Are you talking about Scribus or LibreOffice (LO)? This list is about
LO. If you mean LO, then you should use a different page style for the
first two pages and reset the page count on the third one.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Setting Defaults [SOLVED]

2017-04-24 Thread Ian Whitfield

*Thanks Cley*

That did it for me - It was not the 'Local' or the 'User Profile' that
was out - but thanks to others for the suggestions!!

It was just the convoluted (IMHO) way that LO works to achieve this.
I my World I would suggest that a better way to do this is to have a
"Default" set of settings, (that you change in Preferences), and these
are how the Program _always_ starts up. Then if you need special
Templates you select this after the Program is started and they over
ride the Default.

Just my Penny/Cent's worth!! But at least I've solved this problem that
has bugged me for a long time!!

So thanks to all

[libreoffice-users] Setting Defaults

2017-04-20 Thread Ian Whitfield

Hi All

I have a MAJOR problem setting some defaults in LibreOffice!!

The first one is the Default Font - I have battled with this for some
time now and discussed it on the Forum and tried ALL the suggestions but
can not get rid of 'Liberation Serif' as the default!! This should be a
quick change in the 'Tools > Options' Menu but it is not!!

Why is this so difficult and how do you do it??!!

Second in the last few days on a new fresh install of LibreOffice' on
another machine I find the Page Size is set to 'Letter" an American
standard not used by the rest of the World!! How do you change this to
'A4"?? Again it should be a basic change in the same 'Options' Menu like
most other Programs have.

In both cases I'm working with LO ver 5.3.0.3 both running PClinuxOS 64-bit.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Default font in LO calc

2017-02-20 Thread Ian Whitfield

*Thanks Everyone*

I seem to have stirred-up a real Hornets Nest here - but to me it just
shows how badly this part of LO is!!! It's a GREAT program except for
this problem and of course the orphan child Base!!

Anyway - still no luck here - I tried the Side-Bar method first of all
but my version has no such option as Cell Styles - so no joy there!!

Next I tried starting a new Spreadsheet, changing to the Font and size I
want, (which is what I've been doing for a couple of years or so), and
then saving this as a Template with the name 'Default'. I then close
down the program and re-start it and it comes up with Liberation Sans 10
still *GRR!!!*

This should be one change in the Options Menu - "Set Default Font and
Size". Why all these hoops to jump through!

It's no wonder some people leave LO for other programs!!

But thank you all for trying - appreciated. (back to the repetitive
manual method I guess!)

So I thought I would try Paul's idea and try and edit the Default

edit it??

This should be as easy to do as it is in Scribus!!! Why make things so

If you want to change the default font, and setting the default template is the

Re: [libreoffice-users] Help with LO Forms

Thanks Guys - Appreciated!!

But I'm confused. The Handbook says Calc can be used as the datasource
for a Form in Writer.
But even Alexander's method still gives me no option to select the
Registered Spreadsheet (The options box remains empty)!!

The other replies tell me Calc can _NOT_ do this (But the Handbook says
it can!!??)

Everyone else wants me to use Base but I'm NOT interested in this at all
as I battled with it for 7 years and could never get a stable set-up. It
crashed frequently and usually took all the data with it or 'gabbled'
the data - so you spend more time with back ups and patching damaged
data records. I can not let the end user have such an unstable program
to work with. I hoped the Calc/Writer Form would prove more reliable.

So if this can not work I'll have to move to Kexi which is rock solid,

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Compatibility of LO Base with Access databases

2016-08-01 Thread Ian Whitfield

*Hi all*

*Re: The LO Base discussion* - just my "Penny's Worth"!!!

After a 5+ years effort to use LO Base I have given up completely!! It
is *NOT* usable at all in it's "out of the box" set-up, ie with the HSQL
engine. It is totally unstable, crashes frequently AND - *MORE
IMPORTANT* - trashes all you data when it goes down!!! This seems to be
something to do with the compressing that the program does as you exit
the program.

