I recommend that you re-install LibreOffice from the source

good. PDF is a final output, used to make it hard for other people to edit

finished work. use ODT format for libreoffice... you'll save yourself a lot

form, PDF is best, but you can use .doc or .docx . but MS formats aren't
intended to be the working format for libreoffice, but a way to exchange

Re: [libreoffice-users] Image Anchor Selection

2023-06-15 Thread Joe Conner
Thank you for educating me further. Here is why I use "To page"
anchoring. I make a newsletter to send out at the end of the calendar
year depicting what I have done through the year including photos. Only
family and friends would be interested.

While other software tools would perhaps be better suited to this task,
I am familiar enough with Writer to make it work. I format it in two
columns, and it usually runs one page printed on both front and back. My
issue is when I go back later to make edits, and unless an image is
anchored to the page it will wander around sometimes being forced to
jump to the back when I want it to remain on the front.

I hope this explains my reasons for using "To page" as an anchor. It is
a bit like using my pliers as a hammer instead of choosing the proper
tool for the job.

I did not mean to kick a hornets nest and stir up a storm of flying insects.

Respectfully,

    Joe Conner

Dear Joe Conner and @all,

You mentioned that the menu item anchoring "To page" is no longer
available.

Unfortunately you did not mention in which cases you need this function.

Here I'd like to review  @Robert Großkopf, quote, "Note: It may have
been omitted because anchoring to a page means it's fixed to a page
like in old layout days and will cause problems in master documents."
But not just in master documents.

But the question should be what is the anchoring to the page supposed
to achieve.
IMHO it seems only reasonable, e.g. in a book the first page should be
designed with a picture.
Or one wants to insert full page images on several pages, e.g. at the
beginning of chapters.
Of course I don't know the application of other users, but here
examples would be helpful.

When anchoring images to the page, keep in mind that they can no
longer "wander" to other pages.
So if you have an image anchored to page 5, you can insert or remove
as much text as you want in front of that page,

but the image will remain fixed to page 5.
This can even mean that if you remove a lot of text in front of it,
you'll only have 4 pages left, for example,
but the image will still be anchored to page 5 and will probably just
disappear.

Many users are mostly not aware of this function so in detail and you
have a completely different idea of how it should work.
Since the function anchoring "To Page" was very often misinterpreted
in the past, it was probably decided not to offer this menu item
directly.
The anchoring "To Page" function is now only available in the
Styles/Frame Styles.

How do I achieve anchoring "To Page" in the easiest and quickest way
possible?
I just mentioned the Frame Styles, which should now be dealt with more
intensively.

LibreOffice Writer has, so to speak, predefined processes for images.
Every image inserted into Writer is associated or assigned to the
"Graphics" Frame Style (yes, Frame Style).

The, I'll call it special, feature of images is the caption of the same.
So if you want to add a caption to an image, a frame is inserted
around the image.

As known, the caption can be above or below the image.
The frame around the image is again assigned to the Frame Style "Frame".

In the following we assume that no caption is added to the image.
This means that the Frame Style "Graphics" is relevant for the image.
Now, in order to achieve a quick, even immediate, anchoring of an
image to the page, we need to adjust the "Graphics" Frame Style.

Here's how to do it:

Open Writer with a blank document. Modify the "Graphics" Frame Style
by setting the anchoring to "To page" in the Frame Style and save it
by clicking OK.
Now save the document as a Template, possibly with the check mark for
"Set as default template".

If you now open the Template, you will get the document "Untitled 1".
Now insert an image. This image is now automatically anchored to the
page, because it is assigned to the changed Frame Style "Graphics".
Finally, I would like to point out that this procedure will only lead
to a good and desired result in special cases.

The most common anchors will probably be the variants offered in the
context menu (not on the page).
On this page you will find further descriptions about anchoring and
positioning of images:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Videos/Insert_and_edit_images_in_Writer_Part_1

I personally wouldn't consider the missing selection in the context
menu for anchoring "To page" as a bug.

I hope I have been able to help a little to understand the processes
involved in anchoring images.

Regards
Harald

And: open Tools → Customize → Context Menus.
There is missing the context menu for "Anchor" - don't know how it

Add "Anchor to Page" from the available commands.

Note: Might be it has been dropped because anchor to page means it is

Do you have the following checked:

TOOLS -> OPTIONS -> LIBREOFFICE CALC -> VIEW

Value highlighting? If so, uncheck it.

Subject: [libreoffice-users] extracting cell values

Users Ahoy:

Is there a way to get LO (v5.2.7.2) calc to extract the numerical value
from a cell, and use that instead of the cell reference in further
calculations?

Frinstance, if I have 167 in cell A1, and want 16.7 in A2, how can I
program it, (if at all)?

