I looked at it, briefly, and saw no signs that they really understand why
people use those silos. I don't understand much myself, but I understand a
little, I believe the developers at those silos understand a great deal
more, and anyone going up against them should match their understanding.

COI is IMAP based and a Dovecot based implementation is being developped.
There are more IMAP user than WhatsApp + Facebook-Messenger users world wide.
