I run Xubuntu 22.04.3 LTS.

I updated from the link sent out from LO announcing V 7.6.2.

The 7.6 install went to /opt/libreoffice7.6, with the soffice binary
links in /usr/local/bin:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 29 Sep 29 19:38 /usr/local/bin/libreoffice ->
/usr/local/bin/libreoffice7.6
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 35 Sep 29 19:39 /usr/local/bin/libreoffice7.6
-> /opt/libreoffice7.6/program/soffice

I did leave 7.5 installed at the time I ran into this issue.

I never use the main menu links to Office -> LibreOffice... - I mostly
use a keyboard shortcut which maps to /usr/local/bin/libreoffice,
which I keep up to date on the link destination.

I use Thunar's Properties links in the file details to adjust between
minor revision levels of LO files (and Word/Excel/PowerPoint files) as
needed - every minor or major revision change.

I did solve the issue by re-verifying the links to make sure they were
correct (one was not), uninstalling 7.4 and 7.5 with Synaptic, and
logout-login.

All is well. I must have slipped up somewhere along the way.

Thanks to all who responded - much help.

Best wishes,

Mark

[libreoffice-users] LO version 7.6 shows 7.5.5.2

2023-09-28 Thread MR ZenWiz
I updated all my LO installs to use 7.6.2 and verified my links and
Thunar "open with"s to ensure they go to the 7.6 install.

However, they all show 7.5.5.2 when I click -> About.

What's going on here?

Thanks.

[libreoffice-users] Relatively new behavior (in 7.2.7)

2022-08-13 Thread MR ZenWiz
I've noticed recently that the way the Find (Edit->Find or ^F) feature
works in LO 7.2.7 is different - it treats the Find panel as a
separate window without actually giving you a separate window, and
won't let you do something else, like exit the search, without
dismissing the panel.

It does allow an escape to dismiss the panel IFF the focus is still in
the panel and I'm not trying to do something outside the panel or have
already typed .

Am I alone in detesting this new "feature?" Am I wrong in seeing this as new?

It makes getting out of the search more difficult than it used to be,
without the (previous) actual sub-window that makes it clear (and easy
to dismiss) that I am not in the same place as outside the search.

I use Word now for my book writing (because LO is still not even close
to 100% compatible).

However, for almost all my spreadsheets and other writing, I prefer LO
because I'm used to it.

This "feature" drives me up the wall. It makes using "Find and
Replace" (^H) a more attractive option.

Is it worth a bug or should I find a way to adapt?

[libreoffice-users] Spell check broken in 7.3.2

2022-04-05 Thread MR ZenWiz
I have some documents that contain certain special wods (I write epic
fantasy novels and create words that I use in the books), and I tried
to do a number of things with these regarding the spell-checker:

1) I tried to delete my old 'stanard.dic', but it keeps coming bak on
its own as if I never said to delete it.

2) I added a new custom dictionary with a different name, and that
seemed to work.

3) However, when I run the spekk checker, after a few words I add to
the new custom dictionary, if I click "Ignore Once", it wants to
resume and won't let me go any further. I have to quiet the spell
check and start over. At this rate it would take me weeks to go
through one document.

I haven't run a full spell-check on the book recently, but it never
behaved like this before.

This is a .docx file - could that be art of it? 7.3 was supposed to be
more compatible with MSO, not less.

WTF???

Mark

[libreoffice-users] Quote marks

2021-08-06 Thread MR ZenWiz
I have an ODT document in which I have specified the quotes to be
straight quotes (as opposed to the curly opening-and-closing "matched"
set).

For some reason I can't explain, any new quotes inserted in the
document show up as curly quotes, not straight.

The only way I can seem to get them right is to copy ones already in
the doc and paste them. Those come out right, but I'm baffled why
this isn't working.

I have gone into Tools -> AutoCorrect -> AutoCorrect Options ->
Localized Options and set both single and double quotes for the
straight quote marks, and it seems to have no effect.

This used to work, which is one of the things I really liked about it.

What am I missing?

LO 7.1.5 running on Xubuntu 20.04.

Thanks.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Strange new behavior in LO Calc

Further update:

I happened to copy my MFU spreadsheet to my laptop, which is running LO 7.0.4.2.

The problem I'm seeing in 7.2.0 of not remembering previous column

which) as the default and fill-in option works fine in 7.0.4.2.