The only way I got any (sort of results) was by using MySQL as the
backend but it took a couple of months to get it working and after a few
months even that crashed on me. I recently had to re-build my computer
after a hardware failure and my OpSys upgraded to 64bit and since then I
can not even get the MySQL linking in LO Base to even start!!

So if you are happy to keep lots and lots of backups, and spend lots and
lots of time re-building everything at almost monthly intervals - and by
re-building I mean the Database Tables, redesign all your Forms and
set-up all your Queries and Reports from scratch - then go with it,
otherwise give it a miss.

I have searched for a suitable replacement. I run Linux here, and have
looked at many programs. In desperation I was keeping things going using
LO Calc and this is not easy. The rest of LO is fine and I use it a lot
but base is the (VERY) weak link in the chain. This not only my opinion
- if you dig around you will find many reports of this.

Early this month I gave *Kexi* a second try and I'm finding it very
workable. It is still a bit "young" but does everything I want for my
Database and I'm very comfortable with it. It is "All-in-one" using
SQLite as the engine and the only major problem I have come across is
the program crashing during Form design but frequent (say every 5min
saves) seems to get round this. Doing actual work with the finished
set-up has so far proved Rock Solid. It's worth a look at and stay with
it long enough to learn its rather different layout and way of doing thins!!

Have fun - I am and very happy to be away from LO Base.

All the best

[libreoffice-users] LO Base - Dropdown boxes

Re: [libreoffice-users] Calc as a Flat File Database

2016-03-09 Thread Ian Whitfield

Thanks Dan and Alan

I know about the Base > Calc link but I have been using Base since about
2010 and had many, many crashes where in most cases the crash takes out
the data as well and you need to spend hours and hours re-building the
Database and re-designing your Forms etc. This has happened repeatedly
with the embedded engine and also with the MySQL engine.
As far as I'm concerned there is basic unstability in Base itself which
makes it unusable on a day-to-day basis!!

This was why I was wanting to try another route.
I tried Kexi but it is still to early in its development to be reliable.
I wanted to try Glom but it is unavailable on my OpSys (PClinuxOS).
So I was hoping to try a simpler option of Calc plus a Form.
Thanks for pointing out to me the 'Form' option under Data - I had not
noticed that.
Unfortunately it is not very useable for me which is a great pity as
this would be the perfect answer if it was.

Thanks for the pointers - my search continues..
Any suggestions of a reliable Flat File Database would be of interest to me.

Or if not would it be possible to achieve this using Macros??

[libreoffice-users] LibreOffice Base and MySQL

Hi All

I have been trying to import a CSV file from Calc into MySQL to run with
Base for over a week now and can not believe this is so difficult to do
so I'm hoping some other Base users might have cracked this one!!

My OpSys is PClinuxOS - 32-bit and MySQL is ver 5.1.73. Everything is
running on localhost.

My CSV file is in Calc and has 2600 rows and 78 cols. I save it as a CSV
file which is 717.8Kb in size. Field Names are in row 1.

I have tried many times with phpMyAdmin with no luck and today I
installed MySQL Workbench - also no luck.

In all cases I get the error ...

MySQL said: Documentation

corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use
near 'varchar(10), `NULL` varchar(10), `NULL` varchar(10), `NULL`

MyAdmin seems to stop after only 38 fields and the error does not show
the field names in the error. Also it is not MY SQL syntax it is
MyAdmin's syntax!!

Workbench says - ERROR 1064 (42000) at line 1: You have an error in your
SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server
version for the right syntax to use near
'RecordID,Status,StatusGraphic,Title,PrefFirstName,FirstName,LastName,Maiden/Form'

Operation failed with exitcode 1.

Can anyone help me out please. I'm NOT a Database expert just a user and
must get this DB up and running again ASAP!!

Many, many thanks

Thanks Alex

Sorry have been away from the computer for some days due to work and
other personal reasons!!

I seem to be getting somewhere but I sit with the problem that the DB
will not accept the old username and/or Password.

Is there a way to reset this at all??

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Lost connection to Database.

2015-11-02 Thread Ian Whitfield

Up-date

I have been busy with other things and just got back to this problem.

