From what I can remember (I'm writing from smartphone), when the template
selector is open, the default type is the same of the file you were
editing, but in the combo box there are all other types, including a
specific "all" item at the top, if I'm not wrong.

the beginning question marks & other symbols throughout are
superfluous.
(2) the button at the end - containing more symbols - I as
I recently upgraded from LO 5.2x to 5.3x and notice that it no longer
remembers the last used template. It appears the behavior is now to default
to the type of document currently open, e.g.:
If I have a spreadsheet open, New->template only shows spreadsheet