I think it may be a bug and I'll gather the necessary data and submit
a bug when I get a spare minute or fifteen...

Thanks.

[libreoffice-users] Can't edit a paragraph style anymore

2021-04-21 Thread MR ZenWiz
I have written a number of novels using Writer, currently running LO
7.1 (on Xubuntu 20.04)..

All the chapter headers are modified 'header 3' style paragraphs with
numbering turned on and the word "Chapter" preceding the number.

Unfortunately, when I try to save this in either .DOC or .DOCX format,
the "Chapter #" piece is outdented so the actual title starts at the
left margin, which is not an acceptable format for publishers or even
editors to read/publish. It also looks really screwy.

When I went in to edit the style, there is nowhere I can see/find such
that the "Chapter" part can be edited or removed.

How do I do that?

I tried looking in LO Help, but I'm not even sure how to query for
this feature that used to be there.

Any suggestions that work would be most welcome.

Thanks.

[libreoffice-users] 7.1 Writer no longer appears to remember last cursor position

2021-02-11 Thread MR ZenWiz
I upgraded to 7.1 (on Xubuntu 20.04) recently and noticed that it no
longer appears to remember the last position I was editing the next
time I open the file.

I have a list of items I add to daily. With 7.1, when I open it for
editing, instead of coming up at the end of the file, as it did up
through 7.0, it now goes to a fixed position somewhere in the middle
of the file.

I changed nothing about the file and I didn't see any options to
control this. I have the authorship properties of the file set and
they remain unchanged as well.

What's up?

Thanks.

[libreoffice-users] Odd libreoffice directory under /usr/lib

2020-09-05 Thread MR ZenWiz
While looking into the issue I reported about LO 7 not starting
properly (which is SOLVED, thank you), I noticed another anomaly.

While chasing after the JRE load error that the --nologo option seems
to provoke, I discovered the following strange situation:

$ loc javaldx
/opt/libreoffice6.4/program/javaldx
/opt/libreoffice7.0/program/javaldx
/usr/lib/libreoffice/program/javaldx

("loc" is an alias I use to run "locate" with certain exclusions and
piped through more - not a problem.)

I can understand the /opt locations, but the /usr/lib location seemed
pretty strange to me since LO doesn't install under /usr anymore. The
dates on the files under /usr/lib/libreoffice/program (the only entity
in /usr/lib/libreoffice) were all in 2019.

I moved all of these files into a zip file and there does not appear
to be any impact on my ability to run LO.

Can I just delete those old /usr/lib files? I believe they are the
last remnant of an older installation, maybe the default that comes
with Xubuntu (which I usually uninstall because I like the newer code
better).

Thanks.

oosplash is an ELF binary that actually runs (all?) the LibreOffice
programs. While that seems obscure enough for me, the problem (not
finding a java runtime system) has nothing to do with the symlinks I
have set up for my keyboard shortcuts so they work independent of
where LO actually lives on my machine.

I don't know why this is happening, but I do know it has been going on
at least since LO 5, and there have been many many comments on this
email list about it being a bug, to which I agree.

I have not seen any errors or other impact of this problem - maybe I
don't use the JRE enough, or the errors are invisible for everything I
am doing, and I find it disturbing that this keeps getting reported
and not fixed.

That said, I consider my problem resolved - no need for further input
here. If someone wants to comment on the JRE issue, please post in a
new thread, don't complicate this one.

Thanks.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LO 7.0 fails to start with --nologo

2020-09-03 Thread MR ZenWiz
Let's not make this a silly war of who should have done what.

Update on my original problem: I added a symlink to oosplash in
/usr/bin and, other than the java runtime error, it now comes up and
runs just fine - writer and calc (the two I mainly use).

I'm not sure what the java problem is, but it's not impacting my work.
It would be nice to see it fixed someday.

[libreoffice-users] LO 7.0 fails to start with --nologo

2020-09-03 Thread MR ZenWiz
I saw this error when I tried to start LO 7.0 Calc from the command line:

$ /usr/bin/libreoffice --calc --nologo
/usr/bin/libreoffice: 191: exec: /usr/bin/oosplash: not found

I located oosplash and symlinked it to /usr/bin and got this:

$ sudo ln -s /opt/libreoffice7.0/program/oosplash /usr/bin/oosplash
$ /usr/bin/libreoffice --calc --nologo
Warning: failed to launch javaldx - java may not function correctly
ERROR 4 forking process

This makes 7.0 completely unusable for me. What changed in the Java
support? I didn't see anything directly related to this in the
release notes.

