[libreoffice-users] Moving and copying table rows

2011-11-05 Thread Stuart Simon
Dear LibreOffice Community:
First of all, thank you so much for opening the gates to improve the
open-source office suite to far greater an extent than OpenOffice.org or
even Go-OO could ever do. Forgive me if I am posting in the wrong place,
but I believe that somebody will be able to finally solve a problem with
Writer that has persisted through all versions of OOo and LibreOffice until
now, and for just as long has been the default behavior on many word
processors, including Microsoft Word and AbiWord. The problem is basically
that table rows are not deleted when using the Edit -- Cut command, nor are
they added when clicking Edit -- Paste. I suggest that people read Mike
Freeman's original description of the problem, which is issue #35570 on the
bug tracker, and test it out on the scenario I have provided on the self
same bug report. Also check out related OOo bug #13645 on Apache.

Two workarounds and when they do not work:

   1. Select rows to cut using Table -- Select -- Rows, Edit -- Cut, place
cursor in position before place where you want to paste rows, Table --
Insert -- Rows, How many? Number of rows you have cut, select After, click
OK, select newly inserted rows using Table -- Select -- Rows, Edit --
Paste. This method does not work for people who are not good at counting,
especially double-counting rows split across pages.
   2. Place cursor after the last character in the last cell of the
rightmost column before the first row of data you want to paste, click
Table -- Split Table, place cursor after last character you want to cut,
select Split Table, select new paragraph containing newly split rows, Edit
-- Cut, place cursor after last character before paste position, click
Table -- Split Table, move cursor outside table at new split point, click
Edit -- Paste. This method will result in a table that is still split from
the main table on at least one side, and it will be very difficult (but not
impossible) to delete the paragraph breaks to rejoin the tables.

I have tried everything possible to make actual developers aware of this
issue. This message is my last resort. I hope that I can find somebody who
would be willing to create a patch for this.

Hi :)
It might be a good idea to post a bug-report against LO
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport
LibreOffice devs probably prioritise LO bugs and seem to be able to work more
effectively than in other projects. The Go-OO team are one of the core parts
of TDF.

Thanks very much for that suggestion, but that does not work either.

Surely it should?

[libreoffice-users] Unable to install LibreOffice 3.4.3

2011-11-05 Thread Maurice Helwig
I am unable to install LibreOffice version 3.4.3.

Below is the procedure I have taken to install 3.4.3 and the problems I have
encounted.

1. Download LibreOffice from www.libreoffice.org/download/
The file is called LibO_3.4.3_Win_x86_install_multi.exe
(this is the multilanguage installer for English)

2. When you double click the file it will expand the files in a folder
usually placed on the desktop. It is better not to change the position
of this folder.

3. At the end of the decompression, the install procedure starts with
Welcome to the guided LibreOffice 3.4 installation (words might be
slightly different, as I see the windows in Italian because I have an
Italian Windows system).

4. The next window asks to insert your name and organization.

5. The next window you can choose from Default and Customized install
 (I always choose Customized).

6. The next window allows me to choose the components: I install all
LibreOffice modules, while I choose inside Optional Components the
dictionaries and the extensions I want to install. I usually do not
install any of the Additional Languages.

7. The next window allows to set LibreOffice as the default application
for
MS Office files.

8. The next windows starts the installation procedure proper.

9. At the end, you can delete the folder on the desktop with the install
files, as they are not necessary.

Steps 1 and 2 accomplished without any problem.

Step 3 -- When I click on the .exe file I am offered a folder located on the
desktop
into which the .exe file will be expanded prior to the installation
proceeding.

I am also offered the opportunity to change that location and name of the
folder
if I want to.
This is where problems begin to happen --
~
If I change the location or folder name into which the .exe file expands --
then This is what happens --

At the end of the decompression, the install procedure starts with a very
quick
installation of
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x64 9.0.21022
and then immediately drops down to step 8 and proceeds to install
LibreOffice.

When the installation progress bar gets to the end, ie the installation is
finished,
then a window appears with the following information --

Error 1719
The window Installer service could not be
accessed. This can occur if the windows
Installer is not correctly installed. Contact
your Support personnel for assistance

The window disappears and there is no evidence of LibreOffice being
installed.
~~
If I accept the offered location into which the .exe file expands --

At the end of the decompression, the install procedure starts with a very
quick
installation of
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x64 9.0.21022

make all the selections I want
as described above, and the installation proceeds.

