AW: OT: update RDS SSL/TSL certificates at aws

2019-12-09 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Thank you Matthias for your experience.

I didn't tested yet, but I hope I won't run into an SSL verification error. And
actually I think in my case the SSL change on the db server won't affect my LC
programs at all, because there is PHP in between, which connects to the db.

Thanks
Tiemo

Tiemo,

i have no experiences with AWS. But what i can say is, that when changing an
SSL certificate on a server there should no changes be required in the
frontend application created with LC. At least here i did not encounter any
problems when i switched from unsecure to secure connections or when a server
certificate was renewed / replaced.

What i´ve encountered in one case was that i´ve received an SSL verification
error. I think it was tsnet/curl error 48.

As a workaround i used tsNetVerifySSLPeer false to disable verification.

Matthias

OT: update RDS SSL/TSL certificates at aws

2019-12-03 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello,

this is a little bit off topic, but I hope I find here some experts and
hints to this issue.

I have some LC programs which communicate via https to PHP programs on a
webserver. Those PHP programs communicate with a RDS database on a aws
server.

Now I got a mail from aws, that they are going to exchange their SSL/TSL
certificates on the server and I have to take action to avoid interruption
of my applications. As far as I have understood, I have to do two steps. 1.
I have to renew the certificate from my RDS database at aws via the aws
console. Ok that seems to be some clicks at the aws console and that's it.

But 2. aws says, I should test my applications in an staging environment, if
everything works fine with the new certificates. And here comes my question.
I have no idea, what to test and what to look for, much less, where in my
PHP or even in my LC programs anything reflects to SSL certificates and
where I could change anything (and if yes what), if the test would fail.

Perhaps I am thinking to complex and all this isn't related to my apps at
all, but it scares me, because of the aws announcement "to avoid any broken
apps"

Has anybody experience with this issue in relation to LC and PHP?

Thanks for any hints how to handle this issue

Tiemo

AW: Indy 9.5.0. Apple can't search for malware in LC Indy?

2019-11-07 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
The weird thing was, that this message was different as others related to
not signed apps, telling it couldn't search for malware in the LC app...
That puzzled me.

In the security settings I had the setting "appStore & trusted developers"
(or so), but that was not enough. I had to add LC Indy to the white list
"open anyway". The clue was, that I had to open first the security system
settings – then start LC – and only then Apple asks me in the open system
settings window, if I want to add this app to the “open anyway” list.
Otherwise it won’t show you any window or choice to answer this option.

Have a look at LAVFilters. It's a free package with several codecs/filters.
There are a lot of download sites (watch out for realiable) and the original
at github.
I am using it for mp4 h.264 videos on windows, very reliable without any
issues yet.

I have found that the range of media formats DirectShow supports (out of the

Windows) to be staggeringly limited!

I love LiveCode, but cross-platform media playing is awful compared to say
around the time of LC7 or 6

So, I am seeking any recommendations of free to distribute and use codecs
for DirectShow/LiveCode 9xx under WIndows that expands the formats
DirectShow can handle.

Mothership (i.e. LiveCode, Ltd.) you should watch this thread and if there
are any, author and feature them in a prominent help article on your web

if I would start from the scratch today, it probably would be worth a try,

Tiemo,

My advice is probably of no use but...

Could it be the solution is updating the codecs?

What you described reminded me very much of "MX Player" updates (a popular
video player for Android). Every time after an update, some videos open up
with no sound and a "This Audio Format AC3 Is Not Supported" error message.
Updating the codecs is always the
(irksome!) solution; licensing issues, I think?

Anyway, my 3 yen's worth... which is what's hanging around in my wallet
now... and getting rid of 1-yen coins is only a little less of a pain than
Googling for the latest codecs.

who has experience with mp4 videos on windows?

2019-03-18 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello,

I still have trouble playing mp4-h.264 videos on some windows machines since
some time. I have installed the LAV-filters, which work fine for h.264 on
windows. Where my program can play my videos on most windows machines
without any problems, there are some single computers, where the video
screen just stays black and nothing happens. (tested with/without
buffering).

This occurred with LC 8. Building a standalone with LC 9.0 my same program
could play the videos immediately. And now again, my same program without
any changes, build with LC 9.0.2 doesn't plays the videos on some machines
again anymore.

This is very annoying for some of my customers, when they accept my
automatic update and the programs doesn't plays the videos anymore after the
update.(Playing videos is the essential task of my program)

I discussed this already with Panos in Sep. 2018 and his guess where two new
header includes in w32-ds-player.cpp(d3d9.h and vmr9.h)in LC 9 what have
made it work in LC 9. But now in LC 9.0.2 the videos are broken again on
some computers and I guess the headers are still included. This is very hard
to track down, because either Panos nor me can't reproduce this issue.

Is there anybody, who also works with mp4-h.264 videos on windows?

Any experiences? Any ideas what to check for?

Thanks for any ideas

Hi friends,

this came up in the german LC forum:
If you right-click an image file (Jpg) on the desktop you will get a list of
applications that can handle a Jpg image.

This list is provided by the "Windows Explorer" (I think, I'm a Mac guy).

Now if your LC exe happens to be in that list and we select our app, what
message, if at all, does our EXE receive when the "Explorer" "sends"
that image to our application whivh MAY be open already.

I mean how can we get to know what image file the user wants to open with
our EXE, so we can load it into an image object in our EXE?

Know what I mean?
Thanks for any hint!

Attaching Engine - running forever

2019-03-05 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello,

building only a windows standalone on Win10 with LC 9.0.1/9.0.2 the
standalone builder runs forever at "Attaching engine".

This happens only with one of my stacks. With LC 8.1.10 the standalone
builder runs fine with the same stack.

1. Is there anything I can check for?

2. The build of the exe seems to be fine (it runs). Is there anything,
what is to be build after the externals folder, resources folder and the
exe, or do you think I can just kill LC in this endless loop of "Attaching
engine" and my standalone will be fine anyway?

Thanks

AW: AW: weird video screenshot problem

2019-02-06 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hi Mark,

I can reproduce it in the LC 9 IDE with the pure stack (no standalone) on my
computer with the same LC 9 version. So neither "Enable Hi-DPI Scaling" or a
relation between windows and an App setting can be taken into account.

But I have made some more tests. The stack, where the screenshot gets
pixeled is from 2017 (probably created with LC 8). The stack, with the nice
screenshot is from 2009 (probably originally created with LC 2 or 4). Now I
have put a "fresh" player object and a fresh image object (from my LC 9.0.2
pallette) onto this old stack and voila, the same corrupted screenshot
appears.

Do you see any relation to this? Could it be, that an old player object from
LC 2 or 4 has a hidden option, which handles video data different, even if
it is now used in an LC 9 environment?

Thanks
Tiemo

The only setting I can think of 'Enable Hi-DPI Scaling' in the standalone
settings on the Windows platform tab.

Failing that - have you tried running the two apps in a fresh/new/clean user
account on your machine? (This is to discount that windows has, for some
reason, set some piece of unknown state on a per-app-per-user basis which is
causing the problem).

Warmest Regards,

Mark.

weird video screenshot problem

2019-02-05 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello,

I am experiencing a very weird problem, taking a screenshot from a video on
Windows. Perhaps anybody has an idea where to look for?

