Re: Was I hallucinating? Totally OT, perhaps relevant

I would need to look, but I recall Apple making a big deal about Siri doing
the wake up completely on device and not transmitting anything unless
actually doing a query. This was around the time the 6 or 6S came out with
the always listening option. (Of course I do occasionally wake her up
unintentionally...)

I once thought so, but then I reviewed the audio clips in my account and
apparently not. Or maybe they're just under contract with Five Eyes. :)

Re: The coming of SVG

2017-11-08 Thread Richard Gaskin via use-livecode

My $0.02 on the three leading candidates:

"picture" -- gets my vote for this proposed object because we have
decades of precedent well established with Apple's picture ('PICT')
format, distinguished by the same thing that defines this new object: a
type of image that can be comprised of vector or raster elements, or any
mix of the two.

"canvas" -- *might* be a better choice *IF* LC's implementation can
support at least a substantial subset of HTML's well-known canvas
object. Otherwise it just becomes confusing, with unmeetable expectations.

"viewer" -- too general for an image object; everything on screen can be
"viewed"; a window is already as much a "viewer" as anything else.

Besides, the xTalk world already has a precedent for a Viewer object,
one that's every bit as general as such a broad term implies:

Gain Momentum's Viewer objects allowed its scripter using that Unix and
Windows toolkit to view any stack inside a rectangle within any other stack.

Though I doubt it's currently a front-burner project for the team, at
various times Mark Waddingham has expressed interest in it,
understandably given the vast range of powerful options it would open up
for us to add that Gain feature in LiveCode.

Yes, it's in the RQCC:

I was just reading an article, this morning, about the trainwreck of new
gestures to accommodate the X's lack of a home button, and I guess what the
author was saying is pretty much what I'm trying to say: If it isn't
obvious and easy, then it's wrong. Keep the language on the level of what
a grade schooler would grasp and not forget. If that means we chop down
several objects into the graphic object, and just add a "type" property,
then so be it. Most of these other proposals don't keep it simple.

IOS simulator/ iPhone X and Xcode Mobile Pref Order

2017-11-08 Thread Ralph DiMola via use-livecode
iOS developers FYI:

If you have more than one Xcode on the Mobile Prefs make sure that the last
one in the most recent. I had Xcode 9 as the first and then added the older
ones. When the simulator fired up from LC there was no option for iPhone X.
I then closed down everything and started the simulator from Xcode 9 and the
iPhone X was there. I then started up LC and it froze when "Configuring
Simulator". This required a force quit to get out of. After I re-arranged
the Prefs so that Xcode 9 was last on the list I restarted LC, Clicked the
test button, iPhone iOS 11 started up with an older phone model. I selected
the iPhone X(now an option), shutdown the older simulator device, clicked
the test button again and the iPhone X was up and running my app.

Please let us know what you find.

There's quite a controversy going on about how much of one's personal
conversations the Facebook app listens to.

But there's no question that all voice-activated systems (Apple's Siri,
Amazon's Alexa, Microsoft's Corana, Google's voice navigation) must
listen at all times in order to be able to know when you call them by
name.

It wouldn't be possible for them to do what they do without an always-on
mic connected to the Internet.

At least Google (hopefully all of them) provides a place in account
settings to hear the last several clips it sent to their server to try
to determine if you were actually activating the voice service or just
talking to someone in the room.

Once I listened to those clips, I was momentarily relieved to find
nothing there of any particular interest, just me talking to my wife
about shopping, with a friend in line at a movie, with my father-in-law
over breakfast.

But right afterward I turned it off. Never regretted it. I only really
used it in my car, and I'd driven for decades without it so I figure I
can do a couple more decades without it as well.

Whether any of that always-on-mic-connected-live-to-the-Internet should
be active or not while the screen is "locked" is something I can't say
with confidence. Even if designed to be a certain way, like webcams
there's no guarantee it can't be abused.

I have 1 Mac, 1 PC with 4 VMs and 5 mobile devices minimum at my desk. One of

Having followed this discussion from digest purgatory while on a conference
trip, my vote is for “Viewer” as well.

Viewer has these advantages:
 - not already a token in either LCS or LCB (that I know of)
 - is descriptive of what it does
 - is a nice parallel to player, a container for various time-based media.

Viewport is a possibility, but it seems to already have a fairly precise
technical definition in the computer graphics world.

Canvas is okay, but evokes painting not vector graphics.

My $.02.

Actually, I like the name "viewer" too, but if we could use
the word "viewer" then "viewport" is more descriptive:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viewport

By the way, this new control is a LC9 only widget. Right?

Re: The coming of SVG

2017-11-08 Thread Martin Koob via use-livecode
I was thinking that to view movies or videos we user a *player* object not a
movie or video object. So what about calling it a *viewer* object which
would then allow us to view SVGs, images, graphics or any other drawing or
illustration format. This way the name is not tied to the data type being
viewed. The internals of the viewer object would take care of displaying
the assigned object whether using SVG to display SVG paths or image data
etc.

Folks,
Autocorrect foiled me again! I meant to say:

I wonder if any of you have had this happen to you?

With hackers able to listen in on locked phones, I wonder.

Best,
Bill

I wonder if any of journalists had this happen to you.

Admittedly, I was laying sick in bed at the time. I clearly and distinctly
heard my iPhone or iPad say “Alibaba”. Could this be either 1) an alien from
outer space, 2) some nefarious plot by that Chinese version of Amazon, 3)or
worse?

Weird question, I know but this is how suspicious hacks get uncovered
sometimes. My phone cover was closed an the os was locked. It’s an iPhone 8.

Best,
Bill