When the installation progress bar gets to the end, ie the installation is
finished,
then a window appears with the following information --

Error 1719
The window Installer service could not be
accessed. This can occur if the windows
Installer is not correctly installed. Contact

~~

I then went back and tried to install LibreOffice again, using the offered
folder location.

At the end of the decompression, the install of
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x64 9.0.21022
begins and then a window appears and tells me that LibreOffice installation
is suspended
and would I like to uninstall it.

I click yes and  Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x64 9.0.21022
is uninstalled
and then reinstalled.

Then steps 3 through 8 as before ending with the same Error message 1719 as
before.
~~
Ar this point I saw that I was going around in circles and achieving nothing
so I resorted
to a previous OS Image (I use Macrium Reflect on a monthly basis) to remove
all traces
of LibreOffice until the problems are fixed.

I have installed the Official LibreOffice Portable onto a memory stick and
it works
well, but slow, so I presume that the installer program is at fault.

I have Installed other programs on Windows 7 64bit Home premium without any
problems
so I am reluctant to suspect that the OS is at fault.

I do not know where to report this as a bug. (Two bugs in fact)

I have gone back to using OpenOffice version 3.3.0 until this problem can be
fixed.

Searching Google for error 1719 gives a lot of reading but no answers not
even from MS sites.

Can anyone help please.

I'm using LibreOffice 3.4.3 on Kubuntu 11.04.  Is there any way to create
an alias to an existing function in Calc?  I also use R regularly.  When
using Calc I'm continuously mistyping =mean() instead of =average() when
trying to enter a formula for the mean.  I would like to be able to create
an alias so that I can type mean() and it will use the average() function.

I would like to know that too. At least I know that this does NOT work:

Function MEAN(x As Variant) As Double
Dim a As Object
a=createUNOService(com.sun.star.sheet.FunctionAccess)
x=a.callFunction(AVERAGE,x)
End Function

Unfortunately I don't have much of a clue what to do about it, except
converting x to an array of the exact type that the function needs,
whatever that is. Maybe someone who understand English much better
than me can figure it out from the documentation.

[libreoffice-users] Get origin and unit of a page in Draw in a Basic macro

2011-11-05 Thread Regina Henschel

Hi all,

I want to set the center of arc, sector or segment with a dialog.
Currently you can set only the center of the shape but not the center of
the underlying ellipse in PositionSize. The value input should be
possible in the actual coordinate system of the page. Therefore I need
the unit and the origin of the coordinate system - that what is likely
done in the code with getPageOrigin and PagePosToLogic/LogicToPagePos.
Is there a way to get this informations using a Basic macro?

Kind regards

It might be possible to write a macro for MEAN, but the effort is huge.
To get a true alias you need to mimic the possibility to have up to 30
optional parameters where each parameter can be a cell range. It is much
easier to remember to use AVERAGE when you get a #NAME? error.

The effort is small in the code. But in that case you need to build your
own LibreOffice or convince the community that such an alias is useful
and has no side effects and find a developer.

[libreoffice-users] Fw: [MariaDB Announce] MariaDB in Athens, Greece -- 11-13 Nov 2011

2011-11-05 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
MariaDb is an excellent back-end for Base and we might be able to build up the
team that is working on Base by building up some sort of relationship with
them.

MariaDB is to MySql as
LibreOffice is to OpenOffice
except that MySql is still owned Oracle so the relationship is not particularly
friendly. It is developing faster than MySql was allowed to. It has almost
all the original MySql people including the original people that started MySql
in the first place. It is a drop-in replacement for MySql.

MariaDb is a good back-end for corporate or large organisations that need a
decent and hefty back-end. It's probably a lot heftier than small clubs or
individuals need for a little Contacts Mail-Merge List. The MySql connector
seems to work well with it.

Tom :)

Hi :)
I have not done it either but i have seen comments here from people that have
used MariaDb and/or MySql.

It would be great to get some MariaDb people in here to write-up how to use
MariaDb. They might need some help with using Base as a front-end although a
lot of them are very experienced with database apps and might only need a
gentle nudge or 2. If a few worked on stream-lining the Base code to work more
smoothly with their back-end then maybe Base could work with databases on hefty
websites. There is huge potential here.

