I think we can safely replace nvi with traditional vi [1]. vi supports UTF-8 and then we could use UTF-8 locale systemwide. nvi is old and unmaintained, but supports more configuration options, while vi is much simpler. Anyway, if you want a really powerful text editor it would be vim or

UTF-8 locale support

I wonder if anybody cares about locale support in DragonFly. It seems like libc, curses and utilities are UTF-8 ready, but it won't work out of the box. Everything in /bin and /sbin is compiled statically, but setlocale() fails in static binaries (Issue 1362). I understand that they can't be