I found that the link to the Class file was not working so corrected
that and the whole set-up now works fine.

But when I try to open the Database it opens the input Form and pops up
an error -

"The data content could not be loaded
Can't find file: ./FS/Members.frm (errno:13)"

But the Members form IS opening all right, and its actual path is
root/var/lib/mysql/FS/Members.frm. But it is not being populate.

Any thoughts??

[libreoffice-users] Lost connection to Database.

2015-10-20 Thread Ian Whitfield

Hi All

Due to problems with Kernel updates I have rebuilt my system using the
last ISO disk I had, (2014-12).

I re-installed the ISO formatting the complete drive, updated the system
via Synaptic to bring it up to date and restored all my backed-up data
to /home. I then restored the MySQL folder under /var/lib that contains
my Database.

I then updated LO to the latest version = 5.0.2.2

But now when trying to connect to my database I get the error "The JDBC
driver could not be loaded"

mysqld is set in Services to run on Boot, Skip networking is commented
out in /etc/my.cnf.
Current driver in Base Options is set to -
com.sun.star.comp.sdbc.JDBCDriver (with pooling enabled).

Any suggestions please??

PCLOS 32-bit. KDE,

Thanks

In my life at work, (from 60s to early 70s), in Laboratories I used
Slide Rules all the time!! I had the 'Standard' type as well as a
Circular one but eventually got a Tubular Slide Rule. It was aprox 3 to
4 cm in Diameter and closed up was about 10cm Tall (long), but because
of its spiral design was the equivalent to a Standard 55 Slide Rule so
very much more accurate.

In fact I still have two of these - the Standard one and the Tubular
one!! (The Circular one has gone missing over the years.)

In one job I had in Bulawayo, (Rhodesia), in the late 60s I had to go
down to the factory floor in the late afternoon to look after the

African Workers thought that it was a kind of Calculating Microphone I
was using that I spoke the calculations into and it gave me the

Slide Rule and then writing down the answers!!!

Only later on did we get the first 'Facit, hand operated Calculating
Machine' - you had to work out the position of the decimal point
yourself, it just gave you a string of numbers!! Later we got electric
ones!!! I believe the mechanics of the original Facit Calculators was
developed somewhere in Scandinavia and working it all out drove the
Inventor crazy. Having opened one up at one time I can understand why!!

Great times!!! I also remember later desperately trying to buy a Four
Function Hand Calculator in Sanction Plagued Rhodesia for a ridicules
price!! But later got a friend in America to get the first of several
'Texas Instruments' Calculators, (could never get the hang of Reverse

*Hi All

*After 25+ years in the Computer business I retired in the early 2000s.
I had been involved with CP/M, DOS and Windows during this period and
even did a Xenix Course at one time which I found interesting, (Unix was
a propitiatory name in those days!!). I also played with Coral Linux,
(who remembers that?? Rumored to actually MS Linux given to Coral to
Test the Waters!!!)

The first thing I did after I retired was get rid of Windows!! I started
with Ubuntu but hated Gnome - so I tried Kubuntu. Better but I was
still not happy so moved to Mint. Better still but something still
missing. Then found PClinuxOS - tried it and have stayed there ever
since. Magic flavour of Linux - can not recommend it enough!!

I run a Desktop and an old Laptop both PCLOS. Converted my Partner a few
years ago as well when her Windows crashed for the umpteenth time and
she loves it too. We both run Specialist Groups on the Internet, produce
publications etc etc and we are a totally Microsoft-Free Zone (except
for Skype - which MS bought anyway!!)

I have also helped a few others to convert and do so whenever the chance
comes up.

With the exception of a lot of games and specialist programs written
only for Windows you can do everything the average person needs to do
with Linux and it's better priced, more secure, faster etc etc and the
Support Forums are awesome.

I still have an HP/Compaq Tablet - TC 1100 - a great machine for its
time and would love to get Linux on that but have had no luck. Would
love a Linux Tablet!! Will NOT look at any Apple products and there is
nothing worth doing on small Android screens except SMSs so I don't look
there either.