Suggestions?

Thanks.

[libreoffice-users] Inverting a whole column

2020-06-29 Thread MR ZenWiz
I have spreadsheets from my financial institutions (for tax purposes).
Some of them do the deposits as positive and the debits as negative,
and others do the reverse.

Is there an easy way to multiply an entire column by -1 so I can make
them all fit a uniform convention?

What I've done before is convert the spreadsheets to .csv, use a shell
script to invert the chosen column and then convert back to .ods.
This is really clunky.

Thanks in advance.

[libreoffice-users] Really bad file open interface for LO 6.4.1

2020-03-03 Thread MR ZenWiz
I've been using LO 6.4.1 on Xubuntu 18.04.4 for about a week now, and
for the most part it seems to be an improvement over 6.3, with two
glaring deficiencies:

1. The file open dialogue is slower - it used to take a fraction of a
second, now it takes one-two seconds. Not a biggie, but
disconcerting.

2. The operation of the dialogue is horrible. With 6.3 and before,
the cursor showed up in the file name panel, which is the single most
important piece of data to input. Instead, it now shows up in the
folder selector panel and it takes either a mouse navigation and extra
click, or EIGHT s to get to the file name panel.

When I am opening a file, I expect LO to preselect (and allow me to
change later, not right away) the directory (based on the default
setting) and I have not even checked to figure out what the other
seven tabs are for (I don't care), and give me immediate access to the
file name panel. This is intuitively what a user expects when they
want to open a file - to input the name.

Now we have to navigate to the file name panel and then enter it.

This is just plain wrong.

[libreoffice-users] Can't print directly with the toolbar print icon

2019-10-15 Thread MR ZenWiz
In LO 6.3.2.2, I had some problems with my profile and restarted with
one imported from my work that works.

However, now the print icon on the toolbar no longer prints directly
to the default printer, which is what I want and used to have. It
brings up the print options menu, which I don't want (^P or
File->Print can do that).

I looked in Tools->Options and could not find a setting for this. I
also checked the Printer Settings menu (which is also in the
Tools->Options menus).

Where might that be?

Thanks.

A new profile helps a lot. This specific problem went away.

Now the problem is that I lost all my settings. I imported a profile
from work, which was quite similar to my original and didn't have the
problem, but I have to make a lot of adjustments.

This is minor compared to the original problem.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Strange behavior in Writer 6.3.1

2019-09-28 Thread MR ZenWiz
Update:

I just upgraded to LO 6.3.2 and the same issue remains.

FYI, I don't use the file manager to open my files. I use a keyboard
shortcut that starts up LO Writer, then File -> Open Recent or ^O
(File ->Open). In both instances, the file opened on startup is
neither replaced nor closed but remains open and must be closed
separately.

This does NOT happen with LO Calc - if I open this with a (different)
keyboard shortcut, the do eithe ran open recent or open (exitsing)
command, the untitled spreadsheet opened on startup is gone once the
recent or existing file is opened. This is the old behavior with LO
6.2, and whether this is desirable or not, it should be consistent
across the whole suite.

I say it is undesirable to have the untitled new file require separate
closure when an existing file is opened. This is new behavior and
goes against 30+ years of most word processors not working that way.

[libreoffice-users] Strange behavior in Writer 6.3.1

2019-09-24 Thread MR ZenWiz
I recently upgraded to LO 6.3.1 (from 6.2.6? - I always wait for the
.1 update before upgrading).

I noticed a new issue with Writer. In 6.2 and below, when I opened a
blank document and selected File -> Open Recent -> , the file I
chose to open replaced the new blank file, either in the same window,
or in a new window and the old one was closed for me.

Also, when I opened a new Writer document and selected File -> Open ->
(or O), the same thing happened.

In either case I only had one window open at this time.

Since 6.3.1 came out, the new blank document window persists, making
it an annoying extra step to close that unnecessary LO window since
the blank new document does not go away on its own.

This does not happen if I open a blank Calc window and select either
of the above two options - the blank spreadsheet window disappears
once I open the selected one of my choice.

This seems like a bug, unless it's a new option I have not seen. I
haven't done an exhaustive search of the options, but I didn't see one
in the General options, Writer options or Load/Save options. I did
see a 'show tips on startup' option which is checked by default. I
have unchecked that in every app I've opened, but that doesn't seem to
stop them. Is that another bug?

