[libreoffice-users] double brackets

2015-12-13 Thread Thomas

Good evening
I have a 20,000 row file I am supposed to "review" (a translation by
someone else)

While changing things, I made a mistake and now one particular word
appears as

((word))

Naturally, the double brackets are NOT wanted.
When I try to search and replace them, Calc tell me, there are no such
double brackets.

But they are right in front of me on the screen.

Is there any particular reason why I cannot search for "((" ?

The "same" applies to searching for "," and replace that by "."
(of course, none of these searches uses the ")

Thank you
Thomas

What version of LO, what operating system, what printer?

I just successfully printed a 6x9 as follows
1. open LO 50.2.2
2. select from menu "Insert | Envelope..."
3. on Envelope dialog
3.1. Envelope tab, enter addressee and sender
3.2. Format tab, select size User Defined, set Width 9", Height 6"
3.3. Set Addressee position, from left 4.5", from top 3"
3.4. Set Sender position, from left 1", from top 1"
3.5. Printer orientation, print from top, vertical center (am using HP LJ
1000), no change to shift values
4. Click new document
some kind of bug or error, the new document is 9x7.25 (it has a 1.25 inch
top margin for unknown reason)
5. Select "Format | Page" from the menu
6. change height to 6"
7. change top margin to 0"
8. click OK
9. grab each text box, sender and addressee, and move to desired position
(they're too low after removing the margin)
9. Click print

Resulting output is correctly printed envelope.

Make sure that "Entire cells" and "Regular expressions" are deselected. With
that I have no problem with both searches.

In the Find & Replace dialogue, click More Options. You probably have
"Regular expressions" ticked. Untick it and try again.

The "same" applies to searching for "," and replace that by "." (of

Remember that what you see in a spreadsheet cell may very well not be
there! If those commas are fractional separators in numbers - e.g.
1,23 - they are not there in the same sense as then would be as text.
The details of this depend on your locale settings.

I trust this helps.

That sucks.
It *should* be quite easy since Kontact uses Akonadi which uses MySQL, so you
should be able to use the MySQL connector to link directly to the database...

No, I've not done it, but... :)

I'm not surprised at the lack of either documentation or chat about it,
unfortunately.

Numbers appearing on the screen as "5" do not change at all. The
latter one being the German localization. I am still fighting with
the problem, that this works in some cells, but not all (probably
because of the format of the entered data?). It would be helpful to
find a way change the thousand separator for "," to "." and the
decimal separator the other way around, because there are quite
literally thousands of items that need to be changed that way ...

Values that *appear* as the examples above may be stored as numbers
or as text. It is worth considering carefully what your data should
be. Many data items that look like numbers are in fact text strings
that happen to consist only of digits. Telephone numbers and numeric
postcodes are examples. The last four digits of my telephone number
are 4852. No-one would pronounce that "four thousand, eight hundred
and fifty-two". Someone else will have the same number but ending
2426. Does his telephone ring half as loud or half as often as mine?
Of course not. Telephone numbers and postcodes can also start with a
zero, which in these cases is significant, unlike leading zeroes in
numbers. My telephone area code is 020: that's not "twenty". If your
bank PIN was set (unwisely) to 0123, you could not get money out of
an ATM using "123" or "00123". Nor do you get more money by having a
"larger" PIN. James Bond was not Agent Seven (despite what UK
telephone directories believe).

It is possible - probably very easy - to enter similar data as a
mixture of different types. If your "decimal separator" is set one
way but you enter numeric data containing the alternative, it will be
interpreted as text - or perhaps even as a date. Data prepared in a
different locale may not be as it appears. There are two simple ways
to guide you to see the nature of your data:

o Set the horizontal alignment to Default. You can click whichever
alignment button is selected in the Formatting toolbar to cancel it,
or go to Format | Cells... | Alignment | Text alignment | Horizontal.
Numbers will be right-aligned and text left-aligned.

o Go to View | Value Highlighting. Numbers are shown in blue and text in black.

Choose carefully what your data should be. Convert any in the wrong
form. There are many ways to do this; the TEXT() and VALUE()
functions may help. Paste results back over your data. Now control
the appearance of your data by formatting it (Format | Cells...).
Ensure you have made appropriate choices at Tools | Options... |
Language Settings | Languages - in particular "locale setting" and
"Decimal separator key".

I trust this helps.

Re: [libreoffice-users] double brackets

2015-12-13 Thread James E. Lang
Thomas,

Unfortunately I no longer have your original post so I'm using quotes of it
from Brian Barker's response.

My first advice is to create a test copy of the spreadsheet file by saving it
as a differently named file. I construct such a file name by adding something
like test- or trial- to the front of the original file name. Then experiment
with this test copy. Twenty thousand rows are not to be trifled with while
poking and prodding a live file. Also remember that you can generally undo your
experimental changes.

See further comments below.

Regarding those that did not change:

Are these values computed? If yes, what is done in the formula? Or if no, try
F2 and look to see whether the number is preceded by a single quote
(apostrophe) which signifies that the number is a text string instead of a true
number.

What is the number format (Alt+O, L) for those cells? Though unlikely, it is
possible that a custom format has been employed.

Same comments.

The German language localization should have done that for true numeric values
that are formatted with the thousands separator attribute.

Brian also gave you very good information about numbers as text.

[libreoffice-users] Re: [bug 2/3] on both print preview and native pdf export, cell background slightly misaligned

2015-12-13 Thread Carlo Strata

Thank you very much Brian!

I saw you have used AOO 4.1.1 (from pdf properties), but I suppose it's
the same on the (definitively?) last 4.1.2.
In any case I will open a bug with your files attached too, classifying
it "Inherited From OOo", and I will post back here the associated number
and link.

I think I will also open a bug with respect to the "T" cell border
little overrun because one line that orthogonally meets another one
slightly trespassing it over without blending and exactly ending in it.
This other bug will also appear to be classified "Inherited From OOo",
always comparing your and my files.

Have a nice Sunday evening,

Carlo

I attach PDF output from your spreadsheet from *OpenOffice* both
natively (via Export as PDF...) and using File | Print... and CutePDF
Writer. You will see similar results - suggesting that this behaviour
appears to have been inherited from OpenOffice.

Im try to print 6x8 envelopes. The text prints perpendicular to the
long edge instead of paralleled to it no matter what format I select in

As precise and informative as always. Thank you!
However, I will not have the time to reformat everything.
This is a "review" job (of a translation) with tens of thousands of
cells for which I have only a few days.

Technical specifications of things I cannot see or deduct from the text.
Original client = Japanese company, but the order came from their German
subsidiary, which apparently ordered the translation from an Italian agency.
Initially they seemed to try a translation into English and from there
into German and the translator apparently did not know the difference
between , / .
AND the work apparently needed to be done in one of those CAT tools,
which did not work for me, so that I got "special permission" to work

with a CSV file derived from that CAT tool.

Maybe that will help you to image what the "data" look like ...

But that does not alter the fact, that your instructions are VERY helpful.
I will definitely make use of them in the future.

Delving again into that hell of letters and numbers ... probably until 2 am
Thomas
