No bug, the Styles and Formatting dialog window was removed for the 4.4
release.

It is now only present as a Content panel in the Sidebar Deck. The F11 key,
or Styles Formatting button, will open the content panel in the Sidebar.

Sidebar opens by default to the Properties panel, but should toggle to the
Styles and Formatting panel when accelerator or the toolbar button is used.

With any module opened--Writer for example-- from the Main menu, check
enable the View -- Sidebar feature.

Default docked position will be on the left side of frame.

The Styles and Formatting Content panel is the second Tab button under
Properties.

The Sidebar can be undocked from the right side and float. Or it can be
docked left side.

If you are not seeing the Styles and Formatting content panel in the Sidebar
that would be a real problem suggesting configuration errors needing a clean
user profile, and maybe another round of installation.

So, make sure the Sidebar feature is checked active. Also, that it is not
collapsed onto the right margin (unchecking and checking from the View menu
should open it).

Post back if having done that you do not see the Sidebar with the Styles and
Properties panel.

[libreoffice-users] Re: database2spreadsheet

Hi Andreas,

In a future step, I would like to integrate graphics into the
spreadsheet which could be created by a perl script with gnuplot from
data in the database; the images could reside in a directory and rows in
the database would have a field referring to the file name of the image.

Because all this has been implemented already to be used by anyone
 without coding.
Hit F4 and drag your query into your favourite spreadsheet template.
Add spreadsheet formulas, (conditional) formatting, charts and stuff.
Finally, you may remove the store data flag from the import range so
the user is prompted to update the import range when opening this
document. All this works reliably out of the box.

Including the image link from the Gnuplot trace that the original poster
requested ? I think not, at least not without some other form of
programming magic to convert the filename to a URL and then insert it in
the sheet.

The GUI only solution you propose only works within the metes and bounds
of what the GUI can offer without programming. My understanding of the
original poster's question was that he was already considering a
programmable solution, at least for the images.

If you need programming within LO to get where you want, and you're
already using Perl for some of what you need, you might as well go to
whole hog, and do it all in Perl (or Python, or some other language that
lets you manipulate the document format).

I guess Andreas is right in all his observations. I'll never expected LO or
similars to be an top Databse development front end (although if it would
reach filemakers level would be nice). What I expect, as a non IT person, from
such kind of platform, is to help me out to delevelop relative simple to
medium simple personal and sometimes professional problems without having to
learn several programming languages to achive the same through web pages. I
have some friends which simply gave up building such DB just because it was to
cumberson to learn several different thinks to achieve one purpose only.

I thing every tool is a right tool if we keep their limitation in mind and I
think Base is in the absolute right direction. After starting to read the 4.4
manual, Tom pointed me out, I got over enthusiastic again, because I saw how
much progress the Base team has done (good work folks). I got so enthusiastic
that I started to translate it to my native language (as soon I reach some
chapter translated I'll make the drafts available).

I think that one of the major draw backs of Base and why people isn't using it
is the lack of up to date manuals. There more up to date literature and
information is available more people can understand power and limitations of
base and how to employ it. I know there are some tutorials around, but there
more there better so people can see what is possible to do with base. I know
the develop and documentation team might be small for this herculean work but
as I said before good job folks, the rest comes with time.

First, some numbers aren't paired with anything. What do they belong with?
thay are orfans, I,ve just did not remark it
Second, you refer to the values as an array but, given the organization of
the spreadsheet I don't see any arrays. What arrays are you referring to?
Cell addresses would be helpful to understand.
the array was ment as follow:
There are severall tools, which give their output sequentially in time.
The output creates an arrey, data are
 placed in rows and columns
Regarding your question about numbers of rows and columns I believe the
max number of rows is 1,000,000 and max columns is 1024.
 thank you.
The question: till know, I don't realise, it was meant spreadseet or base
 table 1,000,000x1024 ?

Your example was given in a spreadsheet. My answer re: rows and columns was
therefore limits for the spreadsheet.

Your example for A target shows the one positive value for A in one
column and the negative values for A in a different column. In the target
the order of values by row is the same as in the source.
right, it should rest as in the input array
Which gets me back to I still don't understand what you need to accomplish.
I belive now, to be understood, I need to accomlish it as in example for A

Answers to a few questions may help me:
 - is the goal to rearrange the Raw Alphanumerical so it is organized
 like the target
yes, separately in files for A, B, C, etc, and additionally, if possible,
all in columns in one file
 - is there a specific repeatable method for why data is where it is in the
Raw Alphanumerical and if there is what are the rules? Knowing the rules
would go a long way to planning how to rearrange Raw into Target
output of each tool gives specyfic array of data, there are several tools.
Tools are active in axis of time,
independently each of other, in a kind of burst of time.

