\line
Hi Everyone,\line
\line
\line
some time ago we evaluated the snapshot features from Cloudstack for the
combination Ceph + KVM + Cloudstack and found some space for improvements.\line
Our goal is to provide snapshot backup for our customers which is easy to
handle over the Cloudstack API and provides incremental/differential
features.\line
\line
We recognised that Cloudstack uses qemu-convert to extract the data from the
raw device.\line
This means that every time a backup gets triggered 100 % of the used data gets
transferred to the secondary storage and not just the delta.\line
For big volumes (500GB to TB volumes) which are highly used, the backup process
can last very long and uses much space on the secondary side.\line
>From our side it would be nice to have a differential and/or incremental
>backup feature for our Ceph volumes.\line
\line
So we took a look around and found this as a possible solution:
https://smex12-5-en-ctp.trendmicro.com:443/wis/clicktime/v1/query?url=http%3a%2f%2fwww.backy2.com=7432fd1e-8f5e-46b9-baa4-273ddd62e3c4=b99d0007cfff65e3b95b9dd26b369f7ce0a2b6f1-a893b29523305f5294e5c68afec4a2a6cb35626a
This is a python tool which can do differential backups from Ceph snapshots
and store them on a filesystem or in an S3 Storage.\line
Sadly there is no REST API for this tool which makes the management of it a
little bit inconvenient.\line
We were wondering if this tool, some parts of its functionality or the main
approach of it could be integrated into Cloudstack to improve the snapshot
functionality.\line
\line
I checked the Github issues and did not find any similar tickets for that.\line
So maybe here are more people who needs this functionality or have already some
solutions for this.\line

Hi everyone,

As you may know, the role of VP of CloudStack (Chair of the CloudStack PMC) has
a one-year term. My term has now come and gone.

I’m happy to announce that the CloudStack PMC has elected Paul Angus as our new
VP of CloudStack.

As many already know, Paul has been an active member of the CloudStack
Community for over six years now. I’ve worked with Paul on and off throughout
much of that time and I believe he’ll be a great fit for this role.

Please join me in welcoming Paul as the new VP of Apache CloudStack!

Thanks,
Mike

support it by giving talks.
We really enjoyed the time in Montreal.

Hey Marco,
Yes, they run a very successful conference every year. I have just got back
from Montreal, and I talked with people there regarding the conference.

Now, for all CloudStackers (users and devs); I will repeat what I said in
Montreal. The TDC conference will happen with or without us. Therefore, we
only need to decide if we will join them in their Cloud tracks. We did not
hear much feedback here, but I will try again.

If you are part of the CloudStack community (as a contributor, committer,
user, operator, and so on), please do provide your feedback. Would you like
to see a CloudStack Collab Conference in Florianopolis, Brazil, 2019? I am
only asking you guys, what you think. I do understand the logistics
problems for some folks to attend a conference this far.

Now, about the city; the island has an airport (airport code = FLN).
However, most flights to FLN will have a connection either on GRU (Sao
Paulo airport) or GIG (Rio de Janeiro airport); KLM, AA, Delta, AirFrance,
Tap, and others have flights to FLN. I have also found some useful links in
English that can be used by your guys to check the city. In this link [1]
you can information not only about the city, but the State as well; there
are pages in different languages such as English, Spanish, and German (to
change the language there is a button in the top-right corner). On these
other links [2-3], you can find a guide (English only) of the city; it
contains a brief overview and some details about Museums, Beaches, events
and so on.

I would also be happy to answer any other question that you might have.

There is one thing that escape my memory. There is a security release about
to come for 4.9.3.0. However, other issues/improvements/bug fixes that are
on 4.11 will not go into 4.9.3.0.

AW: Free capacity calculation within ACS

2017-09-27 Thread Jochim, Ingo
It's not about deleted VM's. It's about VM's in shutdown mode.
We do have customers which keep some demo or testing machines in off mode over
a long period.
Off machines will not free up capacity. In the end I cannot build new machines
even if there is enough space on the hypervisors.

What do you see in the table vm_instance for the VMs you were expecting a
release? Do they stay in Destroyed state only and are not moving to "Expunging"
state? What do you see in the logs related to the thread named
"UserVm-Scavenger". This is the one which should do the VM cleanup. What do you
have in the logs related to CapacityManagerImpl class?

Kind regards,

Hi Ingo,

You might want to look at the release period set in your installation:
host.reservation.release.period. This release window time is there to keep the
capacity of stopped machines on a host for a certain time, before releasing it,
in case the machine has to start again soon after. And most likely for other
reason maybe in the advance networking mode. So try to decrease this time
window and check your capacity after that.