I have two programs, where I am playing the same mp4 videos. The user can
make screenshots from the paused video and store them as JPGs/PNGs. If the
user has the windows display settings text size at 100%, everything works
fine in both programs. When setting the windows display text size to 125% or
above, the quality of the screenshot in one of the both programs gets almost
unusable. The image is corrupted by many bad pixels (red, black and lost
pixels). The other program still shows a fine screenshot.

My first idea was, that there must be a difference in the build of the
standalones, so I tested the two stacks in the same LC 9.0.2 (and down to LC
8) IDE with the same result. I compared the two stacks and didn't found a
relevant difference in displaying the video and taking the screenshot. Both
codes are almost the same here. The relevant code looks like:

set the alwaysBuffer of player "VideoPlayer" to false

start player "VideoPlayer"

stop player "VideoPlayer"

export snapshot from rect (globalLoc(topLeft of player "VideoPlayer") ,
globalLoc(bottomRight of player "VideoPlayer")) to gScreenshot as PNG

put gScreenshot into img "ScreenshotImg"

Here you can download an example of the two screenshots in a pdf:
http://www.kestner.de/material/screenshot-test.pdf

Has anybody ever seen such a phenomenon? Any idea what could cause this
issue in combination with the text size of > 100%? And for what difference I
could look for in my two programs what could cause this issue in one of
them?

Thanks for any ideas

Tiemo

AW: failing snapshot when system textsize > 100%

2019-01-31 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Solved!
When you change the system text size on windows, you have to restart the
machine. Without restart the windows are already resized, but some programs
like LC don't get the new system parameter to work with. E.g. the
systemPixelScale only gets updated after a restart. After a restart the
globalLoc() also gets the correct rect - good to know.
Thanks for listening

Hello,

working with LC 9.0.2 on windows 10

I take snapshots of parts of my stack, which works fine as long as the
system display setting is set to 100% text size.

When you set the system text size to > 100% the export snapshot function
grabs wrong rectangles (which are located topleft to the wanted rect).

I tried to use globalLoc(), without success, it still grabs a wrong (but
other as in case 1) rect topleft of the target rect. I tried to add the
stack location coords to the target rect, but that's too much.

I know there must be any parameter to get the system text scale, but I
didn't found it yet (it's really hard, if you have no idea, how the property
could be named). Perhaps I can scale my rect by this system text scale
factor? Or does anybody knows any other property or function I could use to
shift my export snapshot rect to the correct target?

Thanks for any ideas

AW: Script Editor Performance

2019-01-29 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
I am still trying to find reproducible recipes. Sometimes it really is a mess
to work with the IDE, sometimes (same stack, same script) it is acceptable (not
nice, not performant, but acceptable). I have switched off all "fancy features".

Beside of massive slowdowns, the 9er IDE has (at least on Win 10) some nasty
behaviors. E.g. When using the scroll-bar, the line numbers don't get updated
anymore. You have to stop scrolling and click somewhere within the script to
update the line numbers.

From time to time when working with the script and switching back to the main
stack window, the window is disappeared, it even doesn't show up anymore in the
window menu, though the window still is "anywhere". After some more clicking,
the main window appears again - very strange!

In total very dissatisfying
Still trying to find recipes, Tiemo

Did you try subdomain without www?
Put https://mySubdomain.myDomain.de/myPHP.php
<https://www.mysubdomain.mydomain.de/myPHP.php> into tRes

www is also a subdomain.

.de is the top level domain
.mydomain is the second level domain

while any other name before the second level domain is a subdomain.
e.g.
downloads.livecode.com <http://downloads.livecode.com/> www.livecode.com
<http://www.livecode.com/> forums.livecode.com <http://forums.livecode.com/>

Of course you could use also www. as an additional prefix of a subdomain, but
this does not make sense to me. In most case the server removes that www. part
then.

So please try again without www.

Matthias

AW: change http to https, what to do?

2019-01-24 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
What I found is that it seems to be related using a subdomain and SSL in my
url.
mySubdomain points to dir myDir at myDomain and myDomain has a certificate
with "*", so that it also reflects on the subdomain.
This works (SSL):
Put https://www.myDomain.de/myDir/myPHP.php into tRes
This also works (subdomain, but no SSL):
Put http://www.mySubdomain.myDomain.de/myPHP.php into tRes
But this does not work (Subdomain + SSL):
Put https://www.mySubdomain.myDomain.de/myPHP.php into tRes
Calling this subdomain URL via browser, I can call it with https

Will test Matthias try later, thanks

I want to change the http communication (put URL) to https (the server has a

AW: Script Editor Slow on Windows

I think the Windows defender menu and options change, depending on what AV you
have installed. I have Kaspersky installed and by this the defender doesen't
have this option.

I tested to put LC to the trusted list of programs of Kaspersky, but as it is,
right now, I don't see the lag either with or without that option.

I have to make more tests tomorrow

Or better just exclude Livecode...exe from Realtime Protection / Realtime Scan
to keep the system safe.

AW: Script Editor Slow on Windows

2019-01-16 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello,

any new insights?
I am working on a fast windows 10 machine with LC 9.0.2.
No message box open, no project browser open, almost all new fancy editor
options off, no plugins.
Though very laggy input. Sometimes I write a whole line and the characters
appear, when I am in the next line. That’s not really usable.
Has anybody found any tweaks, to speed up the editor again?
Is the windows defender an issue or only a guess? I have installed Kaspersky
and I once have read, that any third party AV tool shuts off the defender,
because it replaces it. But I don't know, if this is the case for all
defender functions.
A workaround would perhaps be, doing the edit in a LC 8 version and only
when it comes to building the standalone or using any new features,
switching to LC 9. But really?
Any new insights welcome
Tiemo

As something to test. I've noticed that the script editor problems worsen
when either the project browser or message box have been opened, the longer
these are open the more the script editor ... in all of LC 9 series gets.

If I do not have the project browser open or use the message box then the
degradation in speed does not in my case materialize so quickly.

I have seen the same slowdown effect on a 64b Intel i5 4440 @ 3.10GHz with
8GB and a newish I7 620 2.66GHz 64b laptop with 16GB ram installed.

I have no plugins activated, in fact, I tried with the plugins folder
emptied.

It would appear that ide messages are hanging somewhere along line?

How to update the project browser?

2018-11-28 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello,

sometimes the project browser doesn't gets updated automatically. E.g. when
ungrouping a group via msg box, the group stays visible in the project
browser until I close and reopen the PB.

Is there something like a "F5" to let the PB update, or is closing and
reopening the common way to handle it?

Thanks

AW: What happened to the LC 9 UI font?

2018-08-24 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
It is not stack related.

I just start LC 9 and get the IDE menu with the strange font - without having
opened any stack.
Parallel opening LC 8, the LC 8 menu is having the correct standard font.

Creating a stack with LC 9, it inherits it's strange font to the answer dialogs
of the standalone.

Hi all,

I would expect this to be on Mac, as in LC 9 we fixed a related bug (
https://quality.livecode.com/show_bug.cgi?id=21261).

I have not seen anything related on Windows. If you have a recipe and a stack
please do file a report so as we can fix this issue in a future release.

