Re: How do you find beta testers?

2017-04-13 Thread Marian Petrides, MD via use-livecode
When I wrote an app to teach Transfusion Medicine, I selected 10 friends and
colleagues--5 of them content experts in the field with no particular computer
expertise and 5 of them friends I knew from Apple User Groups from way back in
the days when all Apple ][ users were "hobbyists." The latter were tasked with
beating up on the software, trying to break it. All of them got a free copy of
the software.

This worked quite well. In all the years the software was sold, I never got a
single bug report, although I have gotten content feedback through the same
publisher.

I am pleased to announce my new book, LiveCode Lite: Computer
 Programming Made Ridiculously Simple.

  It is temporarily available as a free PDF download at
 www.medmaster.net/livecode.html along with a LiveCode scripting tutorial for
 Mac or Windows.

  The original HyperCard language had only about 150 words, while
 LiveCode, which is far more powerful, has close to 2000. This can be
 intimidating to newcomers. The book, 165 pgs, is designed for individuals
 with little or no background in LiveCode or computer programming, providing a
 brief, clear, hopefully enjoyable approach to LiveCode and computer
 programming in a simple, linear step-by-step fashion. The book follows the
 format of other Medmaster titles. I hope to receive feedback so that the
 book can be improved, and I thank all the LiveCode gurus on the forum, which
 I have followed for years.

Re: [OT] And You Thought Richmond Kept Old Macs Alive

2015-03-26 Thread Marian Petrides MD
Gotcha all beat. I still have my Apple ][+ (purchased 4/4/1980) and it still
works—did a power supply transplant 20 years ago. Plus three Apple ][ GSs—two
work, one is parts for the others.

And, of course, my 512K Enhanced Mac (Fat Mac), which also works. And a bunch
of newer Macs, LC 2, gumdrop iMacs, fruit colored iBooks. All of them work.
It’s a regular Mac museum in the making up there in my loft. Too bad I don’t
have space to display all my goodies.

Re: [ANN] Coding Nine LiveCode Games eBook

 Hi,

 coding and playing games on what were then called home computers. I wanted

 that
 it would take a very long time to do. Instead, today a more modest Coding

 LiveCode Games eBook is finished and available. You can find out more about
 it
 at the link.

 http://livecodegamedeveloper.com/book.html

 It has 9 games:

 * Pong
 * Tetris
 * Dr. Eliza
 * 23 Matches
 * Tower Jump
 * Lunar Lander
 * Text Adventure
 * 3D Spider Hunt
 * 3D Isometric Maze

 I hope this book proves the clarity and power of LiveCode where code is
 shorter,
 and so quicker to develop, than other languages. With
 most games coded in under 500 lines of LiveCode, this book demonstrates good
 technique. To stimulate ideas for further development, and inspire both new

Re: revOnline and Open Source

2013-08-01 Thread Marian Petrides MD
Heather,
I'm a late comer to this discussion so I might have missed a crucial piece.

However, I can conceive of situation in which I might freely share something
I've written, e. g. a lecture, but include a copyright notice to forestall
someone else using my work verbatim (or nearly so) and passing it off as their
own. In fact, I've always included a copyright notice in any handout I've
passed out at any lecture I've given. I'd be delighted if people would share my
work--as written and with proper attribution. OTOH, I would be seriously
annoyed to find large chunks of my work in someone else's textbook.

It seems to me that this is analogous to the situation you and earlier posters
have described. Does this make sense?

 I've nothing against people protecting their code if they want to. It's
 theirs. But if they upload it, openly, to a shared site… what do they expect
 people to do with it?

 I'm open to being educated. Maybe there is some reason someone would do this.
 I just … don't get it. Certainly, that was the original rationale behind
 providing the revOnline site. To allow users to share their code and their

 Well, I started the thread, and the reaction was both amazing, and, I
 believe, healthy; surely the more people
 are involved in this sort of discussion the more chance there is of having
 some sort of consensus.

 If RunRev are presenting themselves as 'open', at least as far as their Open

 this sort of discussion is necessary; and the thing that is really good is
 that Kevin Miller has become involved.

 Certainly, at the risk of sounding mind-bogglingly naive, I had always
 assumed that stuff available on revOnline
 was there for the taking; and when I uploaded stuff to the older version

 I didn't bother about any licensing documents on the understanding that
 anybody who wanted could just help themselves to my code and get on with it.

 I have also been rather careful about the bits of code that are mission
 critical to my commercial product.

 Obviously things are not nearly so simple as I fondly imagined.

 What precipitated my starting this thread was my spotting, on revOnline, a
 color picker stack that
 DOES contain an explicit copyright statement.

 Hi Folks,

 I was browsing reddit when I found this little eBook about SQL aimed at new
 users.

 http://www.dreamincode.net/forums/blog/48/entry-4251-my-free-ebook-a-primer-on-sql/

 It's 42 pages long and it appears to be a good and solid intro to standard
 SQL.

 Thought some people here would be interested in such book.

 Cheers

Wonder if they can do facial recognition on canine faces? Those are the only
photos I ever post. :-))

 They know far more about you than you can imagine:

 FB collects more data about you than you know, it's shared more widely than
 you know, legal protections are spotty, and malicious behavior related to FB
 is on the rise:

 Your current location and activity, among other things, can be picked up and

 Until recently they did even worse until a lawsuit stopped some of it. Their
 approach seems to be that they will infringe without telling you until they
 are forced to stop.

That was true until Lion. Now Rosetta is not even an option--unless someone has
found a trick I'm unaware of.

I think you have 30 days from the date of purchase to start watching and 24
hours from the time you start to finish the movie.

 If I recall correctly, when you rent a movie you have 24 hours to watch it

 think it can sit there for a while (not sure how long) waiting for you to
 kick start the timer. . Not sure anymore though as my first gen (of the new
 gen of apple tv's) rolled craps after 5 months.