2017-09-05 Thread Jochim, Ingo
Hello Swen,

so you mean changing/removing the host tag for the unused machines?
That might be a good idea since with our workaround with offering zero we have
to remember the original size.

I thought there might be a parameter (ideally global settings or so) to change
the behavior of the capacity calculation.

Thanks.

Hi, so looking at this the UI itself is bitcloud which allows the user to
create vms which you trigger building via ansible?
is this bitcloud code custom or open source and useable ?

Hello René,

the UI you can see at this slide is our customer portal and is using ansible
for any action. For listing information of VMs, storage, network and so on we
are using the CloudStack API directly. All "write" actions like creating VM's
and so will go through ansible.
So we are able to run complex scenarios in a single step. It just depends on
the playbooks.

Hello Mauricio,

we are using ansible for instance and application orchestration in one workflow.
Since this is all command line we created a portal as a user interface for the
customer.
Some more details about ansible and the setup you'll find in the slides of my
colleague Sebastian at CCC in Miami.

Dear all,

we are rethinking our strategy on delivering services.
As we used our own framework, containing a lot of scripts, it is getting harder
and harder to keep track with all requirements, billing and visibility.

I'm just wondering if or what orchestration do you guys use to manage your
tenants for including delivery of instances and installing specific (mostly
Windows) apps on it.
We are looking for a self-service store with multi-tier tenants.

Do you wrote everything up in our own? Or did you decide to separate Instance
orchestration from application orchestration?

AW: CloudStack related changes in Ansible 2.3

Betreff: CloudStack related changes in Ansible 2.3

Hi CloudStack users

Ansible 2.3 is about to be released, I would like to summarize the
CloudStack related features and changes in this release.

New modules
---

- cs_host
- cs_nic
- cs_region
- cs_role
- cs_vpc

Examples and usage for these modules can be found in the docs,
http://docs.ansible.com/ansible/list_of_cloud_modules.html#cloudstack as
usual.

Docs

The CloudStack guide
http://docs.ansible.com/ansible/guide_cloudstack.html has been updated,
note the new feature "Environment Variables"
http://docs.ansible.com/ansible/guide_cloudstack.html#environment-variables

VPC
---

The VPC support has been improved in the related modules, but there is
still some work to do.

Integration tests
-

Soon, CloudStack related new Ansible PRs will be automatically tested
(~1.000 tasks) on a CI against a CloudStack Simulator running 4.9.x.

Future Module Development
-

Due some other side projects of mine (writing books takes more time than
one would might think), development of new modules is lagging a bit. One
module (cs_serviceoffer) is currently WIP
https://github.com/ansible/ansible/pull/19041.

But no worries, new modules are planed:
- cs_diskoffer
- modules for VPN setup

Cloud Role
--

At SWISS TXT, we created a Ansible role for setting up VMs in a
cloudstack cloud with advanced networking for different customer
projects, The role is open source (BSD) and can be found on GitHub
https://github.com/swisstxt/ansible-role-cloud-infra

Feel free to fork and improve it.

Goal of my Ansible CloudStack Project
-

I often get ask, why I am doing it.

My goal is to not only install and upgrade CloudStack by Ansible (that
is relatively easy... and can even be done without that much cloudstack
api interaction) but configure _and_ maintaining a cloud (basic or
advanced networking) in a reliable way!

It will install the OS and install cloudstack management server, install
the OS on the hosts, setup hypversisors, create zones, pods, clusters,
accounts, users, add configured hosts to cloudstack all this by a single
run and the best of it, you can re-run it safely again and again,
without fear breaking anything.

Have to add a new host? No problem, put the hardware in the rack and
connect it to the net, ansible will take care on the next run: it can be
that simple.

Also note, ansible can manage your network switches, routers and
firewalls too! http://docs.ansible.com/ansible/list_of_network_modules.html

The possibilities are endless...

Thanks
René

Over the past few months we have been working very hard with an events

expensive to stage here in Brasil so we were relying on a number of large

I appreciate that this is very late notice. Up until this week we were hoping
to have enough sponsorship to run the event but we were also conscious that
this would have left only a little time for CFP and people to make travel

We're working with local sponsors and our venue hosts to try and find some

usage server issue - cpu and ram size

2016-01-22 Thread Jochim, Ingo
Hi all,

there is an issue with usage records. To the running time of a VM the usage
server does not collect any information about the size of a machine.
The fields are empty. That means if you resize a machine a few times you will
know how long the machine was running but don't know how much you need to
charge because you don't know the size of the different periods.

Does anyone have a solution or workaround?
A bug report has been opened.