I'm most concerned with the persistence of the empty new document
window once something else is opened - that's not right.

Thanks.

[libreoffice-users] LO Writer 6.2.5 Reopen cursor fails to return to last point of prior edit

I believe this started showing up in LO 6.2.4. When I open a .odt

[libreoffice-users] Page number messed up in LO Writer 6.2.1/2 and 6.1.5

2019-04-10 Thread MR ZenWiz
I've been LO Writer for a long time for, among other things, a few
novels I am writing.

Just now I noticed that the page number field in the header no longer
contains the page number itself, it contains the shaded text "Page
Numbers".

This is new as of LO 6.2.1 and 6.2.2, and kind of defeats utterly the
ability to use this field for page numbering.

I tried deleting it and re-inserting, both with Insert -> Page Number
and Insert -> Field -> Page Number. Same result.

I have attached a brand new .ods document with the same problem - all
I did was insert the page number in a fresh header. See also the
attached screen image.

For S, I reinstalled LO 6.1.5, but it does the same thing with the
older files, and also with a brand new file.

I'm running this on Xubuntu 18.04.2 in a VB VM (here at work - I'll
check again when I get home).

[libreoffice-users] Prompt to save when no changes made with LO 6.1.4

I tried that, but there's something I don't quite follow and the
borders idea looked great -until I opened the file with Word to see
what it looked like. after that, it was completely messed up and I
had to start all over.

Why check it with Word? Because that's what everyone else who will
see this uses. LO is fabulous and Word is so-so, but so-so x millions
of users vs. the paltry few who use LO takes the cake every time. (I
wold have used the word "trump," but I'd rather not)

If i knew how to do this in Word, I would do that, but I'm just not a WP expert.

Not quite sure what all that means, but I tried using the top and left
sidebar as images, and the "left" sidebar refused to anchor on the
left - when I moved it, it jumped to the right and refused to budge.

That was what I tried first. For some reason, when I pasted the
copied text, it kept its own format and splattered all over the left
side column.

I appreciate the input, but I confess, after using LO since it came
out and OO before that, I don't know it well enough for this kind of
fancy work, and I don't have the time to set aside to learn all the
nice features the Writer has.

I just wrote up the doc as a straight text document with nice if
boring formatting. It's easy to read and doesn't give me headaches.

Maybe someday when I need to get fancier

Thanks again. Sorry to have bothered the list.

[libreoffice-users] How do I restrict a Writer page not to overwrite part of the background image

2018-09-07 Thread MR ZenWiz
I have a background image that consume the top and left side of every
page in the document, which is what I want.

However, I can't seem to expand the left margin so that it sits inside
the image frame and make it stick when I paste the clipboard contents
on the page. The paste spills all over the left side image.

What's the best way to do this?

I'm using LO 6.06 on Xubuntu 18.04.

[libreoffice-users] Slide show sizes

2018-02-22 Thread MR ZenWiz
I got a .pptx file today that I downloaded and made some slight
modifications to.

The original download size was 4.8MB.

After modifications using Impress, the size blossomed to 24.9MB.

I loaded it into MS PP nad saved it, and it shrank back down to 6.4MB.

Why did Impress blow it up so large and yet PP was able to shrink it

I'd be happy to file a bug, except I don't see a bug report option or
link at TDF's web site, and my freedesktop bugzilla login doesn't list
LO as a product against which to tile a bug.

I am running LO 5.4.4.2 on Xubuntu 16.04, and I have seen this problem
many times in the past.

This particular problem I described in my original post:

I wanted to set up a document with an image as the
background. The help search returned a section of Backgrounds ->
Colors/Images and it says to click on Format -> Page and select the
Backgrounds tab.

There isn't one. There is a Colors tab, but it's
not clear what that really means.

I'll report every one I find from now on. If I had a link to the most
appropriate bugzilla site, I'd be happy to report these there.

Thanks.

I found it. It's not hard to find.

My complaint is about the help function not having the right information.

What kind of help is that? (Big hint: NOT.)

[libreoffice-users] Help hopeless

2017-12-23 Thread MR ZenWiz
I've noticed over the last several releases that the help provided via
the main menu bar is hopelessly inaccurate.

