I tested using LibreOffice Base 5.1.3.2 from one of the Windows PCs, and
received the same error. So the problem doesn't have anything to do with
the mounting on my Debian system, anyway.

For multi-user access you need a database server. It is fairly easy to
convert your embedded HSQLDB into a server application.