Thanks and regards,
Ingo

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CLOUDSTACK-9232

"The usage data is created without including the information of properties of
the usage object. For example if we want to bill a vm with usagetype 1 we only
see the time the vm was used. But we don't see in the usage data how many cpus,
etc. the vm had at the time the usage record was created. Thus we cannot bill
changes of the vm. For example if a customer adds a cpu core to his vm and
later removes it, this should be seen in the usage records. But as far as I
know the database records are all set to NULL and cloudmonkey does not return
these fields although they are availble in the API."

Hi,

Just a quick heads-up!
Someone on the CentOS ML reported his Windows 2008r2 VM on top of KVM+VirtIO PV
ended up unbootable after he installed the SUSE Network and Storage drivers
from the Optional Updates channel.
I've just checked now and it's the case, the system blue screens after reboot.
Will test 2012r2 shortly.

It'd be best if you don't install those updates/drivers for now, looks like
someone in Redmond didn't do his homework.

Nux,

I worked with the SUSE VMDP drivers (downloaded from SUSE) on Xen quite a lot
in the past.
Upgrading the drivers was always a nightmare and we ran into bluescreens very
often.
Since version 2 they also come with Virtio.

I don't know if those are the same drivers which come with Windows.
Any idea?

Ingo,

Yes, I use the same. But the drivers "SUSE Storage/Net" in Windows Optional
updates override them.
Verified on 2008r2 and 2012r2.
Luckily the damage is limited as they are in the Optional channel, not sure how
many people chose to install those alongside the Important ones, but hopefully
it won't be that many.

I also got fscked by an update Microsoft pushed for some Intel fake-raid the
other day.
You'd think a humongous, multi-billion dollar company has some resources to do
QA, especially on their "Enterprise" products.

I heard about discussions for secondary storage migration feature.
Is that something what comes in one of the next releases?

Hi all,

I'd like to list my VMs with the key and value pairs I specified through the
GUI.
Now I'm getting the key and the value as separate fields.
If I have more pairs I'm getting a separate area below the actual VM.

What is the best approach to list all the key value pairs for an object?

Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

if we delete a project, the name of the project is set to NULL in the database
and thus does not appear in the usage records.
But the display_text ist still available. This makes no sense imho.

We have no chance to display project names of deleted projects in a monthly
report for example.
Looks like a bug?

Try to edit DB and alter tags for Storage on Service Offerings for VR or any
system VM of your choice (i.e. create new Service Offering for VR, with all
smae parameters but with appropriate storate tags, and then compare DB entroes,
and edit original one...)

Also pay attention to local vs shared storage for systemVM - I had to play a
little bit with this to make it work...

BTW, there is also option to create new Service Offerings for VR/CPVM/SSVM
- and then instruct ACS to use there as default ones...

I have opened a bug on storage migration from NFS to Ceph.
Somehow the migration starts even if there is not enough free space on the

After failure there is no cleanup of the broken migration.

Hi,

It’d double check the HA worker table to see if there are any left-over HA
workers. Also, there could still be other jobs scheduled. If the API does not
return anything useful, you may have a look at the DB itself.

I wrote scripts to easily display HA workers [1] and jobs [2] which may help
you as well. You can also execute the queries yourself, see [3] and [4] to get
an idea.

I'm using the usagerecords to get usage of volumes. Unfortunately for most of

For those I have a usageid I can use this to the the volume (it's the same as
the volume id)

Why are there so many usageid's missing?

AW: AW: Storage Performance Windows VM

Thanks to all. Disk performance is much better now. I'm wondering why it's
different with Ceph.

Changing the template will affect new machines only.

Existing machines can get changed as well. But the edit button is visible if VM
is powered off.

Changing my existing machine to virtio ended in BSOD.
I'm doing a fresh install now.

Thanks again.

Marcus,

Since file on the old ACS is really RAW (template, created from snapshot, and
snapshot created from CEPH volume) - why didn't ACS convert it to qcow2? It has
named it x. qcow2 on secondary NFS.
...

I get folowing error in the new ACS, when I select RAW as the source format to
Upload volume:

Please specify a valid URL.
URL:/userdata/7a27330d-0080-444d-9807-3fa9bd3997c5.qcow2 is an invalid for the
format raw

So source image has QCOW2 extension, RAW format, and destination ACS doesnt
allow RAW format download if the extension is QCOW2... :(

So basically I'm unable to extract CEPH volumes at all and move them to another
ACS installation :(

the moment, we do workarround, we snapshots Windows DATA volume,
convert to template, and then we extract URL / download.

Then we use this URL to Upload Volume to ACS 4.5.1 - but it fails
almoust imiddiately with error inside SSVM (nothing usefull in
 management
log) - and the volume is deleted from ACS:

I see there is inspecting disk with file commands...any thought why
 is this failing ?