I also battled to find a good OCR program for a couple of years on my

I can recommend this to anyone who needs, or uses, OCR as a regular job,

[libreoffice-users] Libre Office Base

Hi All

I'm running two copies of LO Base here - and old one using HSQL embedded
and a new one using MySQL.

Firstly I notice is that if I sort the DB the sort only holds for the
duration of the session. Is it possible to make a sort order stick.
ie - I sort into Lastname then First Name and would like that to remain
fixed.

Second on the new MySQL version the Tick Boxes come out very small. Is
it possible to enlarge these at all?

My version of LO is 4.4.0.3 on PClinuxOS.

the serial letter wizard does not mention that one of its products is a

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Where is Base?

2015-03-02 Thread Ian Whitfield

Hi Peter

Noted on your comments and others

I can confirm that using the embedded DB in Base is a disaster - I
battled with it for a couple of years until I found out about using an
external engine - I use MySQL and have had _NO_ problems, (except my own
finger problems!!) since then.

Regarding images in the Database I have about 2600 records with a
maximum of 7 images per record. I had no problems with this under
Base/MySQL except that the DB file gets very large as a copy of each
image is included in the DB. I just recently came across a tutorial on
'Linking Images' rather than including them and this works like a charm
and the DB stays much smaller and therefore faster.

The tutotial can be found here -/_www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsHqqvn2zYg_/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsHqqvn2zYg

Another nice plus is that if you control your image file names you can
be sure that your DB always shows the latest image - works for me!!

Hope this helps

Maybe it is a funny in Base itself??? And it may come right with the

In itself the problem does not make my DB unusable and I must press on
with it so I guess the best is to just put the RecordID number in by

Seems ridicules but I guess it's what we all call a Workround.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LO Base Problem

2015-02-20 Thread Ian Whitfield

Hi Alex

I really appreciate your help here!!

But still no luck - My replies are below.

A quick, alternative possibility :

Create a new ODB file that connects to your database. Save it under a
new name.

Open the newly named (and currently empty, at least with regard to
forms, queries, etc) ODB file.
I tried this and the ID field comes through as 'No increment' and still
will NOT change!!

Did you read Fernand's comment ?
Yes - There is only ONE field on my Form that calls this field. The one
I'm trying to change.

your old RecordID was just an INT that you filled in yourself -
No - it was empty, like all my fields), and I imported my old data from
a CSV file and then started to work. That,s when I discovered I had not
set it to Auto Increment.

so now that you have converted it to INT AUTO_INCREMENT, did you regenerate the
values, or have you just carried on from the previous lastinsert_id() of
the RecordID field ?

I can not change it so have not regenerate it.
All I can do at the moment is enter the next number by hand.

Ways around this :
- reindex your table using the appropriate mysql command ;
- run mysqlcheck from the command line

I'm NOT a DB Admin at all I just need this DB to keep all the details of my
Group. The DB is just a very important tool to me!!
I tried to run the 'mysqlcheck' command and I don't know what the output is but
this is what I got ...

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LO Base Problem

Hi All

I've spent today trying to cure this problem.

I have only ONE table in my Database and needed to make the RecordID
field Auto-incrementing. (I forgot when I set it up)

Using the Base Front End it will *NOT* change the setting - as soon as
you save it reverts to 'No'

Using MyAdmin I ran - ALTER TABLE `Members` MODIFY `RecordID` INT
AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY;

and got a positive return from that SQL statement.

This is the only Primary Key and there are no other Auto-Incrementing
fields.

But when I go back into my Database with the Base Front End the RecordID
is still marked as 'No Auto-Increment' and still will not change!!

What am I doing wrong and how do I urgently fix this??

Thanks for any pointers.

Did you attribute PRIMARY KEY status to the new field that you created?
Did you recreate any references (FOREIGN KEYS) to other tables ?

I deleted the old Primary key and marked the new field as Primary

If you didn't, then by deleting your original RecordID field, you
probably deleted the primary key and/or any references as well, and in
all likelihood that is the reason why the forms that relied on that key
to be set no longer work.

