Re: License Activation

2021-04-12 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Kaspersky confirmed to me that they had updated their virus definitions to
correct this, so an update to Kaspersky followed by a reinstall of LiveCode
should fix it. Annoying, but hey ho.

Re: Find Replace in Script Editor with cr

2021-04-12 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
OK. The general sentiment seems to be against banning. However, if I see any
more inflammatory posts from participants in this thread, I will action bans.

Once again, the list demonstrates what a kind and forgiving place it is.

I'm going to post the list rules again later today, when I have a moment, as I
don't think I've done that for quite some time, maybe we need a refresher.

Re: Find Replace in Script Editor with cr

2021-04-09 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Oh my word. That went downhill really fast, while I was peacefully sleeping.

Folks. Never, ever, post politics on this mailing list. Do NOT exchange abuse.
This is a place to discuss LiveCode, in a helpful and friendly fashion. If
someone offends you, the best response is silence. If you must, please email me
to ask for redress.

I really truly do not want to ban anyone, all the posters in this thread have
provided interesting and useful information in the past. However, if I do not
see apologies from Sean and John Balgenorth as their next posts I will ban you
both. I'm not looking for justifications, explanations, or any continuation of
this thread. Two simple apologies and move on. For the avoidance of doubt, you
are not apologising to each other. You are apologising to the list for posts
that have offended quite a large number of people.

Thank you.

Heather

I'll check and resend. Please confirm if/when you get them. Offlist of course.

Yikes.

I took my eye off the list for just a few hours...

Folks, please, no. None of this here. We are here to discuss something we have
in common, viz, LiveCode. I like to think that focussing on something we have
in common helps to heal divides and reduce extreme views on all sides, but
whether it does or not it is never appropriate to air these kinds of views on
this list.

My best regards to all and not another peep out of any of you on this topic.

Some sad news

2020-12-04 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Dear List Folks,

I have today received some sad news. I am told that Hermann Hoch passed away in
April this year, from a stroke. I know many of you knew him either remotely or
having met him in person at a conference. He will be missed. I met him myself
and found him to be a wonderfully warm and kind person. He could be volatile,
but I always felt it was because he cared passionately about things.

I will take what steps I can to preserve his legacy of HTML5 examples. As these
are hosted on an on-rev account we should be able to maintain it in perpetuity
for the benefit of the LiveCode Community.

LiveCode HTML5 didn't always meet his expectations or progress as fast as he
wanted it to and I do wish he could have seen our next planned release, where
HTML5 support will be a focus. He was of great benefit to this community and
shared his expertise freely.

Scroll down the list of downloads, below the fold. You will find all the test
releases including 9.6.0 rc2. We forced rc1 to the top because the current
stable release, 9.5.1, is not signed for Catalina and was causing problems for
new users.

Our first Community Zoom Session

2020-04-02 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Dear list folks,

I have now scheduled our first zoom meeting, open to anyone who wishes to
discuss LiveCode, share hints and tips and see a friendly face during this
period of isolation for many. I will be there in a moderation capacity, to
facilitate discussion. Panos will be joining me to help out. The actual debate,
discussion, conversation and topics is down to you guys and gals! Come along
and bring a topic you'd like to share/learn information on. Just to reiterate,
the usual list rules apply: we're talking LiveCode, we're not talking religion
or politics, and cheese should be kept to a minimum :)

To give us an idea of numbers and how to best manage the meeting, I have turned
on registration for this meeting, so you can click on the link below to
register. It would be helpful if you can do this in advance. The meeting will
be tomorrow, Friday 3rd April, at 4pm UK time, (we've just switched to Summer
Time here). To see what time that is for you, please go here:

https://www.timeanddate.com/

or just click the registration link and you will be able to specify a timezone
to see what time it will be for you.

The invitation:

You are invited to a Zoom meeting.

When: Apr 3, 2020 04:00 PM London

Register in advance for this meeting:

https://zoom.us/meeting/register/v50kdeGuqjstQaRWOduQAUs31lqtQJOVdA

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information
about joining the meeting.

Warm Regards, and see you tomorrow!

Idea to keep us all connected

2020-03-25 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Dear List Folks,

These are strange and difficult times. Thanks to COVID-19 we at LiveCode Ltd.
are all now working from home, and staying together as a company via Zoom and
Slack. It's working pretty well for us I must say, at least so far. Turns out
programmers don't much mind being locked in a room alone with just a computer
and a takeaway pizza for company...