If I put =A1/10 into A2, A2 will contain A1/10, not 16.7,even though it
will display as 16.7.

I want to get away from cell references and use the contained values.
Can I?

I thought that =VALUE(A1)/10 might work, but the result continues to use
the cell reference, not the contained value.

Miss K

If you don't want to use cell references, how would you inform Calc
which one of the thousands of cells in a sheet was the one holding the
value you wanted it to use in your calculations?

If you actually do see A1/10 in cell A2, this suggests that cell A1 is
formatted as text not a numeric value. In which case =VALUE(A1)/10 does
work.

You will find some excellent Calc User Guides here:
https://tinyurl.com/aa4mrlt

LibreOffice version 5.2.7.2 is quite old and I would recommend updating
to at least version 7.1.6 from:
https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download/

a link from document to footnote is no problem. Set cursor where the
number of the footnote should appear. Go to menu Insert >
Cross-Reference. In section 'Type' choose 'Footnotes'. Then select the
footnote in section 'Selection'. Then choose 'Reference' in section
'Insert reference to'. Click 'Insert' and 'Close'.

The reference is inserted as normal text. To give it the same
appearance than the others, mark it, then open the character styles in
the side bar and double-click the style 'Footnote Anchor' to assign it.

The link from footnote to text can of cause only go that place, where
the footnote was originally inserted.

Kind regards

Re: [libreoffice-users] Calc: Formatting cell with decimal point but no decimal digits

In calc, you could format the cell as currency.

of 123.45 to be received as 12,345, losing the decimal.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

[libreoffice-users] Counting cells

I am confused about how to count a number of cells that have a number.
In Calc, if cells a1:a11 each may or may not have a number in it, what
formula may I use to count how many cells have a number? I do not want
the sum of the numbers, just how many cells contain a number.

Thank you.

Re: [libreoffice-users] percent to whole fraction

2019-04-26 Thread Joe Conner

Calc can format cells as a fraction.

For instance in an empty cell input "=pi()" without the quotes. The cell
will display  3.141592654.

Then format the cell as FORMAT -> FRACTION -> FORMAT CODE -> and enter
???/??? which will change the display to 355/113. Is this what you need?

I'm running LibreOffice 5.1.6.2 on Linux Mint 18 an noticed "FORMAT >

watermark by doing this:

  1. Use "Format > Page > Area"  menu to access the "Fill" setting.
  2. I chose a "Fill" setting of "Bitmap" and used the "Import Graphic"
 button to import my image.
  3. Then, I went to the "Transparency" tab and set transparency
setting

of 85% (you'll probably want a higher setting)

When I then typed some text over the background image, the image was in
full color (no opacity).

Maybe this is the new/current way to add a watermark in Writer.

Hope this helps!

The LibreOffice Writer 6.0 guide also documents the above information:

I use Format > Page > Area > Bitmap    to add a background image.

Thanks for the work-around. I downloaded and installed the offline help,
and it still shows FORMAT -> PAGE -> BACKGROUND. It makes sense to work
on the code to make it easier to maintain but to exclude the help files
from changes should be a resulting responsibility.

So what do you want to have displayed in that cell? Any formula
defines what is displayed. What would be the function of the
additional text?

How can this be done?

If you need a function reference, as here, but want the displayed
result to contain additional material, you need to include that
material inside the formula containing the function. You can
concatenate text with a function result using the CONCATENATE()
function, or more simply using the "&" operator. Any non-text value,
such as a number, is implicitly converted to text to enable this. For
example,

=SQRT(3+1)
displays
2
whereas
="The square root of 3+1 is "(3+1)&"."
displays
The square root of 3+1 is 2.

I trust this helps.

I have seen this font installer outside LO. It was in my Ubuntu 16.04

You don't need to install that package at all, see

The number of rows and columns is fixed by calc. Deleting rows and/or
columns get replaced to maintain the fixed rows and columns.

You can however hide rows and columns. Then it looks like they do not exist.

explaining how LO does it.

Hold on: you asked on a list concerned with LibreOffice about printing
envelopes and you got a reply about how LibreOffice prints envelopes?
I have to say that I'm not surprised! Surely you shouldn't expect
anything else?

It's worth saying that "printing envelopes" is not really a concept
any more than "printing letters to my maiden aunt" or "printing
notices for the youth club notice board". An envelope is just a
particular variety of paper stock, and you can print on it just as you
can print on any other stock. Set your document size and orientation
to that of your envelopes and proceed as usual. The only stumbling
block may be discovering in which orientation your printer expects
envelopes to be loaded (which varies between printers) and how you
then ensure that you document is constructed appropriately to match.