2011-11-05 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
The documentation team do have a person or 2 trying to work on Base
documentation but it's slow going and tough work. Base is quite quirky with
apparently some problems being different in different releases. Even though
there have not been many commits to the code base there do seem to be a few
people working on the code, again it's tough work and not as fast paced or
glamorous as the other apps, such as Writer or Calc.

Also the Faq that is being translated from the excellent French one seems to
have a section waiting to be added about Base.

The various different people that work on different aspects of Base can't
really communicate with each other as there is no list dedicated to Base so
it's difficult to build-up any community spirit. However, the situation seems
a lot better than it did a few months ago although we still need to pull in a
lot more people that have experience and understanding of databases.

Regards from
Tom :)

2011-11-05 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
It's good to have a different answer or to stop people taking a wrong
direction.

Headers look very different in Calc from the way Writer or Draw handles them.
I can't see a way of gettign an image into their headers :(
Apols and regards from
Tom :)

[libreoffice-users] Re: Moving and copying table rows

2011-11-05 Thread stuartsimon
I know. One of my original points was that I was trying to get developers to
read and make changes to bug #
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35570 35570 , which describes a
situation that has existed for the history of LibreOffice and
OpenOffice.org. I should have been more succinct, I guess.

Hi :)
It might be a good idea to post a bug-report against LO
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport
LibreOffice devs probably prioritise LO bugs and seem to be able to work
more effectively than in other projects. The Go-OO team are one of the core
parts of TDF.

RE: [libreoffice-users] MS font exploit

2011-11-05 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton

There are two microsoft.com pages that relate to this situation. The problem
is that the exploit happens against the kernel (in GDI, etc.) so there is not
much to do about it in any applications.

The knowledge-base KB article is the most helpful in terms of mitigation.

Any application that handles its own TrueType font handling by other than the
Windows call that accomplish font handling and rendering need to look to see
if they have any vulnerability in their parser. This also applies to any
non-Windows support for TrueType fonts that run on the same architectures as
Windows. There's not enough public information to know what to look for. I
expect that there is cross-platform cooperation at the security-team levels on
this one.

Meanwhile, the only remedy at the moment is to apply the workarounds that
apply to Windows.

Here is what I can discern from the sketchy information:

 1. The exploit requires a specially-crafted TrueType Font package.
 2. The vulnerability is exploited when such a font is parsed as part of
rendering of any presentation using the Windows internal support TrueType
fonts.
 3. There is a fix available at the knowledge base article. It *appears* in
my non-expert reading to prevent use of the intrinsic support for embedded
fonts, since this a potentially-appealing avenue of attack via
specially-crafted documents. Fixes to close that door, and to reopen it
later, are available at the KB article.

I suspect that the workaround has no impact on LO and OO.o operability,
although I guess the thing to do is turn on the workaround and see for sure.

I'm going to do that as soon as I do some system backups first.

[libreoffice-users] Re: MS font exploit

2011-11-05 Thread Tom
Hi :)
That seems to list all the supported versions/distros of Windows but doesn't
included unsupported ones such as Win98. Does that mean Win98 is safe or
just that they don't bother to look to see if it's vulnerable?

Tbh my interest suddenly dropped away when i found that LO is safe even if
we read a doc file in it and creating doc files is still safe too in LO.
I'm a little worried about the works machines especially after the work i
have put in these last 2 weeks but if they suffer because of using MS Office
then it might encourage them to move to LO and that would be fine by me.
The problem would be if the machines got infected right after me working on
updating everything and installing weird stuff such as LO.

If LO prevents the machine itself getting infected that is one good thing
but if it inadvertently passes infections on then the wrong people, ie LO
users, might start getting the blame for something that is not their/our
fault. Of course they/we would also be passing it on if we were using MS
Office but at least we would have had more warning about it as our machines
got infected. Hmmm, this whole lack of security in MS products really
creates a lot of weird blame issues.

Tom :)

[ snipped description of problem ]

I have tried everything possible to make actual developers aware of this
issue. This message is my last resort.
I hope that I can find somebody who would be willing to create a patch for this.

Submitting a bug, as Tom wrote, is a first step.
That however does not mean that developers are automatically interested
in this. I guess it is not at all a trivial thing to add. Already the
energy that is needed to discuss the right solution from UX pov... So it
would be my expectation that developers get particularly interested when
there is someone (company..) interested in sponsoring the development.
That is the freedom that this software brings us: when we are not able
to add somthing our selves, we can always find others that have the time
to do so.
I don't write this to discourage you. It is more about expectations and
reality. Of course it is well possible to help, once someone shows
interest, with designing details, testing etc. And also, in the
LibreOffice community, the possibility for relatively new developers to
get started, to send in patches, to find guidance etc. is really great.