Best regards,

What happened to the LC 9 UI font?

2018-08-24 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello,

Windows 10.

The standard UI font has changed from LC 8 to LC 9. It looks a little bit
like "bold", compared to LC 8, but it isn't bold, because e.g. when choosing
a IDE menu, the menu text is even "bolder". All texts in the IDE and in all
LC messages (IDE and standalone) like in the answer dialog are affected.
This way, the texts look a little bit blurry - not nice. I would like to get
the normal font back again.

Is this a bug / feature / option I can change anywhere?

See example screenshot here: www.kestner.de/material/LCUI.png

Thanks

AW: LiveCode - Andoid SDK - Java compatibility chart?

2018-06-19 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Agree!

before thinking of a big solution like an "integrated setup" it would
already help a lot to have a complete, detailed and regularly checked and
updated step by step road map like LC has started it with:
https://livecode.com/resources/guides/mobile/android/
This 'how to' guide only had to be updated regularly (with version
recommendations or a compatibility table) and enhanced with notes to pit
falls, etc., independently of who (Android, Java, LC) is responsible for any
issue.
I followed this guide and the provided links, but it took much too long for
me after a bunch of annoying experiences, not to take the current versions
(what is the natural reflex), but any (which?) old versions. And this is
only the very first step on the road to getting an android app into the
market, where you are heading enough technical issues, not to talk about the
oddities of app signing, etc.
This is not user friendly and will scare newbees definitely away (and even
scares me, thinking of how many pitfalls I have to investigate until a
published app).

Good thing my monitors are anchored to my desk!

It would be great to have ONE single page describing a reliable recipe for
setting up a system for Android builds in v9. I suppose we'd need one for
macOS, Win, and Linux. It would need to be tech-edited for completeness, to
make sure steps very familiar to the author are not glossed over for
newcomers.

Y'all know how much I like LC, and how long I've been using it. But
somewhere in the v9 cycle I lost the ability to generate builds for Android,
and piecing a recipe together from various parts of lessons and posts on
this list has thus far failed to fix that for me.

If I'm having such difficulty, it seems safe to imagine a hundred others
have the same, and many aren't as hooked as I am so they just uninstall LC
and move on to anything with a more integrated build experience.

LiveCode - Andoid SDK - Java compatibility chart?

2018-06-15 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello, Just wasted again one day with these nasty compatibility issues. I
have followed the LC guide
(https://livecode.com/resources/guides/mobile/android/) to install Android
development requirements and failed, because the current versions of Android
SDK and Java (10) are not compatible (at least the the JDK path doesn't
shows up in the LC preferences.)

I didn't found any compatibility chart, though I googled quite some time. I
have seen compatibility charts for LiveCode - MacOS - Xcode once (from Panos
I think), but though I know, that this chart exists somewhere in the deep of
the net, I didn't found it either.

After reading some other threads about these compatibility sh., without any
solution for my current problem, I just deinstalled the JAVA sdk and
installed an older one (8). Now it works. The solution and action to be
taken is pretty easy - if you know it.

Perhaps a compatibility chart included in that guideline (see above) would
help others to get nuts. Or can't I just use google and the LC guidelines?

Thanks

Tiemo

how to use the scale geometry property of an object?

2018-06-12 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hi,

I have a full-window image and need dozens of clickable transparent polygons
on top of it, shaping details of the image. My idea was, that all these
polygons could be resized and positioned automatically by the scaling
property of the object, when resizing the stack.

I have never used the geometry propertry section of an object to scale it
and I don't see actually how it works.

My idea was, that when activated, the object would scale automatically, if I
resize the stack, but nothing happens with the object. Obviously it's not
that easy, as I thought, or I am missing something vital.

I also tested to resize each object in the resizeStack handler by script by
the resized proportions of the stack, but this gives very inaccurate results
because of rounding the small factors of all the small resize steps, while
resizing a stack by dragging the window.

Any hint, on how to use the scale property of an object?

Thanks

Tiemo

Hi,

I don't know what sort of images you have but take a look at xara (
xara.com/designer-pro/features)

Scroll down to the intelligent scaling video - better yet they have a trial.

I think the intelligent scaling might even give you the "safe Zone" that SB
mentioned

AW: Best practise approach for artwork for iOS and Android?

2018-06-12 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hi Jacque,

I thought the dpi only reflects at print, because any screen has it's fixed
pixels. I think an image 800x600 with 144 dpi looks identical on any screen,
as an image 800x600 with 72 dpi because in both cases 800x600 screen pixels
are being used and there is nothing between the pixels. Or don't I see
anything here?

But perhaps I really hould try to start the project with the old 800x600
images, as you and also Kee Nethery pointed out. In this case I am not sure
what would give the better quality in point-of-view resolution. Importing
the original old 800x600 images into LiveCode and let the LiveCode engine
stretch (not distore) the images to a full screen size (with white space on
some edges at some disply sizes), or would photoshop make a better job in
interpolating pixels, if I would enlarge all images in photoshop to lets say
2732x2014 (or even 3200x2400) and let the LiveCode engine shrink the images
to fit each screen.

I would bulk-convert all the images to a higher resolution, perhaps 144dpi.
On Mac, Graphic Converter can batch process these in seconds, and I am sure
there are other programs that do the same on both Mac and Windows. Use these
higher-resolution images in your project.

On mobile, use fullScreenMode "showAll", which will automatically adjust the
display to fit any resolution and screen size on both iOS and Android.
Depending on the original card size, some edges will either be cropped or
empty space will be added. There are ways around this, mainly by displaying
an image at a larger size than the (original) card size.

There was a bug in the showAll fullscreenmode when navigating cards, but
that has just been fixed and will be in the next 9.0 release. There are also
workarounds for this right now if you don't want to wait.

This is a quick process that doesn't take much time because you won't have
to adjust every image.

AW: Best practise approach for artwork for iOS and Android?

2018-06-12 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hi Brahmanathaswami,

this is a very clever approach, I would use, if I would make a new design of
the images. In my case I can't add "sky" or "bottom-grass".

Thanks for the idea

Other replied on resolution. I'll reply as to content. You may not have the
option, but there is a "safe zone" for landscape and portrait.

We recently hire an artist to do a kid's story. She was asked to put "sky" the
top and "grass" and the bottom and significant elements in "safe zone"

Later we are will set the image to "the loc of this card" (centered)

On devices that crop, we lose the top and bottom but significant elements
remain visible.

Is this helpful? Probably not... if it is, I have a "safe zone" stack I can
send you.

Best practise approach for artwork for iOS and Android?

2018-06-11 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hi,

I have three old windows program (going back to the 90th), designed for
children, which are based on "full window" image backgrounds (douzends of
cards, each with another background image) and lots of small detail images.
Up to now I have only developed LiveCode for Windows and MacOS, no
experience yet with iOS and Android development. I try to evaluate the work
load to redevelop those old windows programs for mobile and one general
question before I start is the art work. Since the old art work has a size
about 800x600 by 72dpi, I obviously would need to let redesign all art work
for the todays resolutions, which would be a pretty costly part of the
project and probably the go or nogo for the whole project.