Finally someone said LO only prints one envelope for one document, ...

LibreOffice has the facility easily to add to a letter (or other
postal document) a single envelope in which to post it. Most letters
go in a single envelope. If you don't want that, don't use it. I
suspect your respondents were trying to be helpful. And what is this
"one document"? You said you wanted to printed envelopes - nothing
about documents.

... not 100 envelopes with a custom return address.

Is that what you asked for?

That's easy: construct a document that is the face of your envelope
with the custom return address and nothing else. Experiment to confirm
orientations as above. Load your envelopes. Print the document,
setting "Number of copies" to 100. Job done.

Or do you perhaps mean something else? Do you want to print a hundred
envelopes with the same return address but with a hundred different
addresses on them - presumably sourced from a database of addresses?
If so, you have not mentioned most of that! Most word processors have
the facility to do this, and LibreOffice is no exception. The process
is called "mail merge" and is covered in Chapter 11 of the Writer
Guide "Using Mail Merge - Form Letters, Mailing Labels, and Envelopes"
- specifically in the section "Printing envelopes". It's not trivial,
but I think it is fairly easy to follow.

I trust this helps.

I'm using LibreOffice 5.1.3 (a bit old now) on Windows Vista. After
selecting a source, nothing happens for me; probably something broken
in my setup. However, the "Select Source" dialog looks identical to
one used in GIMP, which does work and opens an external application to
operate the scanner (either "Windows Image Acquisition" wizard or an
application from the scanner manufacturer, depending which "source" I
select).

Assuming it's similar on Linux, I'd guess that the actual dialog where
you select the scan mode is some other application not directly under
LibreOffice's control which defaults to a particular set of options.
You may need to figure out what that application is (maybe XSane?),
and see if it has any options for saving presets etc. If it's opening
a separate application, that may also account for the delay opening
the scanner options, which you previously mentioned.

Sorry I can't be much more help; perhaps someone else using Linux
might be able to confirm some of the details.

Using insert-> image-> scan-> select source-> scan mode-> mode the

How do I change the default to gray or color? Selecting color or gray
works for one cycle only. There is no "Save" button.

Today when I again tried to scan, the choices of gray and color had
disappeared and lineart is the only available choice in the mode
dropdown. Recycling the selection process a second time revealed the
gray and color choice.

Also, to get to the mode window takes several seconds for the scan mode
window to appear so the internal coding must be very convoluted.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Simple sum in column getting zero in libreoffice calc 5.

2016-05-11 Thread Joe Conner
Also, format the column as numbers. That way when you enter a number it
is recorded as such. If the column is formatted as text, and you input a
number it is interpreted as a character.

One way you can get numbers as text is when you import a CSV file, and forget
to merk the column as numbers. Or when you paste from plain text and forget the
same.

One way to get them as numbers is to add a function in another column,
containing
=NUMBERVALUE(B2)
if the first number is in cell B2.
Then copy this down for all numbers in the original column. Now you have a copy of your numbers, and they
are really formatted as numbers. Now Copy this column with Edit > Copy and do a Edit > Paste
Special over the original "text numbers", selecting only "Numbers".

Other text words look appropriately close to the following word.

Is there some way to adjust this spacing between text words?

Yes. You must first select all the cells you want to sort. You can
easily do this by clicking the little square above the row numbers and
left of the column letters. This will select the entire sheet. Next from
the top heading bar at the very top select DATA then from the drop-down
context menu select SORT. Then select the sort critera (in your case the
columns that have the names in it. Also mark if you want the sort
ascending or descending (you want ascending). If you want a secondary
sort you can input the criteria also. Finally click the OK button at the
bottom.

(a la AOO), when I *want* the Styles box. So, with every document, I
now have to click on the Styles icon in the Sidebar. I've looked
everywhere to find a way to make "Styles" the default Sidebar box, but
with no luck. To, me this was a totally unnecessary UI "improvement."

If I could echo Andreas with a message to the developers. Please stop
making changes just to make changes. Every UI change forces the user
to change the way s/he uses the program, and those changes affect our
personal performance and productivity, at least until we learn the new
system. Yes, once the new UI is learned, it, too, becomes second

as to justify its replacement of the older way of working.

a bit ridiculous.

Fyi: major changes like this should be ANNOUNCED - and specific requests

Sorry, but the context menu rework and changes to the Table toolbar and menu

master, the entire 5.0.0 beta run, and for all 5.0.0 release candidates
since then.

The change to the Table menu to add the missing Unprotect Cells as in
tdf#93713 https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93713 will
correct that oversight, but there has been ample time to preview and comment

invite folks to stay more involved with development and QA going forward.