In which case should I rather export my data out and start again?? My
feeling is this might be the best and quickest way to go.

Thanks for the help.

[libreoffice-users] LO Base Problem

2015-02-18 Thread Ian Whitfield

*Hi All*

I have been rebuilding/revamping my Database over the past few weeks and
everything has been going great.

I'm using LO 4.3.5.2 and MySQL 5.1.73 on PClinuxOS (latest).

Yesterday I found I had not set my Keyfield (RecordID) to Auto Increment
so I set a new field with phpMyAdmin called 'id'. And this is now
working fine and Auto incrementing. I deleted the old RecordID field.

Now many of my fields are greyed out in the Form and will not accept
input and all my drop-down boxes are inactive.

I created a new temporary Form (using the Wizard) and it works fine and
displays all fields. But as soon as I replace a field with a drop-down
or Combo Box box that box becomes inactive again and is greyed out and
will not display the options.

I've looked everywhere in the field properties but can find no obvious
cause.

Anyone have any ideas please?? Thanks.

[libreoffice-users] MySQL - LO Base question.

2015-01-23 Thread Ian Whitfield

Hi All

I have been running a MySQL Database with LO Base as a front-end for
some time now -

and VERY successfully indeed compared to the built-in engine in LO Base!!
(My OpSys is PClinuxOS 32-bit)

For a variety of reasons I decided to rebuild my system last week. I
have a back-up of my Database as a CSV file and have completely wiped
the hard drive and reinstalled the OpSys and all relevant programs and
copied all my data into /home.

I now need to set-up my Database again but have a question.
(My Database has only one table with about 2500 records and each record
has 80 fields.)

Which is the correct procedure??

1) Set-up the Database in MySQL and create an empty table to import the
CSV into. Then link Base to it.
2) Set-up the Database in MySQL then use LO Base to create the table and
do the import

3) Set-up the Database using LO Base and then import the data.

Thanks for any pointers.

[libreoffice-users] Problem Installing/Updating LO

2014-12-08 Thread Ian Whitfield

*Hi All*

Since I upgraded to LO 4.3.4 I have a problem with LO Manager!!

Whenever I start it it shows the error -

/Please close your package manager 'synaptic' //
// and then run LibreOffice Manager again.//
//
// Exiting../.

Synaptic is _*NOT*_ running - So am unable to update the package.

* I tried re-installing LO Manager - still get the error.
* Then I 'Completely Removed' all LO files with Synaptic and
re-installing LO with but still get the same error.
* I then removed the hidden .config/libreoffice files and reinstalled
the Manager but still get the same error.

I'm now stuck with no LO on my system at all!!

My system runs PClinuxOS (latest) 32-bit.

Any suggestions please??

Going in the other direction I tried out Komodo but gave that up as it

Thanks all.

Well it looks as if the PClinuxOS version of LO has omitted or taken out
this function. No matter which way I open the file I get _NO_ option in
'View' that has anything to do with HTML!!
I even tried a 'Save as selecting HTML and still no luck. (Although
doing this changed the names of my images in the code to long
miscellaneous number and letter strings!!??!!)

So I'm having to look around I know I can use a plain Text Editor
but I was hoping for something a little better to help with the editing
- like colour coding and selectable Tags etc. I can live without
WISIWYG. I'm currently evaluating Komodo!!

That is my point. That is why Base needs to make setting up an external

to do mariadb or mysql external db instead of just HSQL or Firebird?

Dave,

BIG +1 (or rather +100)

I think this is a MUST!! It took me a couple of years to puzzle out what
was wrong, (Embedded vs External), and then a few weeks to get it all to
work - very little info available - all I could do was step-by-step with
the Forum.

But once you get it all working the difference is amazing. One year down
the line and not one crash or one piece of data lost!!!