E.g., today I wanted to set up a document with an image as the
background. The help search returned a section of backgrounds ->
colors/images and it says to click on Format -> Page and select the
Backgrounds tab. There isn't one. There is a Colors tab, but it's
not clear what that really means.

There have been other such inaccuracies I've seen in the past, though
in my haste I've never documented them but just plowed ahead and
blundered through.

In a professional production, help menus should match the actual
features of the application. LibreOffice can (and should) do better.

I should know by now (and not forget) to google first. I did not know
that Win Installer can only handle one at a time. Didn't think of it,

[libreoffice-users] Problem installing 5.4.2 on Win 10

2017-10-15 Thread MR ZenWiz
I have a new computer (for my church - I'm the tech guy), a Dell
Inspiron runnign Win 10.

I downloaded LO 5.4.2 and tried to install it, but every time I start
the installation, it tells me there's an install already in progress
and it refuses to run properly.

LO is not installed.

What do I need to remove to get this to function? Is it a registry
key or a file somewhere?

(I never have this problem on Linux...)

Thanks.

[libreoffice-users] Cursor position lost every time file is closed in 5.4.1

2017-09-20 Thread MR ZenWiz
This used to be an occsaional problem with 5.3, usually just the first
few times I opened a file.

Now it seems that every time I open a document, new or one I've been
editing for a long time, it never remembers the cursor position and
always comes up at the head of the file.

Is this a feature change or is there a switch I need to set? I found
nothing in help.

Thanks.

However, if I change the paragraph style by itself, that does not
appear to change any of the existing paragraphs in that style. I want

How so?

[libreoffice-users] Can't set the default printer

2017-07-24 Thread MR ZenWiz
For the first time in a very long time, I am in a position of having
to use Windows 7 at work. I installed LO 5.3.4 for use with my
personal documents (and as many others as I can do without MSO), but
there is a problem.

The default printer on the system is a local industrial laser printer,
but for some reason, LO always defaults to print to "Send to OneNote
2013." This happens both in Writer and Calc.

The strangest part is that when I click on File -> Printer Settings,
the right printer shows up highlighted, with all the others also on
the list. It just tries to print to OneNote instead.

I don't have this problem on any of my Xubuntu personal computers
(desktop or notebook).

What am I missing?

[libreoffice-users] Suggestion for the archive

2016-11-03 Thread MR ZenWiz
I routinely use the LibreOffice archive to download the newer
releases. I started this because for some reason I could not get a
decent response, or sometimes even a connection, to the usual download
sources.

I noticed two things about the archive today.

One is that the font is really small. This makes it more difficult to
read for older folks who don't see quite as well as we used to.

The other suggestion, which is more important, is to have the archive
list the directories in reverse chronological order. That way we
don't have to plow down however many pages it takes to get to the
newest release.

Just a thought or two

credit unions as it is so far superior to the home-grown method I have
been using it's not even funny.

(I know, way late... Cries of "luddite" in the background, etc.)

However, in the .csv file they send, the dollar transactions are all
given as text entries with ($xxx.xx) for negative entries and $xxx.xx
for positive entries. I don't see a way inside calc either to simply
convert that to a currency amount or to strip out the leading
apostrophe/quote mark that inhibits proper evaluation of the field.

I've also run into this with other numeric imports - that leading
quote is a pain that doesn't show in the .csv file and _only_ appears
inside calc.

What I've been doing is loading the .csv file into a text editor,
change those fields and then reload into calc. This is terribly
cumbersome.

I also note that there is no Currency option for columns in the import
wizard. The date fields I can do, but not these.

Finally, when I'm running writer and I tell it to load a recently used
.csv file, it loads that file into the writer, not into calc. I
couldn't find an option for this. My file manager understands that
.csv files are to be opened by calc, why not LO itself?

Any suggestions?

I'm running LO 5.1.2 (just downloaded :-) on Xubuntu 14.04.4 with the
Wily kernel (4.2).

Thanks.

Re: [libreoffice-users] LEBRE VERSION STILL

2015-11-04 Thread MR ZenWiz
Tim,

Thanks for the tip.

I've been using PDFCreator for my Windows boxes for years and am
usually pretty happy with it, but I'll give doPDF a shot.

I work in a mixed environment with an Xubuntu desktop and a Windows
laptop and I don't like having to keep track of all the printer links
for both OSes, so I use PDFs from Windows to print from Linux.