I hope this makes both sense and things a bit more clear.

Windows 98 is vulnerable.

Windows 98 is not supported by MS any longer, and there are literally
thousands of unpatched known exploits for that OS. Windows 98 should
only be used in non-networked single-purpose applications now, and
furthermore an exit plan should be devised for all systems still
running 98.

If you are still using Windows 98 then this new vulnerability is the
least of your security concerns.

2011-11-05 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I don't have any Win98 machines to worry about luckily but i know a couple of
people that keep installing it for their clients.

I tend to find lighter-weight GnuLinux distros are more up-to-date with
drivers and stuff. Wine makes it possible to run most apps designed for
Windows although it can take a bit of work sometimes. Luckily i am mostly able
to avoid such old machines.

The info is good to know tho so thanks for that :)

I am never completely confident about Windows forums but there seem to be quite

My gut feeling was to update the OS from the microsoft.com website and make

I am unable to install LibreOffice
 version 3.4.3.

Below is the procedure I have taken to install 3.4.3 and
 the problems I have
 encounted.

 1.   Download LibreOffice from
 www.libreoffice.org/download/
 The file is called LibO_3.4.3_Win_x86_install_multi.exe
(this is the multilanguage installer for English)

 2.   When you double click the file it will
expand the files in a folder
usually placed on the desktop. It is better not to change
 the position
 of this folder.

 3.   At the end of the decompression, the
 install procedure starts with
Welcome to the guided LibreOffice 3.4 installation (words
 might be
slightly different, as I see the windows in Italian because
 I have an
 Italian Windows system).

 4.   The next window asks to insert your
 name and organization.

 5.   The next window you can choose from
 Default and Customized install
  (I always choose Customized).

 6.   The next window allows me to choose the
 components: I install all
LibreOffice modules, while I choose inside Optional
 Components the
dictionaries and the extensions I want to install. I
 usually do not
install any of the Additional Languages.

 7.   The next window allows to set
 LibreOffice as the default application
 for
 MS Office files.

 8.   The next windows starts the
 installation procedure proper.

 9.   At the end, you can delete the folder
on the desktop with the install
files, as they are not necessary.

Steps 1 and 2 accomplished without any problem.

Step 3 -- When I click on the .exe file I am offered a
 folder located on the
 desktop
into which the .exe file will be expanded prior to the
 installation
 proceeding.

I am also offered the opportunity to change that location
 and name of the
 folder
 if I want to.
This is where problems begin to happen --

While it's a good idea to do a full parallel install, it's not necessary
in this case. The OP has LO 3.3 from his package manager, so all that he
actually needs to do is download the .deb packages, extract, install,
and before starting LO, modify the bootstraprc script to reflect a
different profile location. This is what I use for 3.4:

$ cat /opt/libreoffice3.4/program/bootstraprc
[Bootstrap]
BaseInstallation=${OOO_BASE_DIR}
InstallMode=installmode
ProductKey=LibreOffice 3.4
UserInstallation=$SYSUSERCONFIG/.libreoffice3.4/3
[ErrorReport]
ErrorReportPort=80
ErrorReportServer=

$ gksu gedit /opt/libreoffice3.4/program/bootstraprc
will do the job if on GNOME, kdsdudo whatever KDE uses in place of
gedit will do the same.

Note that I've modified the profile location to '/.libreoffice3.4/3'.
That way the 3.4 profile won't interfere with the Ubuntu default of
'/.libreoffice/3'. I use 3.4 as I also have other LO versions
installed in /opt (3.3 etc).

[libreoffice-users] name-define-edit causes crash in LO Calc v3.4.3

2011-11-05 Thread David S. Crampton

Context: in Calc of LO v3.4.3 on Windows XP Pro. I

I record my checkbook into Calc. Four columns are, Check #, Debit$,
Credit$, Balance.

Each month adds about 40 rows (checks and other transactions) to the
columns. At the end of each month some of the transactions have not yet
cleared the into my bank statement.

I have a named range, outstanding checks, which spans these uncleared
items. There are, say, 10 items in this range.

