29549| +---+ sodface's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=19057 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=111730 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Do you have any idea how to turn off the screen? I suppose it is a feature of Jivelite but I cannot find it. I guess it can be done by toggling one of the gpio pins - but which one? I cannot find a schematic for the Pirate Audio board. Hi I'm new with Linux and Alsa. When I use a PI3b and Picore and I use an amplifier all works (with a little bit noise in the distance but that's normal). So this is all working fine. When I use the PI with the HifiBerry DAC+ (with RCA) I hear nothing. On the monitor of the PI I see: Waiting for soundcard sndrpihifiberry tp populate  ..failed to find sndrpihifiberry (42). Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BETA: piCorePlayer6.0.0 - PI4 support
I just attempted an insitu update in my main server from 6.0.0-b1 to rc1. To my surprise it seems to have worked fairly well - features that weren't in b1 are now present (e.g. the Jivelite frambuffer settings), and the footer shows that I'm on rc1. I know that somewhere between b1 and rc1 the web interface underwent a refresh, and strangely this doesn't seem to have worked properly with my insitu update - it seems to have a slightly corrupted (wider) version of the older interface: [image: http://www.cjh.me.uk/MyPhotobucket/cache/DIYHifi/rc1_640.jpg] [image: http://www.cjh.me.uk/MyPhotobucket/cache/DIYHifi/rc1_2_640.jpg] Is this a simple fix, or should I just bite the bullet and re-install from a fresh rc1 image? chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110727 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

The sound quality is much debated and criticised, but might be OK to you, depending on music type and setup. And sound quality is best at about 90-97% of the max volume of the pi. And if you can control the soundbar for volume, it will give you quite a reasonable sound at reduced volumes. To minimise cost, first verify the setup to your soundbar and its converter. Output from your receiver , a pi and a mobile phone should all be reasonably enough for the set. Perhaps you linked your pi though the receiver , and the receiver is reducing the output ? Eliminate it in your tests. And verify the volume of your pi output in the software ( lms WEB interface ), and use different audio files, as these can differ quite a lot too. overall bad connections can give a low volume too. Check cables till you know they are OKE. You could do without a DAC. However a dac does not need to be expensive, google pcm5102 on you favourite electronics market, and you should be able to get one below 10 Euro easy. ( a minimalistic one is available from 3 Euro, a ready to plug dac on a HAT about 20 euro's With a dac, sound quality at low levels is noticeably beter than the software dac in the pi. This enables you to reduce volume of the pi, and do not need to grab a remote IR controller for that. [SlimDevices: Unix] PiCorePlayer DAC/amp basics question
Hi all - got a question that arose from a basic setup of PiCorePlayer. My receiver is a basic 5.1 receiver that only has RCA inputs/outputs. My soundbar is a Yamaha one with coax audio and TOSlink inputs. I'm running a basic Analog-Digital Converter from my receiver's output to the soundbar. The soundbar controls the volume. I've configured a Pi 3 with PiCorePlayer. It works fine and outputs audio over the headphone jack. Right now, it's outputting to RCA via a 3.5mm male to RCA male splitter. The volume is really low, even if I pump the soundbar volume to max. For whatever reason, the volume, bass, and treble controls on the receiver don't work - welcome to the wonderful world of thrift store audio. If I get a HiFiBerry DAC+, will I also need an amp to boost the volume coming out of the RCA plugs on the HiFiBerry? If so, what's the lowest possible cost option that will do okay? I'm no audiophile, I just want a Sonos-like setup in my living room. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] ANNOUNCE: piCorePlayer 5.0.0
@MOHN JADDEN So you are going Analogue out from the rpi > 5.1 receiver > ADC > Optical input on the Soundbar. Does the soundbar control the volume ? Why not get a Spdif hat and go Spdif > Soundbar with optical? If you go cheapo then you may find there are no drivers for the board in pCP, so check first. Not to be rude but this is now starting to drift away from the Thread title. :) If you wish to continue, then why not start a new thread with specific details (names of equipment might help) full set-up details and what you wish to achieve. Location might help (I'm guessing USA ?). That's an interesting observation. Does using plughw increase the cpu sys load instead? I would NOT recommend using plughw: with squeezelite as it masks the true capabilities of the audio hardware and moves any audio conversion to the alsa layer instead of squeezelite. jive_alsa will automatically close and reopen the audio device with plughw: to allow resampled playback of audio streams not directly supported by the audio hardware. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Jivelite on a Joggler
Update to LMS install - I noticed after sometime that the usual method of mounting a NAS share by adding to the fstab file doesn't actually work. If you use mount -a at the command line then the mount works. I can't find any workaround within fstab itself to fix this. After a lot of trial and error, I finally hit on a 'solution' Creat an executable script file with the mount command in it. Use cron to run the script at boot. It works. If you receiver has digital imputs and you don't use DSD files then you can find a spdif hat for the pi, or a hat with analogue outputs, plenty to choose from. I would recommend a reputable name and not a cheapo from you know where :) ronnie I once watched the great man on a Thanksgiving day game, ripp a Turducken apart with his hands !!:) Man in a van's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=43627 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110642 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix
