Thanks, Andreas. I took a quick look and it could be a help, but I
discovered that Scrivener, where I now do my writing, has a good
outliner. I'm just not familiar with its features.

This particular change from F4 to Ctrl-Shift_F4 for data source in Calc but not
in Writer is a massive problem. The F4 shortcut has been around for YEARS.

I now have to re-write my tutorials and workshop examples.
I now have to go back to the hundreds of users that have been using F4 for
YEARS and try to explain why there is a difference between Calc & Writer.

A large number of the people (I have trained ) that use LibreOffice use F4 for
mail merge in Writer and Pivot Tables in Calc.
Because the usual source is a MySQL database where data is being updated on a
regular basis, the mail merge and pivot tables need updating regularly.

Why was this change made?
As far as I can see (from the bugzilla history) it was requested in 2013
because 1 or 2 people, that are changing from Lotus 123 to Calc could not make
the change from F4 to Shift-F4 for the "Absolute cell reference shortcut".

I don't remember any of "my" users having ever found it necessary to change the
cell reference from absolute to relative once they have formatted a cell.

So I agree with James Lang & Alexander Thurgood when they decry this change.
Who made the change 2 years after it was requested, without discussing it with
the people on this list?

Developers, please do NOT make changes to existing menu options and shortcuts
without FULLY consulting the "professional" users of LibreOffice.
Thank you.

So you are saying it's not a fact but it's nevertheless true? There

(And there's no "later" involved: the sole protocol mentioned was POP3.)

POP3 has RETR to retrieve a message and *separately and optionally*

them - so there is no "later" about it.

If you see above, you will see that the claim was about the protocol,

Again, the point was not about advisability of using POP.

In the early days of use of the POP protocol, server space would have
been at a premium and no doubt common and necessary practice was for
clients to be configured to delete server copies of messages when
they were downloaded. But that doesn't mean that "POP3 ... downloads
... without leaving a copy on the server."

Tom,
That was it!
Thank you!!
For all those interested, when I changed the Style Setting Box
from Text Body to Default Style, then it changed the spacing to single spacing.

I'm interested, but puzzled. Surely that could not have been the
solution if the problem was as described?

o Text Body paragraph style has Single spacing by default - though
you (or someone else) could well have changed this to Double: no problem.

o But in any case, the two techniques you described as not working
both apply local formatting, and applying local single spacing to
paragraphs with double spacing in their paragraph style *will*
overrule the style and change the spacing. So the techniques that
you say failed you would have worked (even though not an ideal solution).

I'm delighted that you are happy, of course - but it would be nice
to know what was *really* happening.

My Text Body style as default has spacing below the paragraph. The
Default style does not.

Interesting - but that would still affect the appearance only if the
original questioner's "lines of text in all paragraphs" were actually
separate paragraphs (as I suggested), wouldn't it?

Yes, the POP3 protocol was later amended to provide for optional
capabilities like leaving messages on the server, and most clients have
such options, but this is error-prone, and some servers do not honor
what you tell them (ie, gmail)...

I have many times seen servers/clients 'forget' what messages they have
already downloaded, and someone will start downloading the last 5 years
of their emails all over again...

[libreoffice-users] Outlining

2015-10-19 Thread James Wilde

Using v.5.0.0.5 on OSX 10.9

Somehow I'm just not getting this about outlines. People talk about
using the navigator but how? The navigator just sits there with a list
of things beginning with Headings, Tables, etc. Where is the button you
click on to indent the currently marked item - or alternatively outdent
it, of course.

Basically what I am looking for is something where each bit of text I
type (until the next carriage return) is a body of text which I can drag
around as I need. I don't want to have to mark the text and then do
Cmd+x and put it down with Cmd+v or drag it after marking it.

I don't need differential numbering depending on the degree of
indentation, 1, A, i, a and so on. Simple bullets will do fine. Then I
can grab a bullet and move the whole text bit to another place.

I think this functionality, which everyone says is to be found, is not
too well documented.

As Ctrl-Shift-F4 is pre-assigned to switching between open windows in a

[libreoffice-users] Empty spaces in master documents...

2015-10-19 Thread Wiebe van der Worp

Hi everyone

For some manuals I use master documents with satellites in Writer.

After opening such a file it always contains empty spaces and even empty
pages. It took a while to figure out how to get rid of these layout errors.

What I do:
 * Open document
 * Update index
 * Update selection for every satellite (using navigator)
 * Update index again
 * Export to PDF for printing and distribution

To get an idea I've temporary placed the following screen dumps on
http://media.vanderworp.org/.dot/.lo/:

1_lo_after_open.png
2_lo_after_update_index.png
3_lo_after_update_selection.png

This solution is highly complex and unfriendly (some of these masters
contain a lot satellites), I consider not properly calculating the
layout a bug.

The documents themselves have strict style rules and only contain
bitmaps and svg's.

I can live with this solution but... Are there better solutions?

This topic looks like this in any mail client utilizing the In-Reply-To
header for threading. I think it would look the same if I would store
the mails in my inbox and watch it with some other mail client.

More than 10% of this mailing list is about the list itself. Apart from
this topic, notice the recent topic "Please do not send me a reply. My
question was solved already. I ask you sincerely." End users are not
interested in being mebers of a software fan club.

Contrary to the users of the 90ies, today's computer users do not
understand message boards nor mailing list just like they do not
understand office suites or anything that wants to be configured.