At home, I use PDFs from my Windows VM so I don't need to connect it
directly to a printer (or have it steal my printer when I run the VM).
It's an extra step, but I also get permanent copies of the PDFs for
future reference.

My apologies - I figured it out.

A lot of the recent files were on my flash drive, so when it's not
plugged in, LO can't see them and doesn't list them.

Thanks all.

[libreoffice-users] LO Writer 5 loses recent documents list

2015-09-14 Thread MR ZenWiz
Since I upgraded to LO 5.0.1, I've noticed that the Writer seems to
lose the recent documents list at random.

This morning I edited a document and it had all the ones I've worked
on recently in the list. An hour later, it had only three, none of
which were the one I'd worked on and most of the ones I have worked on
were gone.

What's up with that?

Thanks.

[libreoffice-users] How do I collapse the common fractions in Writer?

2015-06-30 Thread MR ZenWiz
I have been searching for this and I can't seem to find the right setting.

I have three or four installations of LO on various computers. On
some of them, LO Writer automatically converts 1/2, 1/4 and 3/4 into
the symbols for such (½ ¼ ¾). On others, the letters remain
unchanged.

I'm reasonably certain there is a setting for this in one of the
options, but I can't find it in Help and I can't figure out which one
it's supposed to be in the Options lists.

???

Thanks.

[libreoffice-users] FrameMaker conversion

2015-04-14 Thread MR ZenWiz
I run LO 4.4.2 on my Xubuntu 14.04.2 machines (work and home).

I have some old files I created way back in the late 90s that are in
Aldus/Adobe FrameMaker format.

I'd really like to get them into a more suitable, portable format, like ODT.

I tried to have my old FM create PDFs, but that piece does not work
and the best I can get is postscript files that a) don't really print
right and b) don't convert into ODT easily. Even .DOC format or .RTF
would be better than the FM internal format that nothing else can
read.

I can do it manually, though I'd really rather not, so...

Is there any app or plugin that does this?

Thanks.

[libreoffice-users] FrameMaker file conversion

Is there any way that LO handles conversion of FrameMaker files into .odt files?

I have a bunch of old (FM 4) FM files that I'd like to convert, but I
don't see an option in LO Writer for this.

Alternatively, I have all of them also in .ps format, but if I use

 Hi

you can customize the toolbar from Tools/Customize/Toolbar (Standard): here
you can change/add/remove the commands you need.

 Ciao

Thanks for the pointer, but my issue was more that this changed
unexpectedly (for me) in the latest release. It is a new
inconvenience to the user (me).

This is not the only inconveniencing change I have run into. In all
my old .ODT documents (i.e., those I created before 4.3.1), the
Correct spelling as you type was deselected in 4.3.1 where it used
to be set and I had to re-enable it. (Is there a way to enable it by
default, regardless of the old document settings?)

This kind of inconveniencing the user in subtle ways makes any app
harder to work with and less marketable. Most especially for free
software, backward compatibility is crucial, and when broken, should
be emphasized in some big way. I don't recall seeing these changes in
any announcements or release notes (maybe I missed them...).

Just my $0.02 (worth less every year, I know...).

Thanks.

Tom, I have an idea that there is a find/copy/paste add-on for LO which

Yes, I remember something like that as well, but I do not remember what it
was or what version of LO it was used with.

That would be real handy for book authors and editors.

Piers Anthony, a highly regarded SciFi and Fantasy writer, used Fedora and
LO for writing his books. He is in his mid 70's now so he has scaled back
to 1 or 2 books per year, instead of 3 or more. He has created macros to
help him do the work he needs and uses a different keyboard layout than the
standard QWERTY keyboard. In one of his Author's Notes, he stated that he
needed a package that worked with his type of keyboard and had the ability
to create/use the types of macros he needs for making his writing easier.
He seems to be a big fan of having multiple documents open at the same
time and editing across those documents.

SO, you should be able to find the extension needed for your cross-document
 editing.

[libreoffice-users] Cursor/window focus loss when opening encrypted files from the command line

2014-08-25 Thread MR ZenWiz
I recently installed Xubuntu 14.04 on my home desktop since I have
been using it at work for about 3 weeks and all has gone well there.

However, when I open an encrypted .odt document using the command line
or a shell script, the focus shifts to the password input box for a
fraction on a section and immediately reverts to the starting terminal
window.

This is annoying in part because when I type in the password, it shows
up in the terminal window, which is a huge no-no for security, and in
part because I have to manually shift the focus back to the password
input window.

