[libreoffice-users] disappearing slider in impress

2020-07-11 Thread anne-ology
Having no problems until once again that slider on the left side decided
to disappear;

then somehow it re-appeared, but now is only 1/2 the length size,
rather than extending the length of the space on the left side,
it's 1/2 the size & is in a floating (?) rather than stable
position.

Please explain what causes this to disappear; & please explain how to
get it back - & now how to get it back to its original size & into its
permanent, rather than floating spot.

   Thanks in advance,
& keep up the good work,

ah, the paper age vs. the computer age ;-)

Although the computer's HD - even the external HDs - can wear out,
the document itself can't;
just be sure you have this - & all others - saved, so if one
begins to fail, you're still able to continue functioning as before.

I have a to-do list in Writer that I update and save at least once a
day. I've had the same document for several months, and have probably
revised and saved it 250 times.

I have had no problem at all with it, but I'm wondering if a document
that has been used and abused that often may be prone to corruption or
damage? Should I consider cut-and-pasting the information into a blank
document on a regular schedule? Or just do the whole thing over from
scratch, also on a regular schedule?

I'm not sure I've *ever* had a LibreOffice document (Writer or Calc)
fail on me, but I'm certain I've never put one through the grinder at
this pace.

Thanks.

You disregard the point, that Draw is a tool for construction of vector
graphics. It is not a tool for painting. So do not blame Draw for not been
able to do, for which it is not designed.

Hi all,

I've never used Draw up to now, but I got a task and thought I could do it
with that. I am reading and viewing tutorials but did not find the method
for the following: how to overlap, combine, or be it called something else,
two objects.

I mean for example: how can I draw a tube that is pushed into a ring. Ok, I
could do it by drawing two tubes, one is above, the other is below the
ring, but can it be done in a simpler and cleverer way?

Thanks: Albert

Anne,

In my curiosity to understand what Italo has been saying, I installed LO
6.0.3 to my Puppy Linux partition, and I now understand it.

All the LO developers have done is move the function from the "Insert >
File..." menu selection to the "Slide > Insert Slides from File..." menu
selection.

Once you click on the new menu option from the Slide menu, you'll be
prompted to select an .odp file, just as we did when we did it through
"Insert > File...". Once you select the file, you'll have the option to
select as many or as few of the slides from the file as you want.

The functionality has not changed. The only change is that it has been
moved from "Insert > File..." to "Slides > Insert Slides from File..."

Like you, I question why such a change was needed, but you can still
obtain the same results with the same number of mouse clicks.

I'd like to be able to use the convenient --convert-to CLI switch on
soffice to convert from Word to PDF. However, I'd like that conversion
to create tagged PDFs, and the default for UseTaggedPDF is false.

A number of PDF export options are listed at
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/API/Tutorials/PDF_export, and after
reading that I tried,

 $ soffice --convert-to pdf:writer_pdf_Export:UseTaggedPDF=true --outdir

But still got untagged PDF in the output file.

Can anyone see what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Anne and all:

As I understood you are working with one Presentation file that is in
cloud and the other that you need copy too.

Why not try to use two tabs in web browser to open each Presentation
file, or use two different web browser to open each file, supposed that you
can't download them and then upload them again. I don't know if these
suggestions work but nothing to lose trying.

With the latest versions of LibreOffice you have two different options
for inserting slides from one presentation into another one, both tested
and working on every platform.

A. You can open two different LibreOffice presentations at the same
time, and switch between them using the Window menu.

When you have two presentations open you can copy and paste slides
between them from the Slide Sorter view:

1. Select multiple slides with the mouse while keeping the Ctrl key pressed
2. Copying them by selecting Edit > Copy or by hitting Crtr+C
3. Switch to the other presentation from Window > Presentation Name
4. Past the slides after the selected slide from Edit > Paste or by
hitting Ctrl+V

B. You can insert multiple slides from another presentation into the
open presentation from Slide > Insert Slide from File...

1. Search and open the source presentation
2. Select any number of slides or the entire presentation
3. Click OK and wait for the process to complete

I have just copied/pasted according to option A and inserted according
to option B 60 slides of an 82 slide presentation into another 142 slide
presentation without any issue.

