Re: [OT] My first impressions of Chromebook
I don't think I could abide the No Network - No Work thing. There are a lot of things I like to do with the iPad which do not require a network. Book reading for example. Also I like to map my progress on road trips. Playing games on a flight, or watching a movie or playing music, all things people like to do with their iPads when not connected to a network. How about when you are out camping, and there is no 3g? There are mapping apps that allow you to pre-download terrain maps for where you are going to be, so you can navigate without any networking. Because of this I do not think these kind of devices are a real competitor for iPads. They are in fact a different animal. I suspect though that Google will probably have some kind of caching thing built into them at some point, like they do now for Google Docs. People must be clamoring for this right now. Re: [OT] My first impressions of Chromebook
Google is planning for offline mode by the end of the summer. Certainly, each to his own-- what works for one, doesn't word for another. I still am not sure owning a Chromebook and iPad is mutually exclusive-- as I own both, and use both. Though I've been using my iPad quite a bit less lately... I take it you know there's a developer option in settings, where you can get OS updates as they happen? Not sure if that does the offline thing yet, I'm just doing an update now. Re: [OT] My first impressions of Chromebook
I couldn't find the developer option is settings. Can you tell me where you found it? I did find an interesting article on Chromoting which is described as desktop sharting from your Chrombook to your PC. Evidently, it's in development right now, but the idea is you install an extension on your Chromebook and one on your Chrome browser in your PC, and then you will be able to virtually control your PC from Chromebook. I would certainly be very interested in this, as it would allow me to code in LC when on my Chromebook. One other thing, when announced, Google mentioned they are not discouraging hacking the Chromebooks. Re: [OT] My first impressions of Chromebook
Click on the wrench, then About Chrome OS, and in the top bit of text in the dialog that appears is a More Info link, click that. You then have the choice of setting Stable, Beta, and Dev - Unstable. I'm on that one! On Jun 21, 2011, at 5:25 PM, Chipp Walters wrote: I couldn't find the developer option is settings. I suspect this is because the OS is based on Linux and for some reason, Netflix has some specific requirements which only run on MacOS and Windows and iOS. There are a number of threads in the Ubuntu forums about this. Turns out it's because NetFlix' content providers require DRM systems like Microsoft Silverlight, which aren't currently supported on Linux and Linux derivatives like Android and Chrome OS. Given how much money MS spends keeping Linux at bay, I doubt we'll ever see a Silverlight implementation for those platforms. Apparently Netflix wants this to happen, but their providers are moving slowly. So with any luck we'll see Netflix available for Chrome OS and Linux in the coming months. Finger crossed. I have mixed feelings about chromebooks. I tend to place them in the same category of netbooks and then they lose the competition but I know they are a whole different thing with a different purpose. I just think they should be cheaper. $250 would be the right price for an online appliance like that. My own online gizmo is my OLPC XO-1... Re: [OT] My first impressions of Chromebook
Andre, I think the Chromebook really competes well with EPCDs (Everday Portable Computing Devices) like iPad more than a notebook. I understand it's a direct competitor to netbooks, but it has more of a full notebook computer experience as far as speed and display go. It truly is larger than a netbook-- in fact it's larger than the small MacBook Air, but it weighs about the same. I'm defining EPCDs as devices you can take with you and use all day long, with instant on and instant internet access. Unfortunately, few if any notebooks really qualify. For instance, here I am at a Mexican food diner after finishing a late lunch with my wife-- she's left and I thought I'd sit here and check my mail and deal with any business issues which have come up. I can do all this now MUCH faster than previously with my iPad because my touch typing is so much better than my iPad typing. I figure I spend about 80% of my iPad time doing internet related stuff-- emails, RSS feeds, web browsing, etc.. I can do all this easily from my Chromebook, PLUS now I can actually work with Google Docs, too. The Android and iPad GDocs implementation is sad at best and for the most part just wrecks the formatting for other viewers after you edit something on an iPad/Android. Ugh. Still, no Skype and no GTM is big. On Mon, Jun 20, 2011 at 9:11 AM, Andre Garzia an...@andregarzia.com wrote: I have mixed feelings about chromebooks.