This should not happen - the password window should grab the focus and
hold it until the password is input.

This does not happen if I start LO directly or through a keyboard
shortcut and then enter the file to open.

Whose bug is it - LO pr Xubuntu? I don't know how to tell.

Thanks.

[libreoffice-users] OO question - problem printing spreadsheet

2014-07-14 Thread MR ZenWiz
I realize this isn't the OpenOffice list, but I haven't used OO since
LO came out.

I have a friend who has a spreadsheet she uses OO to manage on a Win7
(old and really slow) system. She did something to it, she's not sure
what, and a bunch of cells got moved around. I fixed that, but it is
printing really strangely.

Initially it wouldn't print at all until I found the print properties
box to pick what selection to print by default and changed that to
all sheets.

However, when it prints, it prints at about 60% size and the header is
so tiny we can barely read it. I could not find any way to 1) change
the print size of the sheet and have it stick - it defaults bck to 60%
every time we open the file, and 2) get the header to print large
enough to read. It looks like it's about 20% of the size of the rest
of the printed fonts.

She's using OO version 3 (I didn't get the exact revision).

I'm probably going to recommend she upgrade to a new revision of LO
(I'm using 4.2.5 and liking it just fine).

Any suggestions on what might help until then?

Thanks.

running in memory. I'd imagine that there are all sorts of kernel
dependencies where the currently-running kernel and newly-installed kernel
differ. Therefore you'll see lots of adverse effects for the currently
running system which are resolved by getting everything rebased on the
updated kernel. Hence kernel update packages are marked to require a reboot
 as soon as possible.

I've never seen that happen before, but it makes sense.

Now if I knew why the update got stuck running depmod for more than
ten minutes, I'd feel more comfortable. Oh, well.

[libreoffice-users] All TDF files corrupt

2014-06-06 Thread MR ZenWiz
I was running LO writer just now, and suddenly all my files are
corrupt - templates, documents, spreadsheets, everything. I can't

I have LO 4.2.4 running on Xubuntu 12.04 LTS.

My system is in the middle of an upgrade, but I'm not sure how that

Any suggestions?

I can go back to an earlier version, but I've been using 4.2.4 since

More information:

Most of the files I tried to open have not changed in quite a while.
One I was editing earlier today at work and had no trouble with it at
all.

To be sure, I restored a backup copy of the first file I tried to
open, one I saved last night, and magically it, too, is corrupt.

I visually inspected a .csv file and it looks fine. I made a copy and
it opens fine.

So it appears to be limited to .o[dt]? (open document format) files.

However, when I close the files, even the ones it says are corrupt and
the (not corrupted) .csv file, the LO lock files are not getting
removed.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Spell Check Dictionary

There are two answers.

The longest word in any English language is the name of a small town
in Wales - Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyantysiliogogogoch
(see Wikipedia if you're curious about what and where this is). I had
thought it was 56 letters, but this one is 59. Hmm.

The longest word in American English is
pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, aka black lung disease.
 It is 45 letters.

There is a longer word, which is the 85 letter long name of a village
in Africa, but I don't know what that one is (and I'm too lazy to
Google it right now :-).

FWIW.

I'm using 64 bit Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and the Firefox browser if that makes any
difference. I've read all sorts of reasons why the official download might
have stopped working, but none of them make sense to me. Luckily there are
other ways to obtain LO, although it does seem to be just a little risky to
not be getting it from the original source.

Because most of the comments I read seemed to suggest that other people have
no problem with the official page, I just assumed that something was amiss
with my system in particular and ignored advice like try again later and
 the like.

I did that, too, and it never worked. Someone posted the link to the

I can ping the site, but no download luck.

This has always worked before from Chrome directly through the link.

(I accidentally clicked early and also could not get the rpm version -

I also tried to download the current 4.2.0 version - same problem.

Also tried this:

I always do the help download first - it's smaller and gives me a
faster success - when it works. Again, this is for the English Deb
 x86_64 version.

 I tried this:

 $  wget

And that's as far as it gets.

I can ping the site, but no download luck.

This has always worked before from Chrome directly through the link.

(I accidentally clicked early and also could not get the rpm version -
 same problem.)

I also tried to download the current 4.2.0 version - same problem.

 Also tried this:

 $ scp

I vastly prefer to download the files directly.

Is this no longer possible, or is there somewhere these are still available?