Since there are so many different screen sizes, resolutions and aspect
ratios on iOS and Android, I wonder how to cover all those variants
technically in LiveCode and basically from the art work side. E.g. which
size and ratio I would have to let create the "master" images by the artist
(to be also on the safe side for the next years)?

Since I can't let design for each ratio a different master image for each
card, I probably would have to distort the "master" image to each different
screen size (app only for tablets in landscape mode)? Could I let make the
OS the distortion of one background image per card in LiveCode, or would I
need to import and assign different images (which I have distored in
photoshop before) for each screen size in each card? Additionally I would
need to create douzends of polygons as clickable objects, above each image
for small parts of it, where I am not sure, if they would keep their exact
target area, when the background image will be distort - probably not.

Up to now it looks to me as a never ending story, but perhaps I don't see a
good approach

Any experience or pointers to a how to are very welcome.

Hi.

You cannot ask for the "last" char of a line, because LC will give you the
last "non-control" char.

Say you have the below text in a field:

abc
def

So the last char of line 1 is "c". But the number of chars of that text
snippet is 7

But numToChar(char 4 of fld 1) = 10. That is a return char between the "c"
and the "d"

How to get the line break char?

2018-04-18 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello,

I want to compare two CSV files and I suspect that there is a difference in
the kind of line break. With charToNum(last char of line 1 of field "foo") I
can compare the last visible char of each line, but how can I get and
analyse the line break char that is used?

Thanks

AW: Where does TSNet go on Windows standalone?

2018-04-16 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hi Graham,
that's strange. I am using also InnoSetup and my standalone also uses tsnet.
But in my case the tsnet.dll is located in the Externals folder of the
standalone as all other dlls are and works fine. I have an Externals folder
with all dlls in the source dir for inno and inno keeps it as an Externals
folder in the standalone.

I think I have answered my own question - the ‘Externals’ folder is created by
the LC Standalone Maker, so it’s Inno Setup that’s the problem. The issue is
that the Wizard which I’ve always used to create installers with Inno Setup
lacks an option to specify a folder (in our case ‘Externals' within the program
directory to put DLLs etc in; but it can be done by editing the script
directly. Probably nobody else wants to know the detail, but if the do, just
ask.

Hello,

LC 8.1.7: I have updates for one of my programs (Win & Mac) on my webserver
located. Because it's a shared webserver I wanted to put my updates to AWS
S3, since AWS has a better performance and a web server actually isn't a
file hosting server. Now the update request of all my programs out there at
my customers point to my webserver. I put a rewrite rule into my htaccess to
point the update requests to AWS. That worked instantly great with my
windows program, but my mac program stays at "connecting to server" and
doesn't goes on downloading the update file. Obviously the Mac version of
tsnet doesn't follow a htaccess rewrite rule.

Can anybody confirm this?

Can I differentiate a htaccess rule by the system of the client request, so
that I could at least redirect all windows request to AWS and let the Mac
requests stay on my Webserver as a partial workaround?

Thanks for any ideas

Hi Tiemo,

Unless you are deploying to iOS devices, you should be ok to use the latest
version of tsNet with LC 8.1.4. Each build of tsNet contains iOS binaries
specifically for the version of LC it relates to.

This has been happening for years, it just may be more frequent now. I've
had a handler in my private backscript for probably 10 years that does
"unlock cursor" when I type "uc" in the message box. There's no consistent
recipe. My best guess is that it happens when the cursor is moving so fast
that any messages that track the mouse are either not sent or the mouse is
no longer over the original control when it is received.

IDE Cursor icon often hangs on windows

2018-02-28 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello,

On Windows, since LC 8 the icon of the cursor often "hangs", it just keeps
the icon from the last action and doesn't changes back to the standard
pointer icon when moving around the screen, so that I often have to select
any action with the "resize cursor" - just an example.

It's not essential, but a little bit annoying. Anything I can do? Is it
known? Shall a file a bug report, though it will be hard to make a recepie?

Can't play anymore mp4 videos with 8.1.7

2018-02-27 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello,

I have some windows machines, which doesn't play anymore my mp4 videos with
LC 8.1.7 / 8.1.9

I am using mp4 videos with the standard player object (no quicktime). So
that mp4 videos can be played on windows machines you need a mp4 video
filter. All my customers install the LAV filter (mp4 filter) and that worked
fine with my LC 8.1.4 program.

I updated my program with LC 8.1.7 and my videos still play fine on most
windows machines, also on my machines. Now I get feedback from two
customers, where my videos don't play anymore, the videoscreen just stays
black, no error message, the result is empty. My same program has already
run fine at these two customers with the 8.1.4 version, so the LAV filters
are installed.

I made some tests, but couldn' track the issue down. I gave one of theses
customers three identical version of my program. One build with LC 8.1.4,
one with 8.1.7 one with 8.1.9 without any other changes. Only the 8.1.4
version shows the videos. On the other hand the videos are played fine at
most other customers also with my 8.1.7 version. So it seems, like there has
something been changed in the LC 8.1.7 engine, which doesn't affect all
computers, but some and I have no idea, where to look for.

Does anybody from the mothership knows, what has been changed in the
multimedia API? Any ideas, what I can do or how I could narrow the issue, if
there are no error messages?

Thanks for any ideas

Tiemo

AW: [Somewhat OT] Mac Code Signing - can anyone explain?

2018-01-15 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Sorry my reply was for your first post. For your second post, I am always
unsure myself, cause this is a job you only do once a couple of years.
I *think*, you could delete all the messed up certificates and download the one
you need once. But this is not a recepie!, just my unproven thoughts. Probably
somebody else can confirm or warn of this procedure.

I wrote an earlier mail on this subject. Good thing nobody replied, since I
more or less worked it out myself. I have now generated a couple of
certificates (app and installer), so I should be able to do the code signing.
However, in my Keychain Access under “My Certificates” I have a lot of folders
all with the same name - com.apple.kerberos.kdc - each containing a file (key)
with the same name again! How am I supposed to distinguish one from another, or
don’t I have to? The Apple Developer Portal warns me to keep copies of my
certificates and public and private keys, but I don’t see how to find out which
ones I generated just now and which ones are just old.

It would be great to hear from someone who knows.

A couple of years ago, I got a lot of advice on this list about code signing
Mac apps that are not being distributed via the Mac App Store, and I got some
of it working. Trying to revive that knowledge and working with a different
computer, I seem to have come unstuck at stage one, which is the generation of
a valid certificate. I am a registered Apple developer, but I don’t understand
how I ever got a proper Certification Authority to talk to, or indeed what
happened to the certificate(s) I had then. There doesn’t seem to be much
relevant in my Keychain, and wading through XCode when all you know is LC is a
bit like being taught Hungarian as a foreign language (THFL - or the
equivalent).

Can anyone give me just a little clue as to how to get my cert? After that, I
think I know how to use AppWrapper, and indeed I’ve got a nifty LC script from
Trevor deVore that might do the actual signing - but no certificate, no joy.

I’d appreciate any help.

AW: How does 'Apple VPP Education' discount work?

2018-01-10 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hi William,

finally every app in the AppStore is enabled for VPP. You don't have to join
the VPP program, only the customer / school has to.

