Hello, I agree, that would be a nice idea.
I used to test my velocity with unit tests and created some framework code similar to this approach (https://wiki.apache.org/velocity/TestingVelocity), but more modern (not extending TestCase and so on). I had in mind to create a JUnit Rule for ist... but never found the time to implement it. We even included code to set it up using our own directives, toolbox.xml and so on.
