Why need there be such a long-winded discussion anent download time?

Surely we are all not so impatient a 90 minute or so wait is not that
significant to move from a Release

Candidate to a Stable version?

In previous times this was, for me, at normal speeds. I know others
suffered from slow downloads.

Yes! That's my typical experience. (Except lower than 500 kb.)
LC download usually takes forever, and sometimes fails altogether.

So in fact, my intention was only to START the 9.6.2 download and come
back later to check on it. The 5 MB/sec was a pleasant surprise!

> yesterday

Do you remember approx. what time of day?
And was it soon after a release announcement?

My happy 5 MB/sec was at around 2 AM Eastern Time on a weekday.
It was not right after any release announcement.
Also from the download page, not the Updater app.

Perhaps a time of lower LC traffic? Or just a fluke?
Felt great to finish up the DL and run a new IDE within two minutes

Best wishes,

Curry Kenworthy

Important: Starting April 26, 2021, all iPhone and iPad apps submitted to
the App Store must be built with Xcode 12 and the iOS 14 SDK or later. This
means that, if you wish to submit apps to the AppStore you will have to be
running at least macOS 10.15.4 in order to be able to install the necessary
version of Xcode.

[ANN] Release 9.6.2 RC-5

2021-04-14 Thread panagiotis merakos via use-livecode
Dear list members,

We are pleased to announce the release of LiveCode 9.6.2 RC-5.

Getting the Release
===
You can get the release at https://downloads.livecode.com/livecode/ or via
the automatic updater.

Release Contents

LiveCode 9.6.2 RC-5 comes with 2 regression fixes:

- revUpdateGeometry in resizeStack handler causes a lock up when
maximizing/unmaximizing stack on Big Sur
- Script Editor not resizable - it is freezing up on Big Sur

For the full list of all fixes, updates and enhancements please see the
release notes:

http://downloads.livecode.com/livecode/9_6_2/LiveCodeNotes-9_6_2_rc_5.pdf

Known issues

- The Browser widget's native layer is not shown in some Linux distros with
Cinnamon window manager.
- The use of the Browser widget is not supported on Ubuntu 18.04 64 bit LTS
yet.

Required Software
=
To build iOS apps with LiveCode you must have the appropriate versions of
Xcode as follows:

  - macOS 10.13.4: Xcode 10.1 - LiveCode builds iOS apps using the iOS 12.1
SDK
  - macOS 10.14.4: Xcode 11.3.x - LiveCode builds iOS apps using the iOS
13.2 SDK
  - macOS 10.15.4+: Xcode 12.1.x - LiveCode builds iOS apps using the iOS
14.1 SDK

There is a full list of working LiveCode/macOS/Xcode combinations here:
https://livecode.com/docs/9-5-0/faq/faq/

Note: Whilst we endeavour to release updated versions of LiveCode
supporting the latest Xcode/iOS SDKs as quickly as possible; we strongly
recommend disabling automatic update of Xcode or downloading the specific
version of Xcode required directly from the Apple developer portal and
installing it separately.

Important: From the end of June 2020, Apple is only accepting apps built
using iOS13 SDKs. This means that, if you wish to submit apps to the
AppStore you will have to be running at least macOS 10.14 in order to be
able to install the necessary version of Xcode.

Many thanks mark for explaining.
So the IDE is a real 32 bit or a real 64bit application.
Am I understanding it correct that it is the same for the executable an LC
user/devbuilds for Windows? the build of a stack is a real 64bit?

RE: [ANN] Release 9.6.2 RC-4

2021-04-13 Thread chipsm themartinz.com via use-livecode
Hi everyone. I am totally confused by this topic.
I know that I downloaded the LC 9.6.2 RC4 64 bit windows version and Windows 10
,latest update, refuses to run the installer.
I have been watching the list and decided to just wait and see if there would
be a fix for this. I have turned off my McAfee to see if that would help, but
to no avail. I have also tried to install the program using the administrator
option.
Is there any recommendations for a solution to this problem? Is this the
problem that everyone is Listing about?