Your set up a sales price of your app in the appStore for everyone and you
can choose with that option you mentioned in the app settings, if a customer
with a VPP contract gets a 50% discount on that standard price or not.
That’s all

The only restriction on VPP is that no inApp purchases are allowed for the
VPP program. (only apps without inApp purchase)

Available with no discount

On this page it says you can enable 50% discount:

Hi Tiemo,

I am not aware of any issues in the latest version of tsNet with regards to
proxy servers, however there were some fixes for proxy NTLM authentication
addressed in tsNet 1.2.10.

Without knowing the specifics of the networks your application is being used
in, I cannot say if that would address the issue your customers are
experiencing. I would recommend trying the latest version of LC and seeing
if that resolves their issues.

You could also try get a copy of the output of the debug output from tsNet
(see the tsNetSetDebugCallback command) from your application in one of
these environments - it may assist in finding out what the actual issue is.

Charles

tsNet and proxy servers? Charles?

2017-12-04 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello,

I am using very simple "put URL myUrl.php into myResult". Since Version 8
(and still in 8.1.4) I have again and again institutional customers like
schools or government networks with proxys and firewalls, where the tsNet
doesn't succeed to connect to myServer thru the proxys with different error
messages. My old LC 6.x went thru those proxies without any problems after
having set the proxy data into the httpheaders. I can't find any version #
in the tsNet files, so I can't exactly tell, which version of tsNet I am
using in LC 8.1.4, perhaps it is 1.2.8.

Since I have a backdoor in my program without connecting to the internet and
thoses admins don't like long testing and debugging procedures I couldn't
dig any deeper to get more details yet and always had to offer a quick
workaround to those customers. And I can't reproduce the issue here.

1. Is this a known issue and any solution in progress? (Charles?)

2. Is this issue perhaps already solved in 8.1.7 or higher? (Charles?)

Thanks

Tiemo

Hey Friends,

Recently I switched to a Surface 4 Pro running Windows 10. It is a quite
decent machine with an i5 and 8gb of RAM but I barelly can use LiveCode in
it because the IDE is extremelly laggy/slow. Just so that you know, it was a
cold night here and I preferred to close my machine, walk all the way to my
office couple blocks away to fetch my mac and go back home then keep using
it on Windows. Thats how slow it is for me. No other application is
performing badly and yes, I tried running only it without no other program
competing for resources. The symptoms I have are:

* Failure to register keystrokes in the script editor.
* Failure for UI elements to react to clicks.
* Failure for shortcuts to activate desired behavior such as opening
messagebox and other similar things.

Basically unless I take half a second between pressing keyboard keys to type
the script, it will miss half the text.

This is happening on all LC versions I have here which are 9.x and 8.x

(PS: Checked the pending messages and apparently there is nothing there, I
suspected a recurring message hogging up CPU time but thats not the case)

(PS 2: The LC IDE is extremelly slow but all the rest of the machine and
apps behave fine, the CPU is not going to high usage, things appear fine,
they just don't work)

Can someone help?

Andre

You only need the tsNet inclusion for building 64bit Mac standalones.

The tsNet-x86_64 inclusion is currently only for the LC FileMaker plugin.

AW: Finding on online shop window for apps (was Re: Awful quiet around here )

2017-11-14 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Matthias approach seems obviously a nice and trouble-free approach. It only has
the disadvantage, that the email + key can be passed on to other users.

In my business teachers are a relevant part of my customers. From my experience
over the last 20 years teachers are the most down-and-dirty software pirates
(sorry Richmond), so I couldn't go this approach. I experienced it x-times,
that after having sold one license to a teacher, I never got a second order
from the same school. So I (or better an external) created an individual
licensing system for my product, bound to the MAC address of the machine and an
online license-database. It indeed also has some disadvantages, because of the
hard bound to the MAC address, but all of my support is worth the plus of sold
licenses.

David,

i am selling only one app (Mac,Win,Linux) online. I´ve used Kagi until they
finished their business. Kagi was able to integrate my key generator stack into
their order system. I did not had to run my own webserver.

Now i am using Fastspring. Fastspring is doing the complete invoicing and i get
my monthly payout.
My key generator stack is now running on my on-rev account.

Fastspring posts the order information and some “verfication” data to a
livecode script.
The livecode scripts checks if the verification data is correct and sends the
posted email adress to the key generator stack.
The key generator stack then uses the email address to create an unlock key and
returns both, email and unlock key, back to the livecode script which then
returns both to the Fastpring post request.

The key generator stack i am using was created with Zygodact from Jacqueline
Landman-Gay.
https://www.hyperactivesw.com/solutions_zygodact.html

It´s 99USD but it is worth every dollar. You have set up your own generator
stack in minutes.

I´ve created a Livecode lesson some time ago which describes how to use a
Zygodact key generator stack with Fastspring.
http://lessons.livecode.com/m/4068/l/620020

The lesson includes all you need to get it working (including the needed
livecode server script). Of course you need your own key generator stack. ;)

Using the steps in that lesson should you also allow to use any other key
generator stack.

Matthias

If you could file a bug, that would be great.

On Windows, the PDFPrinter has to do a little dance with files so that it
passes a file that cairo will open correctly... However, it sounds like in
your case (perhaps due to WIndows version, or formatting of the target
drive) that the dance is not working correctly.

We'll need to patch cairo a little to get this to work correctly I suspect.

Warmest Regards,

Mark.

P.S. For now, if you output the PDF to a temp file in the same folder, then
'rename' then all should be well.

regression bug: corrupt filename at open printing to pdf

2017-11-09 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello,

LC 8.1.6 and 8.1.7 on Windows:

I create PDFs with "open printing to pdf myFile.pdf". That works fine as far
the filename doesn't contains Umlaute.

If the filename contains Umlaute 2 PDF files are created (yes 2 files!). The
first file has the correct filename with Umlaute, but 0 KB. The second file
has a filename without the Umlaut (no strange replacement char, just one
char less) and the correct content. When debugging, the filename within LC
looks correct with Umlaut. When printing a PDF without Umlaute in the
filename, everything works fine.

I didn't found any bug in the QC, or am I the first one, using printing to
pdf with European characters? Is there a workaround, anything with Unicode
conversion for the filename?

Thanks

Tiemo

Not a one-liner, but I'd be wiling to guess that

repeat for each line L in theData

   put item 2 of L into A1[item 1 of L]

   put item 1 of L into A2[item 2 of L]

   end repeat

will be as quick as any other method.

how to split a list in two directions?

2017-10-27 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello,

I have a delimiter separated list of two columns, first column is an ID,
second column a name.

I need two arrays of this list, one with the first column (ID) as the key
and one with the second column (name) as the key.

With split myArray by CR and ";" I get the first column (the ID) as the key.

Which is the most straight forward approach to get the second array with the
name from the second column as the key? I am sure there is a one liner,
without first shifting the columns of the list in a repeat loop.

Thanks

OT: recommendations for Installer Maker

2017-09-20 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello,

I am using Installer Maker, version 1.8.7 from Mark S. on Mac. This version
is not LC 8 compatible. I don't get any responses on requests anymore from
him (perhaps it's only me?). Does anybody is in contact with him or knows,
if there is a LC 8 compatible version (64bit) available?