I am still trying to understand the source data. Looking again at the
spreadsheet I wonder does each row represent the same point in time? In
other words, for row 7 events were recorded from source A and B at the same
point in time. For row 9 events were recorded from source B, D and G at the
same point in time.

With this idea as reference my thought is to first organize the input so it
is collected in one of two ways with some similar rules for both methods.
First rule, no empty rows. Second rule, column A should be a time stamp for
when the event happened.
Method1
Column A is time stamp
Column B is A, B, ..., G, etc, a tag to indicate which device
provided the value
Column C is the value provided by the device

In this method Column A may have multiple rows with the same value because
multiple devices may have an event at the same time. Therefore the values
in column A and column B together make each row unique.

The spreadsheet can now be used as the source for a pivot table or database
query that displays the data in your desired format.

Method2
Column A is time stamp
Column B is A, B, ..., G, etc, a tag to indicate which device
provided the value
Column C is the value provided by the device
Column D is A, B, ..., G, etc, a tag to indicate which device
provided the value
Column E is the value provided by the device
Column F repeat pattern above...

This method requires data from each device, the device label and value, go
into specific columns. In other words device A must always put it's values
in columns B and C, device B puts its values in columns D and E, ...,
device G puts its values in columns N and O, etc.

As in the first method each row represents a single point in time

Again the spreadsheet would be used as the source for a pivot table or
database query to display the data.

I think Method1 is the better way to attempt. Devices can be added and
removed without considering what column the data goes in. It will always go
in A, B, and C. Timestamp, Device identifier, Value.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Where is Base?

2015-03-06 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Thanks for your support chaps! :)

I think the main problem was about HSqlDb being fairly fantastic as a
back-end when used as an external back-end, preferably as their latest
version from their official website (or your distro's repos or whatever)
but any of their versions will do apparently;
http://hsqldb.org/
Their 2.3.2 does full multi-threading. The latest version 2.3.2 improves
on access and management of very large data sets. It supports up to 270
billion rows of data in a single database and a hot backup capability.

Ok, so it seem my thoughts about it being mainly for small, light and very
fast databases was a bit off too! I'm not sure how that compares with
MySql/MariaDb or Postgresql but it sounds like, as almost always ime, the
simplest explanation to cover all available information is not always the
truth! HSqlDb seems good for rather large databases after all.

Also it sounds as though it is reasonably easy to export a .jar file (or
something) from Base, if you are currently using the internal back-end and
then just use that in an external version of HSqlDb then that works quite
well too apparently. This is something i wish had been clear many years
ago!!

So the only problem is with continued current usage of the internal
back-end but having easy migration routes into external back-ends might
help us deal with people's problems MUCH more easily in the future. Does
anyone here have a database that does still use the internal back-end? If
so is there any chance of experimenting with exporting as some sort of java
file with maybe a little help from some of the experts on this mailing
list? I would be interested to see how it plays out and whether it really
is as easy as has been suggested.

Right now my feeling right now is that moving to MySql/MariaDb still has
advantages, such as possibly being more widely used and therefore maybe
easier to get advice, guidance and maybe even training in.
Regards from
Tom :)

 Hi :)

I'm working with FilemakerPro since it was available for Windows (1995)

with Typo3 (using PHP and MySql) since 2002.
I always used FilemakePro for all kinds of single-user databases, e.g.
Address_lists, Invoices, etc. and later (beginning with FileMaker Pro 7.0)
I used it as a Frontend for MySql.

But unfortunately Filemaker ist not available for Linux, only for
Mac+Windows, so some days ago I gave LibreOffice Base (4.4) a try, did some
tutorials and now I'm very exited about its possibilites - especially the
use of direct mysql-queries (thats not possible with FileMaker).

But in LibreOffice Base there are some (in my opinion very important)
 things missing:

 1. I cannot use the internal LibreOffice Database together with an other
 external (e.g. Mysql-) Database.
With Filemaker I often created local (Filemaker-) Databases, containing
search-filters (or settings) for the local user that filter the lists of
the mySql-Data-Forms. This seems not possible with LO Base.

 2. LO Base is missing options to create apps for 'simple' users.
Using a LibreOffice Base file is too complicate for many users who simply
have to add/edit data. I know, there are standalone-forms, but there are
too few possibilities with that (e.g. no Macros).
For a 'simple' user, I'd like to have
 - *one* Window and buttons to switch the content of the window to
 different forms/reports etc.
 - a tab-controller element (switching through subforms with tabs)
 - a script-engine easier to use than macros (see FileMaker how this can
 be made perfectly)
 - Security-Settings/User-Rights, so that users cannot destroy their app
 by mistake

This year, I have to create a frontend for a really big MySql-Database
(100+ Tables). There is a web-app to browse this data, but for
adding/editing data there is no perfect solution yet (This customer uses a
 php-import-script for his Access-Databses atm...)