Thanks Brian!! The dot separating the arguments was finger trouble

I think I've tracked down the problem but not the answer

My full statement is - =IF(H44=AUG,Paid.D21,)

Paid.D21 is the value I want to insert if the month is correct.
H44 contains the month, ie AUG - and this seems to be the problem. It is
a pull-down list of months.
If I enter the month by hand the IF statement works but with it being a

Hopefully this problem gets fixed in 4.3. Alternatively, I'll use a

My hope is that I can use LO Base as the front end for a more robust

One word of advice based on experience:

Avoid use of the built in database.

Use a proper client-server RDBMS. Preferrably PostgreSQL, as it's
reliable and the driver comes with LO.

Otherwise you *will* regret it the day your data has gone to Nirvana.

[libreoffice-users] LO Base/MySQL questions

2014-02-07 Thread Ian Whitfield

Hi All

I've been using the Base/MySQL combination since mid-last year now and
it is fantastic!! It is much faster, never crashes or freezes and just
works the way it is supposed to. I can definitely recommend it to
anyone!! (In my opinion this should be the standard and HSQL should be
dropped)

Now I have a couple of questions...

1) Where does MySQL store the Database? (I think it's in the root somewhere)
2) Is it easy to move it into the /home directory?
3) Where do I find the LO front-end form?
4) If I copy these two files to another machine will I be able to get
the Database running on this second machine?

Side question

I have a couple of graphics/photos in each record - Is it possible to
'Link' these instead of embedding them so that if you up-date a photo it
will automatically update in the Database? If this is possible will it
effect Base at all? (faster, slower etc)

Thanks for any help

Re: [libreoffice-users] LO Base/MySQL questions

Sorry All

I'm running PClinuxOS (latest) and LO 4.1.2.3 and MySQL 5.1.55

A MySQL 'expert' was telling me recently that HSQL is only meant to be a
prototyping utility and should *NEVER* be used for any proper work - -
interesting!!??

I can confirm that when it crashes it takes everything with it so you
have to backup every time you make change. This is what forced me to MySQL.

Thanks again

[libreoffice-users] Using the TOC/Index function.

Hi all

I've been looking for a way to index my monthly Journal I edit in Scribus.

I have managed to get the Scribus function working, (after a battle),
but two problems remain.

1) In all my Paragraph Styles the 'Fill Character' is greyed-out!!
How do I activate this?

2) The created Index is in page order and not Alphabetical order.
Can this be changed?

[My Scribus version is 1.4.3 on PClinuxOS 2013.08]

Thanks for any help.

Re: [libreoffice-users] LO Base Sub Forms

Hi All

I've had some success at last!!

Using Shane Piper's Tutorial at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcudVETPePY I have got my sub-Forms
working fine.

My last problem was with Opening a Form with a Button and again Shane
has a Tutorial on this at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Zmd-zidIvg

But I have been unable to get it to work on LO 4.1.1.2.
Today I started my old machine running LO 3.6.5.2 and it works fine on
that machine!!!

(Both machines running PClinuxOS)

The Macro is ...

REM * BASIC *
Sub OpenStoryForm
const sNewDocumentName = Database Name.Form Name
oNewFormDocument =
ThisDatabaseDocument.FormDocuments.getbyname(sNewDocumentName).open

End Sub

We have tried with and without the Database Name and with and without
the '.' between the two -

but no difference. Nothing happens at all when you click on the Button.

Has anyone seen this or knows of a reason for this?
I'm thinking of dropping back to LO 4.0 and see if it works on that.

Thanks for any info

[libreoffice-users] LO Base Sub Forms

2013-10-15 Thread Ian Whitfield

Hi All

I'm still stuck with LO Base Sub Forms!! I've been at this for some
time, off and on, but over the past few months I have been very busy
converting, editing and checking/updating my DB to now run on MySQL.

I must say it is a GREAT improvement!!

OK - My OpSys is PClinuxOS 2012-10. LO 4.1.1.2, MySQL 5.1.55

I have three tables in my DB - 'Members', 'Story', 'eMails'.
I have one Main Form Members (that references the 'Members Table) AND
contains a Sub Form eMail (that references the 'eMail' Table). Also on
the Main Form is a Button that should pop-up, over the Main Form, a
Story Form that references the Story table).

All the individual Tables and Forms work well on their own - BUT ...

