Not every certificate issuer offers the 'certificate in cloud' (software token)
solution.
I for example have a Certum certificate. Certum offers for the OV and the EV
certificates both the certificate in cloud and the eToken solution. So one can
choose.
For my OV certificate in the cloud I paid not more than i paid for my old
3-year certificate.
I purchased not directly from Certum, but from SSLPoint and paid 329 Eur for a
3-year OV certificate in the cloud.

For those who are interested in a Cloud certificate
Leaderssl.com is currently selling the 3-years Certum OV cloud certificate
even for only 300 Euros and the EV for 600 Euros.

The cloud based solutions works this way:
You have to install a mobile app on your Android or iOS smart phone and also a
desktop app on your Windows pc.
The mobile app creates a one time password which you need to login with your
desktop app into the Certum "Cloud" or however this could be called.
As soon and as long you are logged in to the cloud service the certificate is
"included" in your certificate store.
Signtool.exe and any also other signing tool, e.g. Jarsigner, which is able to
sign using a token, can access the certificate then.

The eToken solution works similar. You have to install a driver for the eToken
on your Windows PC.
As soon as signtool tries to access the certificate from the eToken, the driver
software asks for the password to access the eToken.

Unfortunately osslsigncode for macOS currently does not support tokens,
therefore it is not possible to sign Windows executabls on macOS anymore when
using those new certificates.
Osslsignode for Linux shall support the new tokens, but i haven't tested it yet.

Yes, prices have gone way up. You now need a physical USB stick with an
encrypted certificate for Windows. I understand there is a cloud option too
but we weren't offered that.

If you go for the USB solution, give yourself some time. We ordered from
Sectigo and while they claim you will get the device in 2 or 3 days, they
didn't send it for 5 weeks, which required numerous support interactions to
determine why the order was lost in the bureaucracy. If that happens to
you, get on phone, the chat bot people are evasive and will tell you it's
processing and you will receive it in "2 or 3 days." Demand to talk to a
supervisor.

My client can be very persuasive when she's pissed off. :)

Re: iOS 16.4.1 breaks connection with LiveCode test feature

2023-04-28 Thread Mike Kerner via use-livecode
i think that's what i'm talking about, but maybe i don't understand what
he's experiencing.
i'm in active development on an app. i'm building it many times per day and
deploying it on my test ipad, running it, and invoking the remote debugger.
since i'm running 16.5 i'm wondering if that might fix it.
what i'm doing that might be slightly different is i'm not using the test
button in the ide to install it, but rather the configurator (my apps are
all using levure, so the build process might be slightly different).

iOS 16.4.1 breaks connection with LiveCode test feature

2023-04-27 Thread Mark Talluto via use-livecode
Hello everyone,

There may be a problem with iOS devices updated to 16.4 or 16.4.1 and Xcode
14.2 as a working combination. The issue between them is that devices may fail
to prepare for development (error from Xcode).

https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/727270

Of course, you can continue to build iOS apps with Xcode 14.2 if you
accidentally allow your device to upgrade to 16.4.1. You cannot test your app
directly from the LiveCode IDE using the test button if your device has been
updated to iOS 16.4 or 16.4.1.

You can build for TestFlight and run your app on your device that way. But, it
is more cumbersome than direct testing from the LiveCode IDE.

I hope this public service announcement is useful to iOS developers using
LiveCode. The short of it is do not allow your iOS devices to update to 16.4.1
for now.

Best regards,
Mark Talluto

Brian was right, but it's the build number that matters rather than the

I'm happy to report there appears to be nothing wrong with the list software.
And in fact, the users are also working as expected.

Thank you to everyone for the responses.

I hope that LC 10 will "fix" the systemVersion() to return customer
meaningful OS version information, but I recognize that is hard to do
when the OS manufacturers (I am looking at YOU Microsoft and Apple) do
not update their OS APIs to return the same versions their MARKETING
people insist on labeling the OSes as!

