I have fixed this myself. I think that I broke mySQL by messing about with a HUMAX 9200 control program.
I fixed the problem (i think) by reinstalling mysql (I used sudo apt-get install mysql-server which installed mysql 5.) I then purged slimserver using adept manager and reinstalled. I use kubuntu edgy.