I know, that an installer is not the common paradigm on Mac, but there are
several reasons, why I would like to go on with an installer. Before
reengineering the complete structure and logic of my setup, I would like to
go on with an installer. Has anybody experiences or any recommendation for
another commercial "installer maker"? My setup actually consists of two
parts, so one of the main features I need, is to call automatically a second
program after the setup is finished.

Any recommendations?

Thanks, Tiemo

AW: OT: Does anybody know an "official" h.264 directShow filter for windows?

2017-08-29 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hi Sean,

thank you for your links. I had already tested those links. The microsoft
media feature packs are only for the stripped "N" and "KN" versions of
windows to add those components, which are included in the standard windows
systems. Those installers can't be installed on a normal windows.
The intel link is a developer kit, if you plan to develop your own video
player, unfortunately there is no installer for the filter only.

Meanwhile I tested the LAV filter and the ffdShow filter, both are for
playback h.264 videos on the directShow API. But the video can't be played
and LiveCode still tells me " Could not create movie reference" Probably
it's not the filter, but any deeper system component or incompatibility.

Thanks for jumping in
Tiemo

OT: Does anybody know an "official" h.264 directShow filter for windows?

2017-08-29 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello,

It is so frustrating after struggling for years with the Quicktime installer
on windows, all my hope on the new "native" video player is lost.

Since Windows doesn't support h.264 videos on its old directShow API, you
have to install a h.264 codec/filter to playback h.264 videos with LiveCode.

Up to now, I only have found the "LAV Filters" package, which includes an
directShow mp4 filter. Generally this works fine, but I have customers with
Windows 8.1 and 10 machines, who can't play my videos, the screen just keeps
black without notice. Beside of the "K-Lite Mega Codec Pack", which at last
only is a bundle for the LAV filters I didn't found any other directShow
mp4/h.264 filter, not to mention any "official" installer. Has anybody found
any other directShow mp4/h.264 filter yet?

On the other hand, since this total black out only happens on certain
machines, it could be anything from the video card driver to missing media
components in windows. But here also I didn't found yet any hint or clue.

Thanks for your experiences

Tiemo

Hi from Beautiful Brittany,

LiveCode 5.5 (I know, I can't afford the updates - Am I the only one ?) Sierra
10.12.3

On my Mac, I have successfully run Audio and Video functions
(Quicktime) MP3 for Audio, MP4/Mov for Video, for some years.

Recently moving the app to PC (Windows 7, with Quicktime loaded), all my Audio
files work fine, and MOST of the videos work fine also.
But a few Video files play the audio but DO NOT SHOW the Video (screen is
blank).

I notice that the files which do not run correctly are quite big, sometimes
MP4, sometimes Mov (no obvious reasons). Otherwise - Mystery !!

My scripts have run a thousand times on Mac, but just the strange glitches
(with larger Video files MP4/Mov PERHAPS ?) on the PC.

I can send scripts if necessary.

Any ideas ? - Any 5.5 users still out there, somewhere .. ?

Subsiduary question : I bought 5.5 Mac (years ago) and I am happy with it.
Am I authorised to load the 5.5 PC version with the same Password ? It could
help me to isolate this problem ………

Long Live LiveCode

can't play h.264 on some windows machines

2017-08-25 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello,

for the video guys amongst you.

As we know windows can't play h.264 mp4 videos with the old by LC used
directShow API natively. You have to install additionally mp4 filters. I am
using the LAV filters in my projects, which usually work fine and the mp4
videos can be played from my LC 8.1.4 programs fine.

But from time to time, I have a customer, who can't play my videos in my LC
program on his windows 8.1 or windows 10 computers, though the LAV setup was
successful, at least without errors. And without videos my programs are not
usable. I couldn't find any solution yet for those customers and didn't see
any common factor of the affected machines.

I don't want wo change the h.264 codec, since it runs fine on most of the
machines and yes, we tested without antivirus enabled. Since I can't
reproduce the issue on any of my machines, it is very hard to drill it down.

Has anybody experienced similar problems with mp4 videos on windows and has
found the critical issue or missing link?

Thanks for sharing

Tiemo

OT: Anybody good in rewrite rules in htaccess?

2017-08-21 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello,

I wanted to migrate my domain from http to https, but I fail with my
Livecode programs, which communicate with some php programs in one directory
on my domain (see my previous post).

Since I am not able to combine the rewrite htaccess in my domain root with
an authentication htaccess in my php directory, so that my LiveCode programs
can call the PHPs, I got the idea to define the rewrite rules for all
directories BESIDE of the directory with my PHPs.

Is this possible in the main htaccess in the root of my domain (without
putting an individual htaccess in each directory)? Has anybody perhaps an
example on how to exclude a directory in the rewrite rules?

Thanks

Tiemo

AW: htaccess rewrite rule to https let my apps stop working

2017-08-21 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
I used the rewrite conditions to https from Matthias in the root of my
domain and build a new LC 8.1.5 standalone including the revsecurity.dll.
like Tom pointed out, but I still get an error.
The return value of my php is surprisingly some garbage html code instead of
my php return value and "the result" of my put URL statement is: " tsneterr:
HTTP response code 401 returned from server".
The only "special" thing I can see on my domain is, that I have another
htaccess in the directory of my PHPs, with a password protection for this
sub-dir, which works since years fine without this rewrite condition. The
"401" error (authentication failed) points to this password protection in
the sub-htaccess.
But I don't see the relation of the rewrite condition in the root htaccess
to this password authentication in the php directory. There is the end of my
server knowledge.
Can anybody shed some light on this?
Thanks

T.

Had a similar experience while migrating my site to https. What I found was
my standalones were missing the revsecurity.dll external. After rebuilding
those to include revsecurity.dll, the standalones were able to contact my
site and access stacks and other files there without changing my links from
http to https, since the htaccess was managing that.

Notes: On Windows, that must be at the same level as the standalone exe
itself rather than the externals folder. And codesign your externals as well
as standalones.

HTH,
Tom B.

keys on keyboard return different characters

2017-08-21 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hi, have you ever experienced the following phenomenon?

A customer of me tells me that pressing a Umlaut key (äüö) on a German
keyboard sometimes shows the correct Umlaut in my LiveCode program, but
sometimes only hieroglyphs. Sometimes the correct char shows up after having
hit multiple times / or harder the same key. I am using the old standard
font Tahoma on stack level, inherited to all fields, which obviously is
installed on the machine, otherwise the correct chars never would appear.
Since this phenomenon only happens in my LiveCode (8.1.4) program, not in
Word or any other program, it must be related to LiveCode. But how and what?
Keyboard driver or foreign system font or language would affect all programs
on this machine.

Ever experienced anything similar?

AW: htaccess rewrite rule to https let my apps stop working

2017-08-18 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hi Matthias,
Thanks for your example, I'll give it a try
using these Rewrite rules, you could stay with plain http:// URLs in your LC
code? And LC doesn't notice the difference and everything works as before? Do
you call PHPs on your server? Could there be a difference between html and php
calls with return values?

Hi Tiemo,

it´s messed up.
Please use the link

to download the textfile.

