This sounds like a good starting approach - not that I can really weigh
in on the framework implementation - but the end result of having
attributes on the channel elements should do the job. That then also
opens up a means for specifying channels to render borderless,
highlighted, alternate,
The framework implementation shouldn't be too difficult. Would the
ability to add attributes be useful in both the structure and theme
transform be useful or is it only interesting in the theme transform?

Ah I got it. That does sound like an interesting feature though I'm not
sure it matches what Gary is looking for in the way of channel/portlet
meta-data attribution. We'll have to keep that in mind once JSR-286 is
available since it is going to provide a few more phases in the
rendering cycle
Strike that last email. I realized this information is used for ICC.
Though I can't find code where the channel-ids node which ICC uses is
ever updated when subscribing to a new channel so I'm not sure ICC will
work until after a log out/in.
