I have run DSE and Apache Cassandra in the same cluster while migrating to DSE. The versions of Cassandra were the same. It was relatively brief -- just during the upgrade process -- but they run just fine together. My experience was in the Cassandra 1.1 and 2.0 time frame, but I would expect it to be similar now.
