Just a point of clarification, but open-source and free software are quite different concepts, as the people of FSF (the authors of the GPL and GNU) have taken great pains to point out (please see FSF web-site: <http://www.fsf.org/>), and, in any case, neither is necessarily ``free'' in the sense many on this list seem to assume. As the adage of the FSF says: ``Free software is a matter of liberty not price. You should think of "free" as in "free speech".''