I´ve forgot to mention that you have to replace yourdomain.com

Hi Mark,

I think the oldest version was build with LC 6.7. As far as I can see that
version supports https.
Is there any characteristic on the standalone, to identify the engine
version used?
I will give a redirect a try. Thanks for your ideas

I wonder if using a URL redirect, rather than rewrite might work better:

https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-create-temporary-and
-permanent-redirects-with-apache-and-nginx

I might be wrong here but I think rewriting just changes the path which
apache uses to determine what to return; a redirect causes a 'Redirection'
return value to the client so the client can refetch at the (redirected)
URL.

Unless the distributed versions built with old versions of LiveCode were
built with HTTPS support built-in then they are very unlikely to work with
either a redirect or rewrite.

Even if you do a redirect/rewrite on the server, the client has to be able
to handle the protocol which the server produces correctly.

Warmest Regards,

Mark.

htaccess rewrite rule to https let my apps stop working

2017-08-18 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello,

I attached a certificate to our domain and started switching our domain /
web from http to https, because of the security alerts of some browsers
saying that our site isn't safe. So far so good. Our web hoster recommended
to put a rewrite rule into the htaccess to redirect all http calls on https.
So far so good. That works fine with all URLs in a browser.

BUT all of my LiveCode programs with http:// calls for php programs on my
server don't work anymore. I get different errors.

I am not good with what is happening behind the scenes of htaccess rewrite
rules and have no idea if and what I could do, beside of changing all http
calls in my LC programs to https. My thinking was, that the rewrite rule
would just switch each http call to https on the server, but keeps finding
all html and php files. That works obviously fine with all URLs in a
browser. But why doesn't my LC program likes that rewriting? The PHP
programs should be found the same with https and should return the wanted
value as with http - or not? How is LiveCode affected by this rewrite?

I can't just change all URLs in all my LC programs from http to https,
because my customers have lots of old version of my programs out there,
which are not anymore maintained, which were created with any very old LC
version I don't know anymore, etc.

Any light on what is going wrong to my LC URL calls and if there is anything
I can do is highly appreciated.

AW: How do I specify the papersize name for printing?

2017-08-07 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
One part of my question is answered. If I want to print on the standard
paper, I may not specify the printpapersize, then the printer won't ask for
a user specific paper.
But if I am not sure, which paper is standard on the users printer, I have
to define the size in case I need specific dimensions, but would like to get
the standard paper, if it is "A4" and available.
And what about other paper names?

Hi Tiemo,

- When you "Search for Inclusions", the standalone builder looks for
keywords in the scripts of your objects, to detect a specific inclusion.
For example if it finds <revOpenDatabase("SQLite",...)> it will
automatically add SQLite in the Inclusions,

- I think in LC 8 the first time you switch to "Select Inclusions", only the
"Ask Dialog" and "Answer Dialog" inclusions are chosen.

>>>>I assume that the inclusion with the "globe icon" is for the
browser widget
Yes, this is correct.

>>>> What are the inclusions "browser" (jigsaw icon) and "browser
(CEF)" for?
Those are for the old revBrowser external. So if you use the
"revBrowserOpen" command, you have to include "browser", and if you use the
revBrowserOpenCEF" command you have to include "browser(CEF)"

Best regards,
Panos

Could you please double-check if your original code works with pasting to MS

set the clipboarddata["image"] not compatible with Adobe Photoshop

2017-08-04 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello,

LC 8.1.5, Windows 10

export snapshot from grp "ScreenShot" to tScreenshot as JPEG

set the clipboarddata["image"] to tScreenshot

The following paste command works in most programs, like MS Paint, MS Word,
but not with Adobe Photoshop. Here the past menu is greyed out, so that
there is nothing to be pasted.

Is this known? Can I do anything special for Photoshop or is it just again
one more regression bug? (in old versions it has worked with Photoshop)

How do you detect the necessary inclusions?

2017-08-03 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello,

I think in former times, when you once have choosen "Search for required
inclusions", LiveCode once has checked all necessary inclusion, so that you
got an idea for the needed ones, when you afterwords wanted to selected them
manually (e.g. the automatic didn't selected all needed inclusions).

Today in 8.1.5 LC doesn't mark anymore any needed inclusions, after having
let it search for the required ones. At least the browser widget was not
checked, though I have an browser widget in my stack. How do you handle this
to get the right inclusions?

Btw. There are three browser inclusions and I don't know, which one is for
what purpose. I assume that the inclusion with the "globe icon" is for the
browser widget, because it has the same icon, but there are 3 browser
inclusions. What are the inclusions "browser" (jigsaw icon) and "browser
(CEF)" for?

Video plays on Win 8.1 only when Windows MediaPlayer is open

2017-08-03 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hello,

LC 8.1.4, Windows 8.1

I am using the Windows standard videoPlayer API DirectShow with h.264
videos. LAV filters for playback of h.264 are installed. On a customer
machine something weired happens.

After starting the video, the videoscreen stays black, no video is seen.

If the user klicks at the title bar of my program window and drags it around
the screen, the video is seen. When he stops, the video keeps black.

So I thought, this must be a strange issue of how the graphic card handles
the screen/video buffer. I also tested with alwaysbufferon true/false
without any change of the issue.

By chance the user tested to play one of my videos in the standard Microsoft
MediaPlayer (which worked fine) and while this MediaPlayer is open, all
videos can also be seen in my program. As soon, as the MediaPalyer is
closed, the videos again can't be seen in my program. I have no idea, what
could be the releated issue between the Microsoft MediaPlayer and the
LiveCode VidePlayer, especially, because the MS MediaPlayer uses the Media
Foundation API and LC the DirectShow API. The only explanation for me would
be, that the MediaPlayer switches a system jumper behind the sceens, which
changes anything in handling the video buffer, but as I don't have any more
known options in LC as "alwaysBufferOn", I have no idea, if there is
anything I could test or check anymore.

Any ideas welcome.

Tiemo

AW: AW: load URL is broken in 8.1.4

2017-07-31 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Hi Mark,
thank you for your explanations. What I can understand are the regressions
switching from 6 to 7/8, because of widely new underlying architecture and
components. That was a huge step. There I had a lot of sympathy. What is much
more harder to understand and acceptable are the regressions within version 8.
I would think that there is not such a general exchange of components under the
hood from 8.1.4rc1 to 8.1.4, which would make a total test of every detail
necessary. My first idea was a bug in tsNet.dll, but this "load URL" bug is not
caused by the different versions of tsnet, but definitively by LC 8.1.4.

Betreff: Re: AW: load URL is broken in 8.1.4

I don't think there is anyway we can deny that the transition from 6.x to 7.x
caused a lot of regressions.

This is why we have a strict policy of handling maintenance releases now - i.e.
we work very hard to ensure each maintenance version is strictly better than
before.

I know of a number of users who have had similar difficulties moving from 6
straight to 8 - however, barring the occasional error (e.g. The backdrop fiasco
and the load URL one you mention directly) 8.1.(x+1) has had less regressions
relative to 6 - and no regressions relative to 8.1.x.

Also (as far as we can) regressions relative to older versions get very high
priority in our bug fixing queue.

