Re: OT: Completely OT: Reading list recommendations.

2020-02-08 Thread Iphonelagi via use-livecode
Hi Richard

I would add CODE COMPLETE by steve McConnell as well but rapid development from
memory is a shorter read.

Update I decided to look on amazon rather than my library and I was right 674
pages instead of over 950 .. so shorter is relative and I find it’s not on
kindle.

You can find it easily on the usual sites (I won’t link to it to spare
blushes). I always like to have a pdf of any book I have in print ... much
easier when going on holiday.

Many’s the time I purchase a dead trees version from amazon and if it’s not
prime I purchase the kindle edition as well to read while it arrives.

Android native field focus problem

2019-10-26 Thread Iphonelagi via use-livecode

Hi all

Routines rewritten using native field.
Works great on IOS but Android
Doesn’t focus on first field to bring up keyboard on initial pageload. The user
has to press the field.

How do we set focus to the field?

Re: Bug from 2014 - still causing problems

2019-10-25 Thread Iphonelagi via use-livecode
hi Jacque

Yes, In the end Todd bit the bullet and did it with the native field on both
iOS and Android ... now for the testing and inevitable quirks.

this lesson gave initial food for thought

http://lessons.livecode.com/m/4069/l/29112-how-do-i-use-native-text-controls-on-mobile

But a newbie learning LC will look at it as broken, and the idea is to make
the learning curve easier. The other thing Is others will get bitten in the
bum when you leat expect it. We tested both on IOS and android but never used
delete on adroid for over a year ... I suppose cos you don’t expect that to
fail.

Still there is no excuse for not fixing something for 5 years that doesn’t
even need a recipe.

The bug which Klaus commented on will frustrate even more people when they try
to get their buttons looking how they want and finding the settings don’t work
as they should.

Re: ...and Livecode... where are we now?

2019-10-03 Thread Iphonelagi via use-livecode
Hi Trevor

I understand totally but when something was promised after crowdfunding to be
ready in 3 months and three and a half years later NOTHING that is unforgivable
... If one person at Livecode spent 1 hour a day only without weekends over 3
and a half years that’s roughly 21 weeks at 5 days a week 8 hour days ... and
that’s a lazy programmers week.

I want them to succeed I don’t want them to take mark and monty and Ali off
this project but getting even an a couple of hours a week would have done
something

And answering Bob the best company I ever dealt with for support was Foxpro
before microdot bought them ... had a showstopper big while I was onsite in
Manchester sent a fax to America got a patch for the bug 1 hour later which I
downloaded from their bbs at 2400 baud ... now that’s support.
Mark waddingham Monty and Panos on this uselist are close but they aren’t in
charge of lighting the Cigar

I assume you’re taking the piss (jokingly I hope)

But it’s certainly fining it’s way into the market

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.computerworld.com/article/2867542/microsoft-touts-7-per-user-monthly-pricing-for-windows-subscriptions.amp.html

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/02/16/moviepass-slashes-prices-to-7-point-95month-so-how-does-it-make-money.html

The .9x on the end doesn’t remove the psychological aspect. Basically 7 ish is
where people can be flipped from buying or not buying something that isn’t
really needed and also the sweet spot where you can have a subscription on
credit/debit card for a year or more on something you are not using and just
put off cancelling because in the scheme of things it isn’t a mortgage.

As an example of NOT following this rule there is a direct debit going out of
my account for extended warranty for a VISTA Laptop I had probably in 2006 or 7
that either says I have more money than sense, but I assure you it’s not the
former which makes it a contradiction, a paradox or an oxymoron - answers on a
postcard please. I phoned up once to cancel and I ended up telling the twat on
the end of the phone where to stick his head.

P.s

The great Tesla said that the keys to the universe were the numbers 3,6 and 9
but fiat currency never plays nice with reality.

http://blog.world-mysteries.com/science/why-did-tesla-say-that-369-was-the-key-to-the-universe/

On a personal note if there is something that I want and it’s easier (or
faster) to get at £7 instead of 5 my time is worth more than saving £2 on
anything especially a one off - but that’s me

Hi Richmond,

Well I couldn’t agree more if that is the case, but that was 2 minutes of
googling but the general suggestion of contacting “good” Sanskrit related
organisations of watch you no doubt know a good few still has merit. And you
never know who or what might turn up.

Anyway hope all goes well with the campaign

I looked at the list a green tick means it’s ok a red cross means it isn’t, the
crosses I saw were usually server links and a Mac dang or 2

I didn’t try because the ones that had crosses were mostly business server ...
coincidence I think not
