Yes but the fact that you can get around a bug doesn't mean the bug

This is ridiculous. I've just been reading a question from a 2008 (3.2)
version of OpenOffice.org that is the same as my current problem. Namely
that you can't place images in the background on a business card.

I'm using LibreOffice 5.2 (Debian) and when I insert an image, it
refuses to go behind the text whether I select Arrange | Send to back or
Wrap | wrap through. It will go behind the text if I select Wrap | in
background but then it disappears. And no, before you ask, the paragraph
fill is set to none.

I finally found a setting in Format | Page | Transparency where setting
the transparency to 100% worked. Strangely the original setting was 50%
which resulted in the background image being hidden completely. A quick
experiment revealed that ANY setting other than 100% hid the background
image.

I have no idea what this "feature" is for but it seems completely
unintuitive and in conflict with the paragraph background setting, not
to mention the wrap in background feature.

So my beef is:
1) Arrange doesn't appear to work on labels,
2) wrap through doesn't appear to work on labels,
3) there seems to be a page background that is in front of any
background image,
4) the transparency setting for that page background only has two values
- 100% or opaque, and
5) this situation has been around for at least 8 years without being fixed.

Why can't the developers address these basic problems?

If you use a table for your layout then placing an image in the
background behaves as you would wish. Sadly LibreOffice uses a
frame-based layout for labels and that might be where your problem lies.

I do not experience problems with my Avery business card stock using the
table based approach.

Peter HB

I am using Avery business card (5371 - white letter size) template.

I gather you are suggesting creating a table to do the layout rather
than simply using the normal paragraph/text tools. That would place the
table above the graphic background, obviating the problem instead of
fixing it.

Given that it doesn't work this way when creating, for example,
letterhead, I still fail to see why this should be treated as anything
other than a long-standing bug. I created letterhead for the same
organization using the same graphic and Wrap through and Wrap in
background both work. Wrap through has the image above the text while
wrap in background has the text above the image. Page transparency is
irrelevant.

Perhaps the developers have some reason why the user experience for
these two similar types of documents should be so different but It
strikes me as a flaw in the user interface that should be fixed.

I'm using LibreOffice 5.1.3 (a bit old now) on Windows Vista. After
selecting a source, nothing happens for me; probably something broken
in my setup. However, the "Select Source" dialog looks identical to
one used in GIMP, which does work and opens an external application to
operate the scanner (either "Windows Image Acquisition" wizard or an
application from the scanner manufacturer, depending which "source" I
select).

Assuming it's similar on Linux, I'd guess that the actual dialog where
you select the scan mode is some other application not directly under
LibreOffice's control which defaults to a particular set of options.
You may need to figure out what that application is (maybe XSane?),
and see if it has any options for saving presets etc. If it's opening
a separate application, that may also account for the delay opening
the scanner options, which you previously mentioned.

Sorry I can't be much more help; perhaps someone else using Linux
might be able to confirm some of the details.

As for the macros I'd like to

Is the document saved as .ods or .xls? Saving as .ods might get rid of
the Excel macros. If that doesn't help, try Tools > Macros > Organise

the spreadsheet in any of the tabs there.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Help with extra space at bottom of pages.

2016-12-21 Thread libreoffice-ml . mbourne
Do a lot of the paragraphs have "Keep with next paragraph" selected in
the "Text Flow" tab? I've seen that do strange things before where
paragraphs tend to stay on the last page they were forced onto, because
LibreOffice is trying to keep more paragraphs together than actually fit
on a page.

Someone posted here a couple of days ago mentioning that "Keep with next
paragraph" is always set when opening .docx files. If that's happening
in your case, you'd be better off keeping your main copy in .odt format,
since that's LibreOffice's "native" format, and just export a copy to
.docx to share with other people as and when necessary (or even better,
export to PDF if they don't need to edit it).

[libreoffice-users] Another LO anti-feature

2016-12-21 Thread Andreas Säger
How can I disable the silly dialog that pops up after every search&replace on
a Calc sheet? After correcting a column of 250,000 numbers it tries to write
250,000 cell addresses into a list box which takes by a magnitude more time
than the replacement process.
If such feature is really, really desired by the Excel fans, then it should
be possible to disable it. Furthermore, such feature should be supervised by
an experienced Calc developer who knows that a search run returns a
collection com.sun.star.sheet.SheetCellRanges with interface
XSheetCellRanges having method getRangeAddressesAsString. In my case, this
method would return one string "Sheet1.A1:A25"
http://www.openoffice.org/api/docs/common/ref/com/sun/star/sheet/XSheetCellRanges.html#getRangeAddressesAsString