Sincerely,

Clarence Martin

Both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows IDEs can build 32-bit and/or 64-bit windows
standalones - you can choose in the standalone builder.

Hi Mark.

I downloaded LC 9.6.2 for Windows and installed it on a Server 2012 VM. It
installed in the Program Files (x86) folder. I was under the impression that
only happens when the app is a 32 bit app.

Are you implying the standalones are 64 bit but the LC app is 32? If that were
the case, then no benchmarks done in the IDE would be valid. But it's more
likely I am misinformed.

Windows, macOS and Linux all handle 32-bit vs 64-bit exactly the same

Hmmm... the release notes under Platform support | Windows says

"Note: On 64-bit Windows installations, LiveCode runs as a 32-bit
application through the WoW layer."

On Windows, the 32-bit set of libraries is called WoW
(Windows-on-Windows), on Linux its called 'multi-arch' or 'multilib' (I
think at least?), on macOS its called 'universal executables'.

macOS does have the advantage that the Mach-O binary executable format
allows multiple architectures in the same binary which means it is all
entirely hidden from the user. Neither PE (Windows) nor ELF (Linux)
allow that, so user ends up having to choose the appropriate installer /
run the appropriate installer command.

I’m not sure about that because my Surface Pro X can only run x86-32 apps and
it can run LiveCode. If it was somehow wrapped in 64bits anything, it would say
that it is not compatible with it.

At the turn of the century, so soon after HyperCard's death, it was
understandable that Mac users would be disproportionately represented
among LC customers.

For this to remain the case more than two decades later -- long past the
time when most devs have never heard of HyperCard, Windows maintains
it's 80+% market share, and Linux has a strongly disproportionate usage
among professional developers -- would seem to evidence the difference
between marketing and remarketin, between seeking growth and seeking
remonitization of a fixed audience.

2021-04-08 Thread Sean Cole (Pi) via use-livecode
I'm running it over vnc to a remote server on a single core (2.4Ghz), 4gb
virtual system running Win Server 2016 standard. I edit my code
there directly and have only partial lag due mostly to the screen share,
dropbox scanning and single core nature of it. I've often made my feelings
known about where LC is failing. But this, for me at least, is not one of
them, even with all options on except bracket highlighting (can't remember
why I turned it off).

If you make sure your windows system is clean as it can be you shouldn't
see any serious performance issues. Maybe a bit slower just because (in my
dumb opinion) windoze is rubbish compared with macOS. Photoshop on my
windows pc is less responsive than on my mac. That's not Adobe's fault. LC
is not responsible for what system you are running on or the performance
caveats of one over the other. That's for us to deal with and handle the
best way we can, I guess. But, as highlighted in another thread recently,
what do I know!

Re: [ANN] Release 9.6.2 RC-4

2021-04-07 Thread Sean Cole (Pi) via use-livecode
Lagi, I feel your pain, I do.

However, I only see a moderate amount of unresponsiveness and I can usually
put it down to the way I use it on Windoze in a VM on a Mac. The stack I am
working on at the moment takes 5 seconds to save on mac side but 30 seconds
on the Win10. My colleague running on a fast PC running native Win10 also
sees a 30 second save time. But I am guessing (only guessing, without
putting in any effort) that it is more to do with File Systems than
anything LC related.

Otherwise there is little difference I can find using LC on a Mac or PC.
Until LC9.6.1 where the script editor was uncoloured, 9.6.2RC2 which had a
bunch of editor issues on Mac only, RC3 which went into a loop as you drag
select in a field to scroll the text and select at the same time, again on
Mac side only.

So, without diminishing your feelings, your issue seems to be, not
necessarily unique but, perhaps nuanced to certain circumstances. Have you
tried it in a clean account on your computer? Or, perhaps, another machine.
Or maybe it is linked to the click/drag issue. Then again, I could be wrong
altogether and the performance does indeed need looking at.

