Hi,
I have a problem when inserting text automatically from OpenOffice-Basic
Macros which are invoked by function keys using
the function TextCursor.insertDocumentFromURL. When I save and reload
the .odt file, some of the formatting instructions
are gone. So text which has been bold is now
Keep It Simple; forget those computerized macros, et.al. ...
just highlight - copy - paste - works for me whenever,
wherever ;-)
An added benefit, no memorizing all those shortcuts ;-)
Oh my, I'm off on yet another tangent ...

I'd like to get some general opinions about paragraph styles.
I am a retired lawyer who led a local government law office. When I was

Just in case you folks are unaware, BSA connotes Boy Scouts of America
to most people in the US.
ah, never thought of this ;) In our case it's Bug Submission Assistant -
maybe should have spelled it out :)

have been using LO since OO - and enjoyed/enjoy it;
I don't know what help I could be in developing,

Sounds as if you're referring to an outline;
one composes his thoughts in an outline then writes the main
paragraph then the concluding paragraphs -

or expands on each for prose writing -

I'll admit to not using styles, but not so much because I don't want
to. I've been using the various word processing programs since PCs were
first produced, before the concept of styles. They came out shortly
after, of course, but they got little or no attention in the limited

Great responses so far from everyone!
Dan, I like your idea of giving the students a project of doing a complex

Greetings Mark,
I am puzzled at what you posted in reply to my original message...
I was talking about a desktop database as the front-end in a Client/Server

It appears your question was with using spreadsheets as a database table.
Did I not understand something that was

Where styles will really shine is to give the students a project of
doing a complex document with and without styles and then ask them to
change certain aspects to attain some consistent characteristic. Change
all headings to XXX, indentation and font on all paragraphs to yyy,

Copying the currency-formatted cell to another cell copied both the value

I'm running Xubuntu 12.04, LO 4.0.2.2.
The pasted cell has the right format, but when I entered a 0 (zero) in
the old cell (that was cut), it shows as 0, not $0.00, and the format
shows as Numbers instead of Currency.
It happened over and over, even after I did several row cell re-formattings.
Not clear if you are concerned with formatting of the source cell (which
would be cleared bya Ctrl+X) or with the formatting of the pasted cell
which with Ctrl+V will paste formatting with default settings but could be
set other than default.
Suspect all is functioning as designed. Please see
I can confirm that CTL+X removes the character and number formatting in
LO 3.6 on opensuse.

Just ran across it recently. I've skimmed the whole thing but haven't

find some time soon to devote to it.

Dave and Doug,
I appreciate, Dave, hearing your perspective as a true end user. Your
sentiments are those I've heard from my employees. They just need to get a
brief done and filed, and they don't have time to learn the styles.
Doug, obviously, nobody's trying to force styles on anyone. What
