On OS X I sometimes open files from the command line using this syntax:
open -a tText filename.txt
When I do this with tText, it opens the file and then replaces the text in the
file with whatever is in my clipboard.

That is what it is supposed to do. Turn off the option in tText prefs.

Thanks! I didn't know it was a feature.
Would be great if it only edited the clipboard if I didn't explicitly tell it
which file I wanted edited.