In October, for example, outstanding checks is $A1:$D9. At the end of
November I want to redefine outstanding checks to be, say, $A31:$D40.

The named range outstanding checks is used in links in other related
spreadsheet files. It is necessary to have this name remain constant.

What fails:

Insert | Names | Define: brings up Define Names dialog;
Initially, in the Define Names dialog, Scope=Global, Name=empty, Listbox
contains my outstanding checks, Assigned To is greyed out.

Click on outstanding checks in the listbox;
Assigned To becomes active and shows the currently defined $A1:$D9.
Observe that the button Add becomes relabeled to Modify.

Ignoring, in this first case, the Modify button:
Click into the Assigned To box.
Type in the edits to rewrite $A1:$D9 to $A31:$D40.
Click button OK.
LO Calc crashes. Every time.

Upon restart LO Calc does file recovery. Recovery is successful. Range is
still defined as the original $A1:$D9.

Alternate GUI method:
Click Modify button to initiate the same edit.
Same crash behavior.

Other info:
OOo v3.3.0 (the last version I used prior to LO) performs this op
successfully; that is, the manually typed redefinition is accepted and
behaves properly.

Workaround:
Create a newly named defined range each month. For example, outstanding
checks October; outstanding checks November, etc. However...

The named range is used in other Calc sheets files to report on each
month. The linkages in those target files must be similarly edited. Pain!

I did an amateur's search of Bugzilla prior to writing this. Hundreds of
define results but not on this AFAIK. If no clues come from Users forum
I will post as new bug.

Re: [libreoffice-users] testing out 2 new large word list English dictionaries.

2011-11-05 Thread webmaster for Kracked Press Productions
I have been offline, think near hospital stay illness, since just
after I posted this list. So I have gotten back to answering the
replies. Thanks for Tom to give the help/hint on installing the file to
Windows.

The .zip issue was due to the Extension Center for LO and a Mime-type
error with the file storage. So my original one I had in the test
version of the center was redone as an externally hosted file till
that issue is resolved. The links I used for the initial post came
directly from a dictionary list on my domain,
http://libreoffice-na.us/English-3.4-installs/dictionary.html not the
LO Extension Center.

fewer words
I opened the word lists with each word on a separate line, like needed.
Then I did a line count with a text editor. I had to have a proper
count for the words, for the system to use the file[s] correctly.
Unlike some lists that use controls at the end of words helping with
suffix word forms, the lists I use does not have them. The suffix
control version my take less space but would take more processing power
to do the adding of the suffixes, plurals, possessive forms, etc., over
that of a straight list that include all the word forms. I used the
counts from the package to give the actual number of spellings in the
list[s] as my number of words. The largest of the American lists is
638,644 words and for British 638,285 words. I could give you the word
counts for all the lists I have, including the one for 217K words, but
it is not needed, or is it? Last time I did a dictionary spelling
project at a college, the total number of words was over 177K. It used
the suffix control method to fit as many words in the rom memory
chips as possible. Actually that was when IBM Compatible desktop
computers were in the 286 CPU stage. Now there are over 600K word lists.

The issue of actual fewer words could be there are words that are not
included based upon if that spelling is used in American English or
British English.

I have seen some words that are spelled a way or two that I did not
expect, but are proper according to the sources I have.

I did not create the lists from scratch. They are from a source I trust.

The real thing I am looking for help with is what you, the users, would
like to have for an English spelling dictionary. I could test them out
hours, days, weeks, months, etc., but it would be with my use and
needs. I want others to decide if it is useful for THEM.

I choose the 217K word list version as a starting ground. I may, for my
personal use, go back down to the 98K size word list version. I would
like to know what you think?

Would you prefer the 50K, 98K, 217K, or larger word list for an English
spelling dictionary for LibreOffice. If I could unlock the default one,
I would for my testings. As far as I remember, the included default
English en_US or en_GB had about 50K words in its US and GB word lists.
I could actually check if needed.

So please let me know what you think. What size of word lists would you
like?

I have been talking to Tom on and off about a larger word count
dictionary for LO/OOo for some months. I just decided it was time to
get my feet wet again.

The funny thing I saw in an older word list, once, was one that did
not have the word dictionary in it at all.

If I still could remember my basic C programming, I would write a
program comparing the different word lists to see which words are not
common, but after 3 strokes I have not programmed such a package in many
years. Actually a few months after the last stroke.