So things might not yet be perfect but I'd hope that everyone can see that
we've made great strides (indeed, we've made good progress on fixing issues
which have been around a lot longer recently - even back to the very early days
of the MetaCard engine).

No-one likes encountering regressions - however in a system as complex and
broad as ours they are often unavoidable.

Every one sees a different view of the elephant so to speak - and we try to act
as quickly as we can when issues are reported (usually seeeing them fixed in
the next maintenance release).

Warmest Regards,

Mark.

Hello,

For my automatic update mechanism I am downloading a zip file from a web
server, extracting the zip file and starting the downloaded update.

I am doing this since years, without having changed anything in my code. Now
in 8.1.4, Windows 10 this load URL downloads a "broken/corrupted" empty zip
file, which breaks my whole update process. In 8.1.4 rc1 this still has
worked and in 8.1.5 it seems to work again without any changes in my code or
the zip file. I didn't tested yet 8.1.6 and 9.

I had done a minor change in my program, completely far off the download
handler and just build a new standalone for a new CD production and thought
I'll take the "stable" release 8.1.4 instead of the last build with 8.1.4
rc1 for the new production. Because it was only a minor bug fix in my
program and I only switched from 8.1.4 to 8.1.4 rc1 I didn't tested each and
every possible feature of my program, before going into the production of a
new release. Only by a great chance I discovered that my update process is
broken. If I would have sold this new CD production, I would never have been
able to update my program again, because the update process would have been
broken.

In all the years working with RunRev/LiveCode I never have experienced so
many, frequently regression bugs as in LC 8. I had at least 10-20 regression
bugs in LC 8, since switching from 6.7. Almost in each single release
candidate and each general release there are new regression bugs of old and
common features so that it is a game of hazard to use a new release. I have
no idea, what is going on behind the scenes in Edinborough, if it is related
to the open source development, so that everybody can create regression
bugs, but this isn't anymore a reliable software development. The complete
responsibility is passed to us.

Sorry, but I am really pissed off and my trust in every new release has
dropped to zero.

AW: file suffix isn't connected to the right standard program

2017-07-26 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB via use-livecode
Solved!
I have to sets of the same videos on my machine, the old ones Quicktime, the
new ones mp4 and I "just" had the path to the videos still on the old set of
videos. So the problem was, that I tried to play my old QT videos (with a
Sorenson codec) with the new player object without QT as mp4. That couldn't
work.
Thanks Klaus for the crucial hint to let me think into the right direction.

Hi Klaus,
at least the icon of the saved video file doesn't shows anymore BBEdit, but
now "QT MPEG4". Though all other "real" mp4 files on my Mac don't show any
program icon, but a thumbnail preview of the video as the file icon.
And it still doesn't plays within LC.
Thanks for the idea!

you should try set the filetype before you "spit out" the custom property:
...
## No need to check for platform, this does nothing on Windows:
set the filetype to "mp42" ## Hope my memory serves me right :-) put the
mystoredVideo of stack myStack into URL "binfile:myPath/myVideo.mp4"
...
At least worth a try.

Obviously "the filetype" thing is still not compeltely deprecated by Apple.

There is so much confusion regarding licenses! Ironically one of the main
purposes of the MPEG-LA group is to simplify licensing for users and
distributors by centralizing the process.

From suspect amateur legal advice from internet forum "experts", opaque and/or
seemingly non-complimentary statements from software distributors and MPEG-LA
itself, and the lack of comprehensive definitive information, it's really hard
for someone interested in getting it "right" to know what to do without hiring
expensive attorneys.

Regarding the ENCODER distributed with device OSs and software, including
professional software, whose EULAs state that use of the encoder has only been
licensed for personal and non-commercial use; it seems from what the MPEG-LA
says that this does not mean there is another level of license required to use
the software in professional production. It points to the possible necessity of
royalty payments for finished content distribution. Please see:

<https://bemasc.net/wordpress/2010/02/02/no-you-cant-do-that-with-h264/>

  and:

<http://www.librevideo.org/blog/2010/06/14/mpeg-la-answers-some-questions-about-avch-264-licensing/>
(This is a very long back and forth, you have to read all of it to gather all
the information.)

The distribution of encoded content is completely separate from the encoder
issue. Content distributors might be wise to request a license even if their
usage does not trigger royalty payments.
http://www.mpegla.com/main/default.aspx

Sorenson has not paid, nor could it begin to calculate how to pay any royalties
due on content distributed by its own users, but it is clear you don't have to
pay any additional fee simply to use Squeeze to produce content for paid
distribution. (According to the MPEG-LA licensing associate.) You could be
required to pay to distribute that content depending on your circumstances.

When distributing content via YouTube for exaqmple, MPEG-LA view YouTube as the
distributor and liable for any licensing fees, not the content creator. (Again,
according to the MPEG-LA licensing associate.)

I hope this was helpful but I make no promises :)

I think the source of the problem that there is no standard codec for h.264
on windows is, that LiveCode uses the almost deprecated directShow API and
not the current Microsoft media foundation API. For MMF there probably is a
standard codec for h.264 available on the machine.
That’s really a pity, that Edinburgh implemented this old API, which is
almost deprecated and not the current microsoft foundation after having
waited so many years for the switch from QT to a new standard. Now it bites
us again in our daily work, like many years QT. So we went from worse to
bad.

They make files available in more than one format to accommodate various
browsers. The player and the browser negotiate which file to use. This is
the common solution to the problem.

Hi Warren,
thanks for your ideas.
It might be, that I am using any special encoding option. Since I don't have
one of those incompatible devices, I can't test it out easily, but if it get
worse, I'll have to investigate it deeper.
I already tried other codecs for encoding with Sorenson squeeze, but didn't
found any other codec, which creates so small files, as the Sorenson 2-pass
VBR codec. With this codec I could shrink the videos of my app to 2 GB, all
other tested codecs resulted at least with 4 GB, what is a not tolerable
increase of storage on a smartphone. So up to now I stay with the Sorenson
codec and have some customers, who can't use my app.

Tiemo,

Is it possible that you selected encoding options that the decoder couldn't
handle? That is to say it's not - might not be - that Sorenson isn't
compatible per se, but that you have to select options which are compatible?
This has always been an issue. There may also be issues with the container.
You have to select a conservative profile and the right audio format for
maximum compatibility. I would encourage you to look into this. Obviously,
this assumes these devices have some kind of h264 capability. Many flaming
hoops to jump through...

Are you sure that a license is needed for H.264 playback? That could seriously
impact the viability of YouTube or Vimeo, if all users had to pay a license fee.

My hope is that the license is just paid by the encoder tool maker. If you’re
using Adobe Media Encoder you don’t have to pay a license, Adobe already did.

In the hope that playback doesn’t involve paying a fee, you could use non-H.264
encoders that make videos that are played back by anything that can handle
H.264. That might allow you to use your own tool without a license fee, and
still make videos that can play back everywhere.

Here is an article that talks about how to solve a gamma/contrast issue that
happens with most H.264 encoders:

https://myth.li/2010/07/how-to-fix-the-h264-gamma-brightness-bug-in-quicktime/

The solution they have is to use an x264 encoder, and the article has links to
a QuickTime component, so that you could export to x264 from anything that uses
QuickTime. The results are better looking than regular H.264.
