oh, also, CTRL-D just beeps. I have to run "logout" to close the Putty
session cleanly.

I am on Karaf 4.1.1 and accessing the console from Putty (basic config) the
tab completion completely messes up the screen.
if I run bin/client.bat, everything looks perfect.
any ideas?

Not sure it's related but we did some fixes around the shell.

OK, I thought you directly use putty to connect to Karaf.
Let me try to reproduce on a fresh Karaf. I remember some users reported issue
with shell/ssh on Windows.