Or you could execute this windows shell command in the LC shell() function

wmic os get Caption /value

which then would return something like this for example

Caption=Microsoft Windows 11 Enterprise

This here would

return the macOS version and would return Windows 10 on version 10 and Windows
11 on version 11
If you also need this for other Windows version you have to extend it a little
bit

switch the platform
case "Win32"
put shell("ver") into tVersion
set the itemdelimiter to "."
if item 3 of tVersion >22000
then
return "Windows 11"
else
return "Windows 10"
end if
break
case "MacOS"
  get shell("sw_vers -productVersion")
  return it
break
end switch

fine - there's a good chance its multiple actual issues (just as the

LC 9.6.5 RC 2 Speed Test

2021-11-05 Thread Curry Kenworthy via use-livecode

My first LC 9.6.5 RC 2 Speed Test -

Results on Windows 10, current WordLib

- LC 9.6.3:

A.docx - 0.073 seconds
B.docx - 0.518 seconds
C.docx - 0.321 seconds
D.docx - 0.314 seconds
E.docx - 9.202 seconds

- LC 9.6.5 RC 2:

A.docx - 0.05 seconds
B.docx - 0.484 seconds
C.docx - 0.284 seconds
D.docx - 0.289 seconds
E.docx - 7.196 seconds

LC 6.7.11:

A.docx - 0.057 seconds
B.docx - 0.362 seconds
C.docx - 0.114 seconds
D.docx - 0.338 seconds
E.docx - 2.991 seconds

Ratings:

- LC 9.6.5 RC 2 vs LC 9.6.3: 5 Wins, 0 Losses
- LC 9.6.5 RC 2 vs LC 6.7.11: 2 Wins, 3 Losses

Conclusion:

Good progress; if we follow up on these gains
and locate other areas needing optimization,
LC 10/11 can be pretty fleet of foot!

Best wishes,

Re: "Unknown error." in LC when trying to test to connected ios device

2021-09-18 Thread Andrew at MidWest Coast Media via use-livecode
I can’t remember if it throws that specific error, but I recall having problems
when testing to a device with a Development profile and Beta checked in the
Standalone Application settings. This would happen even if your profiles were
clean. Are you using a Dev or Distro profile while testing?

As J. Landman Gay once pointed out, sometimes it comes down to figuring out
what color chicken to sacrifice. The other day I encountered something similar
to what you are describing that was a new one for me. (I don’t recall the exact
issue because I encountered several and they are mixed up in my mind now.) But
one error was actually the result of checking the "build for iOS” button but
forgetting to uncheck the “build for Android” button. I was surprised that LC
couldn’t figure that out based on the target device but, unchecking “build for
Android” solved it. Hoping you find that it is something simple and not the
chicken thing.

Test on android Simulator : app has stopped

2021-01-24 Thread Ludovic THEBAULT via use-livecode
Hello,

I can’t test apps on the android simulator, install are ok, but when the app
launch (even a simple test stack), the app quit suddenly.

I’ve updated Android Studio, SDK, SDK tools. All is uptodate.
I reselect the sdk in the livecode prefs.

I checked all in this lesson.

https://lessons.livecode.com/m/2571/l/625198-livecode-and-android-studio
<https://lessons.livecode.com/m/2571/l/625198-livecode-and-android-studio>

In standalone settings, all Android’s platforms are checked and the minimal
android version is set the Android 6.

What I miss ?

I need to test an app on an device with a notch.

Thanks !

Re: Recommended (simple) Linux distro for Livecode server home dev/test?

2020-05-10 Thread John McKenzie via use-livecode

 Hello, Kieth.

My health problems have kept me from really participating on the list
for a long time but I stayed as I want to get back to using Livecode at
some point. Your question about linux distros for server use on old
hardware though is something I can comment on.

Sorry I did not post this earlier before you more or less made a
decision. At first I though the suggestions made were terrible because
you said it was old hardware. Then I realized the problem is I am old
and the others who responded were not picturing machines from the mid
1990's unlike me.

I would go along with the suggestions made, especially the Lubuntu one
assuming your hardware can handle it. If it cannot please post a
follow up with an idea of how old your hardware is and I will make some
specific recommendations. Let us hope your machine is not so old we
start talking about Slackware installations but if we do I will get you
some help with it. :-)

The best way to make Ubuntu more efficient is to use a desktop
environment (DE) that is less fancy and therefore less resource
intensive. (Any flavour of Ubuntu can make use of any DE just by
installing some extra software packages. Keep that in mind if you for
some reason need to change the DE.)