The eMail Sub Form does not link to the individual Members record
and cycle with each record so I can not add info to this Sub Form that
will be linked with the correct record.

The Button does not work at all!!

I have worked on this so many times off and on that I'm now rather
confused on how to go about it or what I did before.

My 'eMails' Table contains the fields - MessageID, Date, In/Out, Title,
Message. ID (My Foreign Key)

My 'Story' Table contains the fields - StoryID, Story, ID (My Foreign Key)

If I remember correctly I created the eMail Sub Form at the time I
laid out the new Data Base and under the Button properties I currently
have When pressed - Standard.Story.OpenForm (document, Basic)

Can someone help me out of this mess???

Thanks for ANY help.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Label Printing in LO Writer {SOLVED]

2013-10-03 Thread Ian Whitfield

Thanks to all for the input - appreciated!!

Pedro contacted me directly and has put me right and I now have it
working 100%.

He picked up my error and said The trick is that the 'Pitch' means the
label width PLUS any following space whereas I was putting in only the
gap between the labels, (which was zero). As I said once you get this
right it works perfectly!!

I still think the Titles of the fields could be improved as could the
help file - which could also use a better graphic to illustrate the values.

I agree that Scribus is an overkill but it was - at the time - my only
other option. I tried using tables in LO but getting everything lined-up
correctly was a nightmare!! In the end though it would work.

Thanks to all - The Forum never ceases to amaze me!!!

The Pushbutton on the Members Form has the event -
Mouse Button Pressed - Standard.Story.OpenForm .

On Clicking on the Button in the Members Form I get the error -

So yesterday afternoon I came up with a Workround!! I converted all the

you do get more options if you need them.

All is working fine now. Just an idea that worked for me, in case anyone

Yes - I do have an ID Field (Record_No).

suitable workround.

With my latest problem with 'Splits' and then vanishing Tab thanks to

I found my Tabs again - during me playing with Splits it seems that
the entire Tab system had been compressed totally to the left and was
all but invisible except for a small un-noticed Bar. Only by

[libreoffice-users] LO Calv - Vertical Split

2013-06-17 Thread Ian Whitfield

Hi All

I have LO 3.6.5.2 on PCLOS 2013

Is it possible to do the following in Calc??

I have two list of names (and other data) side-by-side in a Spreadsheet
and I want to Split the Spreadsheet vertically to show the LH part on
the left and the RH part on the right.

This I can do but the two parts don't scroll vertically independently,
there is only ONE Scroll Bar.
So they remain in sync!! (What I need to do is scroll the RH part,
without the LH part moving to find a match in the two lists)

The Horizontal Split works like this with two Scroll Bars for each part.

Is there a way of doing this Vertically??

Thanks for any help

Thanks Regina

That DOES in fact work and will do for me - but I still don't understand
why the Horizontal and Vertical Splits don't work the same??? It would
be much easier to work this way as there is no separate window sizing
and lining-up to do!!

ANOTHER PROBLEM - Don't know if this is to do with me experimenting with
Splits but my Tabs have vanished from the bottom of my Spreadsheet!!!
I've looked and can find no way to get them back??? (If I open a NEW
Spreadsheet they are still there), so it must be just on my current SS
that they have vanished. Any idea???

Thanks for the help - appreciated!!

[libreoffice-users] LO Calc - Find in a column

2013-06-07 Thread Ian Whitfield

Hi All

Is it possible to get Calc to search/Find in a specific column??

I have a three column list of names, (A=First, B-Surname, C=Former
Name), with about 3000 entries and want to get the Search function
(CTRL-F) to look in just the specific column related to the Search. I
have tried to pre-select the column, (right-click), but the Search

Select a column, then Find Replace (CTRL+H), and make sure the
Current Selection Only option is selected within More Options. You
may also use regular expressions if you wish.

But after the first 'find', the selection is cleared, therefore it
will not be possible to find second occurance in that selection.

LO 4.0.3.3 / Win7

All of the above seems to be correct!! The best 'Work around' I've
come-up with is to select 'Find and Replace' but pick 'Find all' and it
then Marks all the finds in the right column!!