I'm sure many of you are in the same boat, quarantined or semi-quarantined and
trying to keep going without the usual levels of face to face support and
company. We've been talking about how we can all support each other during this
time, and stick together as a community.

We want to do our bit. To this end, we are planning to setup a monthly zoom
room for everyone on the list to access. You can speak to each other, find out
how everyone is doing, share your projects, tell your story. We will join these
rooms when we can. This will very much be an extension of the use-list, with
the same ground rules - we're here to talk about using LiveCode, and help each
other out with that. Obviously there will be some water cooler type chit chat
but please... no politics, religion or cheese! Let's keep it positive. It will
be community run, we will participate as and when we can but primarily this is
for you all to talk to each other. We'll work out the mechanics of it as we go
along, but it looks like zoom has the facility to split off smaller groups so
it does not become too unmanageable and everyone has a chance to participate.

On top of this we want to do more - we want to use what we have to help. We are
fully aware that people across the world are having to stay home, some are
fortunate enough to be able to keep their jobs or businesses and some have not
been so fortunate. We want to give people the opportunity to learn a new skill.
Taking a leaf from Andre's book (thanks Andre, and pun intended...), while this
crisis is ongoing we are going to make the first year of LiveCode Indy
available to brand new users from free to full price. This will be on a sliding
scale - people can pay whatever they want or can afford. No judgement. We hope
you can help us spread the word, if you know anyone who is in a tough
situation, or just someone who has always wanted to code - please pass this on
to them. We also ask you (although we know you will) to welcome new people to
the community with open arms and help them through this new journey. We would
love to hear any ideas you have on how we as a community can help more people
through coding. We are putting the campaign together now, we expect to be ready
to launch it in a few days time.

All we ask at this time is that existing customers do not cancel their
subscriptions to then go ahead and purchase a new license on the sliding scale.
It's worth noting that although the first year will be at a price determined by
the user - the second year will be at full price. If any of you are struggling
at this time and are concerned about your subscription payments please do get
in touch with me on the usual supp...@livecode.com email and we will try to
support you in the best way we can.

Thanks for reading this rather long post. Take care, stay home, stay well and
enjoy this excellent opportunity to really get to grips with LiveCode in your
solitude!

Warm Regards,

Heather

LiveCodeShare brief planned outage

Dear List Folks,

LiveCodeShare is about to be offline for an hour or so while it makes it final
move to our new server, having been repaired and updated to run on the 64bit

it should resolve an observed problem with uploading large files it has
suffered from for a month or two.

Thank you for your patience, and don't worry, LiveCodeShare will be back with

Re: my message not showing up in "use-livecode"

2019-11-01 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
This sounds like it might be due to the breaking change in standalone building
described in the release notes for 9.0:

https://downloads.livecode.com/livecode/9_0_0/LiveCodeNotes-9_0_0.pdf

I quote:

The standalone builder has always needed to close the stacks it builds for
reasons pretty deeply ingrained in the code. However this causes a few
problems, for example:

values in script locals become empty
behaviors are broken when the parent script is on / in a stack which closes

As an attempt to improve this situation, the code that locks messages when
closing and opening stacks for standalone builds has been removed. This means
that where previously mainstacks would not receive openStack and closeStack
messages during standalone build, they now do. If this causes problems for your
stack, you can exit from the handler if standalone building is in progress:

on closeStack
if the mode of stack "revStandaloneProgress" > 0
then exit closeStack
end if
end closeStack

I hope this helps,

Heather

Re: Give a bug a hug

2019-10-11 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
For what its worth, I think this is the way to go. A totally community run
initiative, with a bounty on bug fixes. Someone or several someones outside of
the LiveCode team would need to take responsibility for setting up a structure.
We'd love to see bugs being fixed, by members of the community. It's kind of
the reason behind Open Source. There are plenty of bugs that would be suitable,
which don't require deep dives into the engine. Pull requests arrive in the
usual manner and get approved or fed back on in the normal scheme of things by
our team. If this could be encouraged by a bounty on fixes, funded by the
community, run by the community and entirely outside of LiveCode Ltd.'s scope,
what's not to like? Our overstretched resources would be augmented by a
community team, and the dual nature of the licensing would bear fruit in a new
and productive manner. I like it.

Over to you.