These are source Windows DATA disk btw:

AW: hostId: 25 is in avoid set, skipping this and trying other available hosts

2015-06-01 Thread Jochim, Ingo
Hi all,

I got the machines to work.
Here is my workaround:
- removed all disks from VM (exept root disk)
- power on VM (which worked now)
- hot attached the disks again
- rebooted machine

My disks show up as sdX now which was vdX before.
Something happened to the config after migrating the storage.

This was the important error message: Only 1 ide controller is supported

Many thanks to Andrija.

Regards,
Ingo

2015-05-30 Thread Jochim, Ingo
Hi Andrija,

there should be plenty of free CPU and RAM.
This VM was on a day ago. The only thing I did was migrating the disk from NFS
to Ceph storage.
The hosts are all up.
Is there anything I can check?

Regards,
Ingo

Hi all,

we are close to our capacity limit on the storage.
We noticed that deleting virtual disks within CS (4.2) never does free up space
on the storage side.
Same for disk migration.
We reduced the expunge time but nothing happens.
Is there procedure to trigger this and check the status/progress?

Thanks,

AW: Shared Storage for VMs

2014-12-14 Thread Jochim, Ingo
Hello Lee,

thanks for sharing your ideas.
In this scenario someone needs to administer the NAS and handle all requests,
right?

In the case you have a little VM which shares the storage then all traffic will
go through this VM and not directly to the storage.

Is there a standard to communicate to different storage systems for managing
volumes/shares?

Ingo

I have this requirement for some of the applications deployed in CS too

Workaround solution (of sorts) was to create a Shared Network attached to a
Physical VLAN then hook up a Physical NAS to the same VLAN.
The shared network is bound to a particular account / project so that it can't
be used by everyone

For me part of the attraction of using CS over OpenStack was that you could
craft the network in this way so that you an support applications / deployments
which have physical device requirements or haven't been developed to be 100%
cloudy.

I notice that OpenStack is looking into a shared volume system, I'd also like
the option of doing it 100% inside of CS if it was capable of doing so.

I do recall though that in XenServer ( ESX 4 I think) it wasn't possible to
attach a single volume to multiple machines without significant hacking of the
underlying Python - after which building things like an Oracle RAC / GRID
system or OCFS2 was possible but this is probably out of reach for most users.

Perhaps something like a Virtual NAS VM like the Virtual Routers etc. would be
sufficient - think OpenFiler but inside of CS?

Also Jose check ubuntu juju and MAAS , right now I m interesting with it.
I understood from my first reads , as a bare metal or virtual MAAS can
manage the whole resource environment (means cpu and ram and disk )
means on ACS you can create multiple VM and introduce it to MAAS and
then using juju , you can deploy wordpress , mysql , memcached and
with DNS integration ready to use environments could be , looks like
its possible but not sure need to install and deploy first to give you
better feedback but also you can take a look I understood Ubuntu is
become more important have a strong openstack and provisioning
background and also they are look like first IBM Power cpu supported
Linux dist. Without virtualization need to check out !

Hey Jose, you should check out OpenShift
http://www.openshift.org/documentation/ , its an open source PaaS
which you can run on top of any kind of infrastructure.
I work on Getup Cloud, we are an Brazilian PaaS running OpenShift and EC2.

Also Jose check ubuntu juju and MAAS , right now I m interesting
 with it.
I understood from my first reads , as a bare metal or virtual MAAS
can manage the whole resource environment (means cpu and ram and
disk ) means on ACS you can create multiple VM and introduce it to
MAAS and then using juju , you can deploy wordpress , mysql ,
memcached and with DNS integration ready to use environments could
be , looks like its possible but not sure need to install and
deploy first to give you better feedback but also you can take a

first IBM Power cpu supported Linux dist. Without virtualization need to

Subject: taking snapshots kills all machines

 Hi all,

on CS 4.2 we experience the issue that taking snapshots (disk
snapshots to secondary storage) cause heavily problems.
Once the network becomes busy (because of taking the snapshots) CS
starts to shutdown all the virtual machines.
I'm able to restart them again but if the copy job for the snapshot
goes on CS will shutdown them again.

After the snapshot it's all fine again.

Does anyone has the same issue and maybe a solution for it?

 Thanks and regards,
 Ingo

So the default load balancing happens on the vRouter by using HAPROXY.
You can configure load balancing rules to VMs but you cannot select the LB
specifically. If you have en external LB you want to use, you must create
another network offering specifying the external load balancer.

Yes, it will do health checks without an external LB. In the event one of the
servers is unavailable it will stop sending requests to it. You are able to
configure health checks once you create the LB policy.