We could make the system even more efficient by starting with a base
Debian install and building it up piece by piece to what you need.
(Ubuntu is Debian based by the way.) Not as newbie friendly as
installing Lubuntu but not hard either. Just something I am throwing
out there as a backup plan. We can discuss it if you need it, but you
will probably be OK with trying Lubuntu, etc.

Good luck. Post a follow up if your hardware cannot handle the initial
suggestions and we discuss other options.

Agreed that it's Ubuntu. Shouldn't have to worry about the hardware
specs, but do note that the LC release notes limit the "officially
supported" Ubuntu versions to 14.04 and 16.04, if that matters to you
(hint: it shouldn't).

i would use Ubuntu server as there is much info about it

on HowtoForge.com are very nice tutorials on how to setup Linux servers
for several distributions of your choice.

You can use these to set up a VPS, but also a Laptop or whatever to use
as a server.

Ubuntu, without question.

There many great distros, and I don't think there is a single "best".
But Ubuntu has by far the largest installed base, so most of the
tutorials and other support materials you'll find are written with
Ubuntu in mind.

This is especially true on servers. Heck, even on Microsoft's Azure
cloud ecosystem. Ubuntu is the leading OS.

Desktop:

Server:
https://ubuntu.com/download/server

You may change later; some folks like to distro-hop often. But the vast
range of support materials makes Ubuntu the go-to starting point for
getting into Linux.

> Hardware specs would be useful, too - to gauge how far back on the

You can check the requirements at the site, but you probably don't need
to worry about it. If it's for a sever you won't need the GUI desktop
edition, and it's the desktop where requirements tend to be much higher.
There's a flavor of Ubuntu for everything from Raspberry Pi to
supercomputing clusters - you should have no trouble finding one for
your old PCs. The Server edition should get you up and running on just
about any machine made in the last 10 years or more.

If you want a GUI desktop edition and have an old machine that's a bit
underpowered for Ubuntu, there's a lightweight flavor you can use:

https://lubuntu.net/

Lubuntu is the leanest Ubuntu flavor I've tried. It's been running on
my desk almost continuously for the last decade, downloading, collating,
and posting data for the info you see in LiveNet (see the GoLiveNet
plugin in LC's Plugins menu).

I prefer Ubuntu's Gnome Shell for my main workstation, but on
lower-powered machines I've been impressed with how efficiently Lubuntu
runs.

<https://pypi.org/project/chardet/>

Thank Mark.

I apologize. I did miss the reference to Chardet. At one point we looked
at wrapping a C++ interface to the Mozilla code, but we don't have
anyone here who has had the time to learn LCB and FFI, I know! We should
make the time!

It even comes with a command-line script (chardetect) which would
allow to compare your detector with that one.

However, on further digging it appears that this does not (as it
stands) detect MacRoman which is obviously a key requirement here.

MacRoman detection is a essential requirement. One of our selling
points, since many Universities these days have people on mixed
platforms, is that our tool is nearly identical across macOS and Windows
to facility researcher collaborations, so we do have people sending
files created on their Macs to Windows team members and vice versa, so
we have to detect MacRoman and CP1252 on both platforms.

There is a stale PR for that though
<https://github.com/chardet/chardet/pull/5> so the method used here is
obviously possible to extend to that.

From what I have read the Python one is a python reimplementation of
Mozilla's 'Universal Charset Detector' which, from what I have read,
is/was pretty much state of the art - reading through the chardet docs
(https://chardet.readthedocs.io/en/latest/how-it-works.html#single-byte-encodings
is perhaps the most pertinent) it sounds like its single-byte
detectors use 2-byte sequences to try and distinguish.

There is a special case for Latin-1 (1252) which is needed because
English text looks the same in a large number of encodings - this
works by looking for curly quotes and other special symbols by the
look of it. (The MacRoman addition in the stale PR above, is also a
Latin-1 like special-case - which makes sense as Latin-1 and MacRoman
are almost just permutations of each other).