Dear Sean,

If you look back through that thread you will see that we did more than
apologise. We expressed regret, and we also showed willing to jump in and fix
the issue as soon as was humanly possible. Which is all anyone can do when
something goes wrong. We do not as yet have the ability to time travel in order
to prevent the issue having arisen.

It is time to move on from this thread.

Re: Where LiveCode is Now

:) and there it is. I am happy and relieved to be able to forgive and move on.

We all want the same thing here: for LiveCode to be hugely successful. Our
official BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal, this is real actual terminology
believe it or not) as stated in our company articles is and has been for some
years to see LiveCode as number 1 on the Tiobe index. Our means for getting
there may differ, but we can at least all agree on the goal.

Onwards and upwards.

Where LiveCode is Now

2019-10-03 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Dear List Folks,

I'd like to reassure you, the team is anything but idle, and the fruits of
their labours are coming your way. I don't wish to steal Pano's thunder, but
you should look for an announcement on 9.0.5 tomorrow (all being well with the
build, which is currently undergoing final checks. Probably I've just jinxed it
by mentioning a release date, in direct contravention of my rules.) 9.0.5 has
had a fix shoehorned into it for the nasty debugger crashing that was reported
not long ago.

9.5.1 is well under way and shouldn't be long now, bringing the needed updates
for iOS among other things. I'm not going to even hint at a release date of
next week for this, its certain to cause a #fail.

9.6 is in progress with some nice new features and a first dp is not far off.
Real Soon Now :).

Yes, it has taken a little longer than usual between releases. A major reason
for this was the server move, which impacted our build bots and delayed all
test builds. Frustrating, but necessary work, and thankfully that is all done
now and everything is working smoothly again. One does not appreciate the full
complexity of these build bots until one attempts to move them intact from one
place to another.

The suggestion that all our efforts will remain with LCFM Native and never bear
fruit for LiveCode itself is based on a misconception, an idea that somehow we
are working on something other than LiveCode. We're not. Everything we are
building for LCFM Native is built with LiveCode. We cannot do it without
improving LiveCode. Those improvements will come back to the community (many
already have). Hermann... its not an infinite effort. FileMaker is very much a
finite set of code, with relatively slow changes.

I hope you will like 9.0.5, 9.5.1 and 9.6, we're looking forward to bringing
them to you.

Best Regards,

Heather

Re: Maintenance forever?

2019-08-30 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Rick...I don't think you quite comprehended the issue. The raid disk failed on
the new server we were transferring 500GB of data to, during transfer.
Suboptimal. Reverse engines! Start again, lets have a new disk there please...

Anyway, that is all done now, and pretty much everything is back up and
running. There will be a few remaining tweaks.

I can confirm that LiveCodeShare is working again. If anyone does not see it,
please flush DNS, restart your router, restart computer, restart LiveCode and
try it again...

LiveCodeShare was particularly difficult as it was first created many years ago
using an old version of Revolution CGI which is not 64bit compatible.

Heather

quality.livecode.com is not up and running on the new server. It is still
working on the old server. Whether you can see it or not depends on which
server your dns is pointing at.

We are aware of the issue with the QC, and are working on upgrading it so it
can move.

Re: Using community to update text of a project distributed with Indy license?

2019-06-18 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Dear Curt,

Thanks for asking. This would be prohibited by this clause in your EULA:

"f) Any Created Software built with this Licensed Edition is fully functional
and allows users full access to the entire LiveCode feature set. Where the
Created Software is a standalone executable, the end user of the Created
Software cannot edit scripts or build their own standalones without purchasing
or owning a Licensed Edition. You may not attempt to get around any of these
limitations or encourage users of your Created Software to attempt to do so."

Essentially, our licensing does not allow you to act as a standalone building
service for a Community user, for fairly obvious reasons.

Also, if your end user opens your stacks in Community, edits them, and shares
them with you, he is then obliged to also share your source code with the
world. Which I'm guessing you would not want.

So, if he wants to edit your closed source stacks, he's going to need a license
of his own. I'll be happy to discuss this further with you if you email
supp...@livecode.com , but I thought it might be
helpful to clarify this licensing point on the list :)

Heather

Trying to track down the reason for slow downloads

2018-07-20 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Dear List Folks,

There appears to be a strange glitch with slow downloads from
downloads.livecode.com , which only affects a
select handful of people. We are trying to track this down - it may be simply a
random internet glitch that we can do nothing about, but we are suspicious. It
seems to affect the same people, over a long period of time, which is not
consistent with a random glitch.