That works for me.

Thanks a lot.

[libreoffice-users] LO Base/MySQL Backup??

2013-05-27 Thread Ian Whitfield

Hi All

I'm now using the MySQL back-end (5.1.55) with LO Base (3.6.5.2) as my
front-end - all on PCLOS 2013.

I've been messing around since late last year getting this all right,
(with lots of GREAT help from the Forum!!)

My question now is - Where does MySQL store the Database and how do I
track it down to make a backup?? Because of all my messing around I
have several different files in the system that may be the right one but
I'm not sure which is which.

I lost my whole Database at the beginning of the year when I
re-installed my OpSys so DON'T want that to happen again and need a
reliable backup method.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks a lot

Is there a way for a Query to do this BUT only list each Country Once??

This resulted in ...

This worked 100%!! So thanks very much. It does bring up two 'Blank'

Then Double-Click on the highlighted Field to display Properties
Select Font Style as required. Save Form

Open in normal mode and whatever you enter in the field will have the

Hi :)
That is a good question.

Ultimately the Tables 'should' be in MySql (or whichever back-end you are
using). One thing i don't know is if you can use the nice GUI front-end in
Base to create the Tables and find the Tables are automatically in the external
back-end. If it does work that way then it greatly reduces complexity by
hiding the complexity away from the Database Designer.

Ian, Alex, Dan, anyone any idea?

I have sent my procedure to Rounak off-list and replied to a couple of
his questions.

AFAIK once you have got ONE Table in MySQL and Linked to it you
control everything with Base and any new tables created are in MySQL.

At least that's what I see here!!*

Re: [libreoffice-users] Base data-loss and other problems

2013-05-10 Thread Ian Whitfield

Hi All

Tom says ...

I'm fairly sure that quite a few people have had troubles with the internal
back-end that were solved by 'just' moving to an external back-end. I vaguely
remember someone even suffering data-loss using the embedded/internal back-end.
Was there a bug-report? Should people be encouraged to stick with the
internal/embedded back-end or warned off from it?

And Hank replied ...

My experience with the embedded database in Base has convinced me to move
to an external back-end. I have had several instances of data loss
particularly during sessions of heavy data input.
While I'm in the process of moving my database to an external H2 database,
I still use the embedded database carefully, however. I backup the embedded
database before adding data, sparingly or working with the Report Writer.
Both of these activitie have resulted in data loss in the past. I still
like Base as a front end, however.

I have to agree with you 200% Tom - and if some people don't like it -
too bad!!

IT'S TRUE!! - The 'Embedded engine/Base Front End' combination is a
disaster!! I have been using Base for about 7 years now and had nothing
but problems. It's slow, crashes all the time, freezes etc etc and
FREQUENTLY takes the data file with it when it crashes. The only
recourse is to back-up all the time, (several times each session), so
that you can get back at your data and be prepared to enter stuff more
than once during a busy session.

Because of this I HAVE LOST and/or had to re-enter data time and time
again!!

This is supported by Hank above I see, (and I'm sure many others)!!

Late last year I converted to MySQL as the Backend and Base as the Front
End. WHAT A DIFFERENCE As I said to people it's like getting out of
your old broken-down, unreliable Beetle and driving around in the latest
Rolls Royce!! Solid, fast, never crashes and is just fantastic!!

I'm currently running BOTH set-ups, on two different machines
side-by-side, for cross checking purposes and the difference is
startling when you do this. The one is slow and plodding, (and still
crashes), and the other just works - and fast!!

IMHO the current engine in Base should be dropped, (or fixed), and a
change made to make stand-alone Base of any serious use.
I saw recently a mention of wanting to do this and change top Firebird!!
(??)

For now I'm VERY happy with my 'MySQL/Base combination!!

Best wishes

So - That leaves me now with two questions ...

1) Dan - can you give me an address/link for the Base Tutorial by
Mariano Casanova you mention??

2) Alex - I have checked my DB with MyAdmin and I'm on MySQL 5.1.55 and