From a Design UX-advise perspective the HIG work dictates that we simplify
the user interface for the benefit of our beginner users--the context menus
were put on a diet accordingly :D

In my reply, I keyed on having the original on the left page and
the translation on the right page. By having these appear side by
side, one can see both at the same time and compare them if desired.
What seems to be obvious to me is that the number of words
required for a given thought in different languages can be different.
So what would be a full page for one language may be less than or more
than a page. So there is no guarantee that the the same thoughts will
be contained in side by side pages. So, what purpose does having
original and translation being side by side? It is quite possible that
in a rather long article, some of the side by side pages may not have
any thoughts in common.
My thoughts came from how a Bible program handles this situation.
For example, I have German and English translations of the Bible side
by side. There the same verses are shown for them. Sometimes there are
extra spaces on the German side, and sometimes there are extra on the
English side. I also have a German-English New Testament from the
1800's. It also has the same print layout.
A very important question is: What is the purpose of having the
original and the translation side by side? This should determine the
layout.

pass two threads of raw text to a section in which one thread is
passed

with alternating the text manually and inserting a gazillion page

I think that page styles will do it. Open an untitled document
in Writer. Use the F4 key to open the Styles and Formating Window.
Click the Page Styles icon at the top of this window. Double click
First Page from the lists of page styles to apply this style to
the page. Then right click First Page and select Modify from the
context menu. Change the Next Style property to Left Page. Click
OK.
This should do it. Enter the original text on the left pages
and the translations on the right pages.
The reason this works is because of styles. They insure that
each left page is followed by a right page which is followed by a
left page... Writer is designed to begin with the first page on the
right, so you need the First Page to fulfill this need. From then
on the left and right pages will follow correctly. (No page breaks
are needed.)
In the bottom right corner of the Writer window are three icons
of pages. The one of the right is the one you should click if it is
not highlighted. This places two pages in the window beginning with
a right page first followed by a left right page combination.

It was a LO4.0 .ods file. Further investigation: The .pdf can be
exported with a password requirement, but it requires selecting the
SECURITY tab and re-entering the password. I contend that if the .ods
required a password to open, then an export to .pdf should have the
password required and preset without having to go searching for the

0 to 360 degrees
while internally using 0 to 2pi, (similar to the date display using a
double number internally)?

SNIP

I think such a format should be a part of the ODF standards.

Such number format does not exist. But there is an old feature request
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=58369

Kind regards
Regina
Thank you Regina. I notice that the bug 58369 opened in 2008 has only
five votes. Maybe this discussion can generate some more support for it.

I have a spreadsheet where one cell is defined by several others with a

proper values are entered, so that won't be a problem.

You want the ABS function:

=ABS(-56) returns 56.

=ABS(12) returns 12.

=ABS(0) returns 0.

Hello!

I have developed an application using libreoffice base. I navigate to all

I've created some reports using report builder, but cannot trigger the

the impossibility of externally accessing the dynamic reports, but I am
hoping it is lack of knowledge that is turning up these research results.
Can anyone enlighten me on this?

I resorted to using forms to produce a dynamic data grid. This could work,
but only if its possible to make it more presentable, instead of looking
like a table.

My whole project hinges on getting presentable dynamic reports to work.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thank you!

Strange. I download that file that I uploaded and I can't change the width

I think the problem may be the settings. Look at TOOLS - PROTECT
DOCUMENT - (Both SHEET and DOCUMENT) uncheck each.

Did this do it for you?

You could use this kind of formula structure:
  =IF(ISNUMBER(A1),A1+27,) (without the quotes).
This should do what you want.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Replacing graphic images in documents

2011-11-29 Thread Joe Conner

On 11/29/2011 6:48 AM, James Finnall wrote:

Hello List,

For years with OpenOffice I was able to use a document as template to
print my photos on 8 1/2x11 photo paper by reloading the document
and simply replacing the images.

I think it was UBuntu version 11 that changed me over to LibreOffice.
I have found that my documents seem to load and print just fine as
they were originally saved. But I have not been able to locate a
method to replace the graphic images in a document, either by the top
menu or by right clicking the image.

The only way I have found is to delete the image and then insert the
new image from scratch! This is most difficult for precise image size
and placement. I use a standard aspect on my camera (3:2) and have
the image size for all four photos exactly the same. They are also
positioned to allow just a barely visible white line between the
photos for cutting. And the margins are set to be allowed on my
printer without the images being cropped off.

To duplicate all these settings on every image is way too time
consuming. I need to be able to simply change the image in the four
graphic entities without effecting size, placement or aspect ratio of
the original image.

Anybody have any suggestions that I might try to replace the images of
a document?

Thank you,
James

Have you tried to insert a frame, and then put your photo into it?