We need more data. If you have been affected by slow downloads of LiveCode more
than once, over a period of time separated by weeks or months, please email
supp...@livecode.com with the following
information:

Your IP address
Your browser including version number
Your OS including version number
Your location (state, country)
Your ISP
When you tried (roughly), what you were downloading and how often you have been
affected

Please, don't send this information to the list :). Direct to
supp...@livecode.com .

Thanks so much for your assistance!

Re: Mobile Native Essentials Widget Pack

2018-04-12 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Alex: that installation error suggests you are trying to install in too early a
version of LiveCode. The widget pack requires 9.0 dp 11 or later.

I'll investigate the store "update" issue, sounds like a glitch.

Re: Livecode.com server down

2018-02-15 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Did you check your account to see if it was available? The server was not down
last night for more than about 60 seconds (as I well know, being awake for
large portions of it). The message you saw sounds like the standard could not
contact server message, meaning you need an offline license file. It doesn't
mean the server is down. If you were installing a version older than 6.0 you
will always get this message and always require an offline file. For info on
how to do it:

Re: this session has lapsed?

2018-02-06 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Stephen, I'm confused. Maybe you are too? If you have a subscription to
LiveCode, it remains current for the term of the subscription. If the
subscription is cancelled your access to the purchased, commercial,
Indy/Business LiveCode product will cease. This has been the case since version
6.0 was released, together with the free open source Community Edition.

If you purchased an edition prior to the release of 6.0, this will not apply to
that edition, the older licenses were permanent and not dependent on a
subscription. All licenses later than 6.0 will phone home from time to time to
check validity.

If at any point in our conversations in support I have confused you on this
point, I apologise. I've read through the correspondence I have found and I do
see a number of occasions when I have at least attempted to explain this. I
appreciate that our licensing can be confusing at times.

Heather

Re: Activation problem

2018-01-17 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
We are currently having some server issues affecting login. We are working to
fix this asap. In the meantime, to launch LiveCode disconnect from the
internet, then launch. LiveCode will switch to offline working and it will no
longer be affected by the issue. You can reconnect to the internet once you
have it running.

We will let everyone know when the issue is resolved.

Re: Object layers

2018-01-10 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Hello Christer.

This list is a community. It is friendly, helpful, and there is a certain
amount of chat. When that chat becomes excessive, I do ask members to curtail
it, however nothing in this thread in any way contravenes the spirit of this
list. You were offered some helpful advice. Another list member asked for
assistance in reading the emails and received it. I continue to be amazed and
thankful for the warm spirit of helpfulness and friendliness in this community,
freely given.

This list runs on mailman. Its pretty old software, but many people here prefer
it to moving to the forums and reading mail there. As long as mailman continues
to function, I imagine the list will continue to be here. It has limitations.
Threading doesn't always work well (depending on email client). We are not

to your email may become attached to different threads if the subject is

As always, politics, religion and cheese remain off limits. Please avoid

Re: Call for Speakers 2018

2017-10-26 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Thank you Roger. We've had so much great feedback about this method of
delivering content. It's not the same as a fully live conference, no, but in
some ways it works better. They are different things. We're not saying we'll
never do another one live. We're just saying hey, this was great. Let's do it
again!

So folks, come on, be a part of it, and start sending me speaker ideas and
submissions. Don't want to speak yourself but know of someone else with a
fabulous project or viewpoint to share? Dob them in and tell me all about it.

Dear List Folks,

It may or may not yet have come to your attention that due to the great success
and popularity of LiveCode Global, we are running it again next year. So I'm
once again sending out the call for speakers. Got something interesting to
share with the community? Could you fill 7 minutes, 30 minutes or 50 minutes
with some LiveCode Goodness? We'll be starting again on January 18th, and then
every second month, on 15th March, 17th May, 19th July, 20th September and 15th
November. Are you free for an hour on any of those days?

If you'd like to speak, please contact me on conference-spea...@livecode.com

description of your proposed talk.

Um. Like every other platform for LiveCode, there is an open source Community

pledge to go through.

Good? Bad? Seemed like the right thing to do.

Hm... lol. Well Ben stayed with us for a good 8 years, and moved on to spread
his wings a couple of years ago. As Mark said, he still works for us part time.
You might even have met him at LiveCode events since he moved on.