I would really like to implement this frontent with LO-Base, but I'm
afraid I will end up with Filemaker because I can create a more robust tool
with it (and also, because I'm used to it since years...)

LibreOffice base will bring not real new stuff due to lack of developer
interest, but you can perfectly build yourseff a frontend using the API and
basic. Keep away from forms and use Dialogs instead.

I'm curious to see what will be new in the next versions of LibreOffice
 Base.

 Regards
   Stefan

 P.S.:
Maybe I'm wrong with the results of my test and all/some of these options
already are possible - if so, please let me know ;)

If you are going to use Perl to manipulate graphic objects to insert
into a Calc document, why not use Perl for everything, including
querying your db, outputting your data in the desired format, and
inserting that array of data into a Perl-created/manipulated Calc file ?

Because all this has been implemented already to be used by anyone
without coding.
Hit F4 and drag your query into your favourite spreadsheet template.
Add spreadsheet formulas, (conditional) formatting, charts and stuff.
Finally, you may remove the store data flag from the import range so
the user is prompted to update the import range when opening this
document. All this works reliably out of the box.

Look at the following Perl modules :
 ODF::lpod
 OpenOffice::UNO
 OpenOffice::OODoc

How much time does it take to re-implemented the built-in functionality?
And why?

[libreoffice-users] history manager to delete files in recent documents, load url bar

2015-03-06 Thread message

Readers,

Why is the extension 'history manager'
(http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/en/project/HistoryMaster) not
in the libreoffice repository?

The 'start centre' ''improvement'' is not ideal for managing file
history, because it is possible to start directly components such as
'writer'.

Because we are talking about office macros. An office macro is stored in
the user profle, in the install directory or in an office document.

Thanks for sharing the perspective. I'll explain the simple logic
that's a building block of data-oriented environments such as Kexi.

Macro in LO is an equivalent of an MS Access module, which is stored
in database, just like in Kexi.
It's also an equivalent of a stored procedure, which is stored in a
database, and in addition execution engine usually happens to be
bundled in the same product database and can be controlled using the
same channel as data, structure and triggers are controlled.

(Sorry if I am writing this under the eyes of seasoned (real) db users
but still I hope it will be useful to someone)

I don't need to mention that sharing authentication rules and
transmission channels with the database engine is beneficial for
security. Compare that to storing code in home directory, enabled for
free modification.

What you have up and running on your server is a database. The office
suite and the database are 2 completely separate things. The database
accepts requests and returns requested record sets without knowing any
of your queries, forms, reports and macros.

 It accepts the exact same
requests from your web server returning the exact same record sets
without knowing anyting about your web server, script language or the
 client's browser.

True, just like the database does not know that a NAME column's
semantics is person's name.
It's the one or two upper layer(s) of your architecture that implement
the semantics.

Scripts/macros/forms/reports/query statements and everything else are
strings perfectly stored. Just like your bash scripts in a file
system. They are programs, stored as arrays of characters, without any
knowledge what's inside.

From that perspective, database is a storage medium, just like a file
system, with a different feature set.
For executing it you need an execution engine (javascript or python or
a clone of VB, etc.) and an execution context. Execution in an
environment itself calls a process call into being.

Ability of handling _programs_ on the server side is irrelevant to
ability of properly storing (textual, or binary) definition of
_macros_ and offering them to clients for retrieval, maybe versioning,
and protecting the access.

[libreoffice-users] PDF Forms - Trying to /not/ reinvent the wheel.

2015-03-06 Thread Michael Tiernan
I've done a lot of searching including the list archived and I've found
no answers yet.

I've been able to take a document and turn it into a form and export it
as a PDF form for filling in.

I'm looking to find out if anyone's (successfully I hope) created a PDF
form this way which *includes a little bit of javascript (or any other
script) which allows for some minor field manipulations.*

I just want to make sure I'm not accelerating towards a brick wall. ;)

My objective is simple. There's a lot of examples that already exist
that show how to create a date field in a form that is updated/filled in
when the PDF is opened. I'd like to get that field filled in using a
specific format and then have it validated.

All of the examples are how to do this using one of the Adobe tools to
put some javascript into place to make this work.

I'd like to find out if that javascript and field relationship can be
created from LibreOffice.

Thanks for everyone's time and bandwidth.

Any guidance is welcome.

[libreoffice-users] Columns

2015-03-06 Thread Carole Edwards Caruso
I have hundreds of pages with each page divided into two columns. I have
been doing this for at least two years with LibreOffice. Never had it
been a problem.

After the second last update, I find that when I open up a page I had
saved, no columns. I have to reset them. I am now using ver 4.4.1.2. I
still have to reset the columns.

Obviously, something was changed in the updates.

What is wrong here?

Thanks for any help.

Carole