My general feeling is that if you already have a process which works
to detect the differences between MacRoman and Latin-1, then it is
likely largely equivalent to any other means which exists (the
accepted answer here
<https://stackoverflow.com/questions/4198804/how-to-reliably-guess-the-encoding-between-macroman-cp1252-latin1-utf-8-and>
sounds like it pretty much sums up the situation!) so beyond fixing
the bug(s) you found recently, you might find that there is nothing
more you can do.

And we arrive at the same place! Our review of our code, which failed to
handle a particular MacRoman detection, and comparing to other encoding
guessing algorithms, turned up a couple issues - all fixable in our
code, and only one was a encoding guessing issue.

In our guessEncoding routine, there was a misspelled variable that was
preventing the detection of MacRoman from line ending comparisons from
working properly. I'm not sure how this got past our QA, but - as you
know - sometimes things do and it did. With that fixed, we getting
accurate detection of C1252, MacRoman, ASCII, UTF8, UTF16 BE/LE, and
UTF32 BE/LE on our suite of about 30 different test files.

We also ran into an edge case of Mac cr (ASCII 13) line ending in UTF8
or UTF16 file needed an adjustment to convert the line ending to linefeeds.

So at this point our code is detecting the encoding for and reading text
files into LC with a pretty high rate of accuracy.

For anyone else needed such code, I will try to pulling into a single
library and somehow make it available. All I will ask is that if anyone
does us it and improved upon it to share the improvement back.

Re: Guessing the encoding of a test file...

2020-03-21 Thread Paul Dupuis via use-livecode

Nope.

The reason I refer to the routine as "guessEncoding" is that I
absolutely know that it is a "guess" based on the presence of nulls and
other bytes for UTF files and by statistical sampling for various
characters for MacRoman vs CP1252. We also offer a optional way for the
user to pick the encoding IF THEY KNOW IT (or I suppose they can keep
guessing until they get it right),

I'll say it again, I was looking to see if ANY one else had implemented
a guessEncoding routine and was willing to share of license for
comparison to my own in hopes of either concluding mine is the best it
can be OR learning something someone else is doing that improves it a
little bit.

So far the only person who has read my post and replied with what I was

comparing any other giessEncoding routines to our current one to see if we can
do better that we current are.To Mark,As always, thank for reading and
responding Mark. We're actually doing what you suggest. We had a set of QA test
cases (text files in many different line endings and encodings), some intended
to fail (such as Windows Code Page's we don't support). We're expanding these
and doing a review on macOS and Windows with our app. Ones that fail, that we
think shouldn't fail, we will step through the code to see why they fail and if
our algorithm can be further enhanced. I can's foresee any algorithm tweaks we
can't code ourselves that we'd need LC or USE-LIST assistance for.Back around
LiveCode 7, Fraiser said, in response to some correspondence I had with him,
that he would consider creating a "guessEncoding" to go along with the Unicode
Everywhere work and the new textEncode/textDecode functions. I do understand
the reluctance, as a business, to do so, as inevitably there will be some
instances where it guesses wrong. Other than LC adding a guessEncoding function
using some open source library, I would say the area where LC could be the most
help would be with this enhancement
https://quality.livecode.com/show_bug.cgi?id=22391I am under the, perhaps
false, impression that isoToMac and macToIso are sort of viewed as functions
that may become deprecated and no longer updated in the future. However, they
are still essential for us until I can textDecode(someData,"MacRoman") on a
Windows system and vice
versa.___use-livecode mailing

But does livecode support that character?

RE: Guessing the encoding of a test file... [OT]

2020-03-20 Thread Ralph DiMola via use-livecode
It was essentially Baudot on the way in(some special char diffs) then
shifted to numeric on the way out. As I remember the shifted numeric was not
any of the existing Baudot variants. Alpha Stock symbols in and numeric
stock quotes out. If I remember correctly the first 2 chars selected a head
on a magnetic drum and then waited for the last chars match on that head.
Every user just had a new card plugged in. Reponses time was not user
dependent. 1 user or 1k users. A query just had to wait for rotational
latency.

From a guessEncoding perspective, you just scan the bytes and if all
byte values are in the 0-31 range, you have a 5-bit code.

Then it get harder to determine whether it is Quotron or Baudot...

That will be a start, but it’s not done until you include Baudot.

Morse, however, is optional . . .
