Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Xubuntu 14.04 & startup sequence of LMS

2021-09-13 Thread zordaz

A final post ons this subject for reference purposes: since LMS version
8.2.0 a systemd service file for logitechmediaserver was introduced
which solves this issue in an elegant way. The /etc/rc.local workaound
is not needed anymore.

My own attempts to create such a file where useless, so many thanks to
the people who developed there service files for this LMS version!

Fiddling with links in /etc/rc?.d doesn't work, already tried that long
ago. I will look into LSB tags and systemd unit files when I have some
spare time for it, but that route feels like a manual workaround.

I still think this should be solved within the default config and
packaging of LMS. I will of course post my findings here.

Add LSB tags to the init.d script, or fix the links in /etc/rc?.d so it
comes up last, or write a systemd unit file for it that explicitly says
"requires: network".

The problem also was there when Upstart was the standard in Ubuntu. On
my former system (Debian with classic sysvinit) it worked OK.
LMS and Xubuntu are running with default configs here, so this seems
more like a bug or missing feature than a config error.
Do you have a suggestion were to look in more detail?

Yeah I know that, Spotty is running fine here since the very beginning.

The correct solution is to tell systemd that LMS requires network. It
will then start it after it starts the network successfully.

Yes, this is an old one but...

Today I decided to test if it was possible to remove the Q
/etc/rc.local workaround command, because I am running Ubuntu 16.04 now
with systemd and LMS 7.9.x
The test was unsuccessful, the /etc/rc.local workaround is still needed
when running LMS on a system where the network is started later than
LMS.
I have not tweaked with the systemd-config or whatsoever, it is running
with default Ubuntu settings.

I can't believe I am still the only one over here having this problem. I
am still interested in a structural solution or nicer workaround!

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Xubuntu 14.04 startup sequence of LMS

2015-05-12 Thread zordaz

After a few months of experience with the solution above, I have to
resurrect this post :p

In the end the boot sequence tweak only solved part of the problem:
Internet Radio indeed worked fine this way, but Triode's Spotify plugin
didn't. After a regular reboot or startup of the system Logitech Media
Server still needed a manual restart before Spotify worked.
So I'm back to the /etc/rc.local workaround.

The issue must have something to do with the combination of:
- Startup sequence of several services / processes of the system: the
network by default is started AFTER Logitech Media Server.
- The startup scrips of Logitech Media Server.
- Upstart compatibility (in the future: Systemd).
- Network Manager

Question: Is there a more elegant solution possible than /etc/rc.local?

In the end I still think a more fundamental change in the startup
scripts of Logitech Media Server is needed for Debian/Ubuntu based
systems.

Tnx. Fiddling around with the Boot Up Manager did the trick; I changed
the start / stop priority of LMS to 98.
It seems to work, although the network itself is managed by Upstart and
cannot be configured via this tool.