Once upon a time, LC used to be coded so much more with LC itself. Now they
seem to spend a lot more time, understandably so, coding it in Atom over
github and rarely experiencing LC in its native form. Perhaps if they did
more often they might notice these issues for themselves while coding in
Windows, Linux and Mac builds of LC. Maybe they should set themselves the
task of building an Atom type editor in LC at home to experience it at its
worst. :)

2021-04-07 Thread Bob Sneidar via use-livecode
I just DL LC 9.6.2 RC4 on a Windows VM running Server 2012R2. Saving is much
faster, although not quite up to speed with the Mac OS. Querying a database
however seems to be quite slow.

When running a tick counter on my MacOS I get this:
sites: 7
devices: 4
accessories: 6
service: 7
service: 6
devices: 6
contacts: 7

On Windows I get this:
sites: 48
devices: 48
accessories: 47
service: 48
service: 48
devices: 47
contacts: 48

anywhere from roughly 6 to 10 times as long.

The script editor in a large script is not very responsive. I get the typing
delay as is described.

I'm not saying you're not seeing an unacceptable slow down on your
system, but as another data point, I have a Windows 10, Dell laptop with
a AMD Ryzen 5 (equivalent of Intel i5) with 16GB and HDD (not SDD) and I
don't see any slow downs like this in LC9.6.2rc 1,2,3 or 4. When I am
developing, I am generally only running a email client, browser, text
editor, and LiveCode. Windows IDE responsiveness seems about the same as
my 16gb MacBook Pro, maybe a hair faster, but then again I use the
Windows laptop a little more often than the MacBook so its hard to say.

I do experience occasions where WIndows 10 slows down - badly - typing
10 characters and waiting 5-10 seconds before any of them appear. Some
of these occasions I have correlated with downloads of Windows updates.
Other I can't explain.

Hi Lagi,

What unresponsiveness in windows 10 are you referring to?
the one that needs wait 0 with messages to avoid a frozen window?

I just reported what i think is a bug that has been there for years and
thats endless high cpu usage when using -ui flag . on WIndows 10 ...
and 7. I think.
I regret not submitting it when I first came across it. Lesson learned.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi

The unresponsiveness in Big Su is fixed and Ive only been asking for 3 or 4
years that the unresponsiveness in windows 10 (and probably 7)
is fixed.

I have a 10th generation core I7 with 16G of ram and it runs like molasses
- especially when using the debugger.
Ive tried EVERYTHING short of running out in the F**g street naked
whistling Dixie and NOBODY at HQ thinks its worth looking at the editor.
Others here have said the same thing - maybe that is why Trevor uses
sublime.

Please don't tell me to exclude AV. I don't have AV , I exclude defender as
well (the grey stuff between my ears is the best AV I have found).

Unresponsive to me is typing 10 characters and seeing them appear one by

between each debugger step ..

I DON'T KNOW WHY I WASTE MY TIME!!

Ive written longer rants than this but I leave them in the draft ( a la

is a joke and we are charged yearly for mainly bug fixes of regressions.

[ANN] Release 9.6.2 RC-4

2021-04-07 Thread panagiotis merakos via use-livecode
Dear list members,

We are pleased to announce the release of LiveCode 9.6.2 RC-4.

Getting the Release
===
You can get the release at https://downloads.livecode.com/livecode/ or via
the automatic updater.

Release Contents

LiveCode 9.6.2 RC-4 comes with 1 regression fix:

- Fix unresponsiveness of engine when scrolling on Big Sur

For the full list of all fixes, updates and enhancements please see the
release notes:

http://downloads.livecode.com/livecode/9_6_2/LiveCodeNotes-9_6_2_rc_4.pdf

Feedback

Please report any bugs encountered on our quality center at
http://quality.livecode.com/

We have a forum available for discussing LiveCode Builder at
http://forums.livecode.com/viewforum.php?f=93

Have fun!

Just out of interest, do you see this just with the Livecode IDE or also with a

Re: [ANN] Release 9.6.2 RC-3

2021-03-16 Thread Richmond via use-livecode

That nonsense about extra monitors seems to be a MacOS 11 "thing".