Staff changes happen! Not perhaps all that often at LiveCode, people by and
large seem to like it here and stay, but there is a (moderately) regular
turnover. It's not exactly news.

Re: Funny pricing policy

2017-05-26 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Dear Hermann (and Richmond),

I've responded to your email to support, I trust we can resolve all this
amicably and become friends again.

I have now added a note to the survey page to say that if you purchased a
conference ticket already, and want your free tshirt, just email us. We should
of course have thought of doing this at the time, but hindsight is 20/20.

Richmond... the image you have painted in my mind of the entire team doing
their presentations topless is going to take a while to erase from my mind...

Folks, sorry for any confusion. The free t-shirt is a reward for taking the
survey. We thought it would be a nice little extra surprise. However if you
took the survey and already purchased a t-shirt with your LiveCode Global
ticket, just let us know and we'll give you a coupon to the value. Or an extra
t-shirt, free :). Note that the coupon for your free t is time limited, it
expires on 30th May.

Re: Script Profiler

2017-03-09 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
I made some enquiries from the team on this, and I'm told:

You can only profile a stack, not an individual handler. It profiles the top
stack when you start the profiler, so you just have to make sure the stack with
the resizeStack handler is the top stack, then start the profiler.

I hope this helps!

Re: HTML5 and different editions

2017-01-23 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Guys, there seems to be quite a bit of confusion here! Let me try and clear it
up.

LiveCode Community is free, open source, and lets you deploy to all platforms
including HTML5. As we are all aware, you must share your source code for
anything you make publicly available.

LiveCode Indy offers two licensing options. You can license for Desktop/Mobile
deployment and/or you can license for HTML5 deployment. These are separate
purchases. You can add HTML5 to your Desktop/Mobile Indy for an additional cost.

LiveCode Business, exactly as for LiveCode Indy, offers two licensing
deployment options, Desktop/Mobile or HTML5. HTML5 is an addon for
Desktop/Mobile, at additional cost.

LiveCode Indy and LiveCode Community are separate installations, with different
capabilities. To allow Indy to build "Community" standalones would involve some
way of stripping out Indy features, removing passwords or encryption, ensuring
no closed source addons were included... in short, its not a question of
changing a button in the Standalone Builder. If you want to build open source
licensed, free, Community edition standalones, then you need to use Community.

I hope this helps...

Heather

Re: Changes to use-livecode list.

2017-01-06 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Well. That's the problem you see. DMARC rejects mail on the basis that it does
not come from the same address as the sender ie the posting person's email is
not the list address. Reversing this change will reinstate that issue. There is
no good solution here, which is why I'm wondering if the list is reaching end
of life. Either a proportion of list users get persistently bounced, creating
bounce problems for other list users in the process, or we live with this style
of from address. And as yet, I do not know if this has really solved the
problem, we'll need to wait a few weeks and see.

Re: TS Net for Indy vs Business

2017-01-06 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
"A bit like devs are being milked" seems a somewhat extraordinary statement.
LiveCode is a business, with expenses and a stable of highly skilled and
valuable developers. Which of them would you like us to fire? We need to pay
for LiveCode's development so that all of the users in the community can
continue to use it, receive new features and develop their apps. If you want
features for free, LiveCode Community is Open Source. Here is the link to
github:

https://github.com/livecode/

We welcome all the coding assistance you can give us. The reality is that the
overwhelming majority of the work is still done by our in-house team, and the
majority of the work we do goes into all editions including open source.

The new tsNet features are great. They do not take anything away from
Community, which still has liburl as it always did. They were costly to develop
and license and will now require maintenance from our team. Some are in Indy
and some are in Business, where we can receive the appropriate level of
remuneration for them, allowing us to retain our extremely valuable team and
bring you the best LiveCode we can.

Warm Regards and Happy New Year!

Re: OK, the list *really* needs to be fixed

2017-01-05 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Folks, I have been monitoring the lists and its bounces for a few weeks. The
problem does appear to be the notorious DMARC issue, which our list software
does not deal well with. I have made a change to the way it handles DMARC mail
which may or may not help with the problem. You can and I'm sure will let me
know.

It is possible that the only real solution here is to stop using Mailman. This
could be quite disruptive to all, but is something we will take under
consideration. To be fair, this list has been running on this software for...
18 years? Its not surprising if it ultimately reaches end of life as the world
moves on.

Regards, and a Happy New Year to you all!
