I read: ...crf is x264 option.
So when you compile ffmpeg must add:
./configure --enable-libx264
...and naturally installing x264.

Thanks for your help. I looked into /etc/ld.so.conf and the line you suggested
to be added was already in. But, your input reminded me that I didn't reboot
the server. I did so and recording files is now produced in both avi and flv.
That is a really good step forward. Thanks.

The log say:

Try this:
gedit /etc/ld.so.conf
...and add this line:
/usr/local/lib
...now reload config:
/sbin/ldconfig
Mabe need reboot machine if not...