I generally have 2 powered USB hubs connected via my USB-C to HDMI
monitor things: if they are connected when I start up
no video signal is sent to either my right or my left monitor, only to
the central one. If, having started up like that, I
unplug those 2 hubs, count to 10, and then reconnect them, I get video
signals to all 3 monitors.

Totally Mental!

Best, Richmond.

back again, end now, it works! Now I can even click the buttons in the ”Save
before closing”-dialog that is tucked to the menu bar. I have not been able to
do that before!

The only hiccup now is that the revMenubar starts right aligned on my second
monitor, but I always move it to my second (bigger) screen anyway so that is a
minor bump in the road.

Dear list members,

We are pleased to announce the release of LiveCode 9.6.2 RC-3.

Getting the Release
===
You can get the release at https://downloads.livecode.com/livecode/ or

via

the automatic updater.

Release Contents

LiveCode 9.6.2 RC-3 comes with 6 regression fixes, including:

- Visual effects doesn't work on macOS Big Sur
- Cannot close "Ask Password" dialog as Sheet in modal stack
- mergLA not included in 9.6.2 RC 2
- PDF Widget broken on iOS device

For the full list of all fixes, updates and enhancements please see the
release notes:

http://downloads.livecode.com/livecode/9_6_2/LiveCodeNotes-9_6_2_rc_3.pdf

Known issues

- The Browser widget's native layer is not shown in some Linux distros

with

Cinnamon window manager.
- The use of the Browser widget is not supported on Ubuntu 18.04 64 bit

LTS

yet.

Required Software
=
To build iOS apps with LiveCode you must have the appropriate versions

of

Xcode as follows:

- macOS 10.13.4: Xcode 10.1 - LiveCode builds iOS apps using the iOS

12.1

Note: Whilst we endeavour to release updated versions of LiveCode
supporting the latest Xcode/iOS SDKs as quickly as possible; we strongly
recommend disabling automatic update of Xcode or downloading the

specific

version of Xcode required directly from the Apple developer portal and
installing it separately.

Important: From the end of June 2020, Apple is only accepting apps built
using iOS13 SDKs. This means that, if you wish to submit apps to the
AppStore you will have to be running at least macOS 10.14 in order to be
able to install the necessary version of Xcode.

I just downloaded and tested on my MBP16(2019), single screen, MacOS

BTW, visual effects work a dream and even macOS CoreImage effects work

Thanks for that!

Re: [ANN] Release 9.6.2 RC-3

2021-03-15 Thread Richmond via use-livecode
I have just downloaded Indy 9.6.2 RC-3, done the licensing "dance" and
fired it up

without any problems at all:

macOS 11.3 Beta 3, 2018 Mac Mini, 3 monitors.

I suspect you have some background process (i.e. something set to run at
startup) that is

clogging up the works.

Best, Richmond.

the icon in the dock LiveCode doesn’t quit. Only thing I can do is to ”Force
Quit” the application.

Running macOS 11.2.2 on a MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018) with a dual monitor setup.

I have not experienced this (Windows 10), but in the ast, similar new
version startup issues have been resolved by deleting the livecode
preferences file and then starting the new version to reset the prefs to
defaults (and then set them back to whatever you want.

* and this particular LC version number isn’t in the list on the

Are you sure? If I remember correctly, you have to scroll further down for

[ANN] Release 9.6.2 RC-3

2021-03-12 Thread panagiotis merakos via use-livecode
Dear list members,

We are pleased to announce the release of LiveCode 9.6.2 RC-3.

Getting the Release
===
You can get the release at https://downloads.livecode.com/livecode/ or via
the automatic updater.

Release Contents

LiveCode 9.6.2 RC-3 comes with 6 regression fixes, including:

- Visual effects doesn't work on macOS Big Sur
- Cannot close "Ask Password" dialog as Sheet in modal stack
- mergLA not included in 9.6.2 RC 2
- PDF Widget broken on iOS device

For the full list of all fixes, updates and enhancements please see the
release notes:
http://downloads.livecode.com/livecode/9_6_2/LiveCodeNotes-9_6_2_rc_3.pdf

Known issues

Feedback

Please report any bugs encountered on our quality center at
http://quality.livecode.com/

We have a forum available for discussing LiveCode Builder at
http://forums.livecode.com/viewforum.php?f=93

Have fun!

Re: [ANN] Release 9.6.2 RC-2

2021-02-21 Thread doc hawk via use-livecode
michael mentioned,

> Yesterday I downloaded SuperCard 4.8.1 Trail wich still is maintained.

I still have my SuperCard 1.5 install disks . . .

I bought it because it could have two windows open at once.

When HyperCard 2.0 came out, it did everything I needed from supercard, but
there was no back-export available

So some new things got converted to hypercard, using the basic engine I’d
written, but I didn’t feel like writing the script to turn every object in the
stack into a text list of its properties and another to create the new
hypercard stack.

When I started on this project, yikes, a decade ago now, I did manage to
partway navigate the chain to loading the old stacks, but it was an odd dance
involving an old MacClassic and reading Mac disks on a freebsd floppy . . . if
the scsi Zip drive hadn’t failed, it would;d have been a lot easier to transfer
. . .

Thank you for reminding me. I still have a few emails from the old SC
list. I just did a dive into that archive and found fragments of a
thread between you and me and Grant Schampel (I sure do miss that man).

Kinda cool how paths cross and cross again, bound together over decades
through the bond of sharing scripting.

And FWIW "ky" might just be the best spelled-out form of
the modem connect sound I've seen. :)

Supercard is no longer very super (remember playing around with it in 1994)
as it is 32-bit MacOS only.

2021-01-12 Thread Sean Cole (Pi) via use-livecode
The transition to AS Mac OS will be pretty seamless. XCode flags up most of
the code base that needs modding.

Where it might fall over for us is if we use old widgets that won't get
updated for any potential MacOS code deprecations.

But LC, I'm sure, will keep up-to-date (ish) as we see already. LC probably
performs better than the previous Intel Mac equivalent on the newer
machines.

I look forward to the day I can transition to an ARM based Mac. Those puppies

the same price point. But … I’ll be using my Mac Book Air for years to come,

 We've been here before...

 68k -> PPC
 Classic -> OS X
 PPC -> Intel
 32-bit -> 64-bit

 Adding:
 Intel -> M1
...is just another day in Appleland.

The engine has been carried forward well through all those changes, I'm
not worried about this latest one.

I am afraid i am at a crossroads now.
Unfortunately prices for Mac hardware increased over the years. I will
definitely not buy a M1 Mac.
I will use my iMac as long as i get updates for macOS and will then switch back
completely to Windows.
Most of the software i am using is available for macOS and Windows. Okay
Ulysses is one of the programs i will be definitely missing when going back to
Windows.
But i am sure i will find an alternative. Maybe Obsidian, currently not as good
as Ulysses, but i'll see.

We've been here before...

68k -> PPC
Classic -> OS X
PPC -> Intel
32-bit -> 64-bit

Adding:
Intel -> M1
...is just another day in Appleland.

The engine has been carried forward well through all those changes, I'm
not worried about this latest one.

Up until the time Apple decides everything has to be M1, at which support for
Rosetta is withdrawn. The question is, how long do Intel apps have to live?
Deja Vu all over again. (see what I did there?)

Re: [ANN] Release 9.6.2 RC-2

2021-01-12 Thread panagiotis merakos via use-livecode
Hello Andre,

The current x86_64 (i.e. Intel-based) build of LiveCode, as well as any
x86_64 standalones created by it, are expected to run seamlessly on M1
Macs, via "Rosetta" (i.e. the translation/compatibility layer that enables
a M1 Mac to run apps built for an Intel-based Mac). The M1 Mac will ask you
if you want to install Rosetta the first time you try to launch an app made
for Intel.

What is not supported though, yet, are native ARM LiveCode builds, that
will be able to create ARM standalones for M1 Macs. This is in our TODO
list, but I cannot provide an ETA for this.

Hope this helps :)

Cheers,
Panos