Although I don't see the need of reverting to an old LibreOffice version
to do the same thing in a different way, you can find old LibreOffice
releases here:

That may work for inserting only one slide, but what Anne wants is to
insert an entire Impress presentation, not just a slide or two. This can
be done with LO 5.1.6.3 (which is what I use), but it apparently is
missing in later versions. I can understand and appreciate Anne's
frustration that a former functionality seems to have been deliberately
removed from the program (unless it has just been moved to another
location on the menu, which nobody seems to have been able to find).

Yes, a person can copy and paste select slides, but that is hardly a
satisfactory answer when she used to be able to insert an entire file
and can no longer do so.

I'm confused as to the flow of the discussion, and I'm not at all sure I
know what the issue is, but I have no problem inserting an entire
Impress presentation into another Impress presentation.

Here's how I do it with LO 5.1.6 on my Linux Mint machine:

First, I open one Impress presentation file. I then make sure that the
"Slide Panel" is visible by clicking on the menu "View", "Slide Panel"

I then click on the slide in the Slide Panel where I want to insert
another Impress presentation, keeping in mind that the inserted
presentation will appear *after* the slide I click on in the Slide
Panel. From my experience, inserting a second presentation only works if
my cursor focus is in the Slide Panel.

Then, on the menu, I click "Insert", "File...", which on my machine is
down toward the bottom of the Insert menu list. From the resulting
dialog box, I select the Impress presentation I want to insert and then
I am presented with another dialog box from which I can select certain
slides from the inserting file. If I want the entire presentation, I
simply click on "Ok," and the file is inserted into the original
presentation file after the slide I had selected in my Slide Panel.

Er, what's a "PP", please? If you get no replies, wouldn't it be sensible
to wonder if people did not understand your request? Do you perhaps mean a
presentation (Impress) document? Or something else?

[sorry, I thought everyone used 'PP' for Power Point presentation or
Impress]

... saving each version then I would place each of these together to save

Why would you create any parts that were not "best"?!

[for the same reason, when writing anything; first, I get the idea down
as quickly as possible, then I add flourish to it, then after a few days, I
return to the piece to edit]

Do you mean that you could edit slides from different presentations into a
single presentation? Surely you can simply copy slides from the Slides
panel in one document and paste them into the Slides panel of the other
document? Doesn't that still work for you?

[yes, it allowed me to insert each PP into one; in fact, that's one of
the main reasons I preferred LO to any of these others.
ok, How can I see the slide panel of the other PP when only the one PP
is open?; are you saying, it's possible to somehow open LO more than once?;
wow, I can't image what this screen would even look like if I had 1/2 dozen
LOs open at one time.]

But this feature seems to be lacking now ...

If you explained how you did it before, someone may be able to comment on
whether your method is still available.

   [hopefully - thank you.]

Yes, I can see how to insert images, ... but not how to insert PPs.
>

Hold on: if a "PP" is a presentation document, you cannot insert an entire
document into something else. Indeed, what other sort of document would you
be trying to insert it into? So a "PP" cannot be a presentation and no-one
will know what you are talking about.

[ah, but it was quite possible in the LO 3:]

If no-one answers your question, surely a good start would be to consider
that you might not have expressed it clearly?

Maybe changing to a Mac wasn't a good idea after all; ...

Oh, you may well be right! Ho, ho!

I trust this helps.

LibreOffice 5.1.6.2 / 5.3.5.2 on Linux Lite.

I wrote a document based on a specific template.
As I did so, I added four new styles to the document.

Is there a way to automatically incorporate these new styles into the
specific template,
such that when I create a new document based on it, the new styles will be
included in it?

Thanks for helping.

LO 5.3.6.1

I'm working with the first of multiple files that will be located on a
Windows 8.1 computer. That computer and my Mac are both hardwired to a
network.

LO seems to have an issue opening the document at the beginning of a work
session.

Start Windows 8.1.

Start OS X.

Wait until the Mac has recognized and connected to 8.1.

Start LO to the Start Center. The file I want is listed, but when I click
on it, I get the message the file does not exist. Even though I know it
does exist.

If I click on Open File, I can then navigate to the W8.1 computer, and
drill down to the folder where the file is and load it.

Even better, I have the folder that contains the file in the Finder's
Sidebar. Click on the folder, it opens and I can load the file I want.

Has anyone else seen this?

To: "users@global.libreoffice.org"

I have a Studio Logic MIDI music keyboard which I have plugged into my PC
via a USB cable. Windows has automatically installed the appropriate
driver/s. I am attempting to read the MIDI input from the keyboard as I
want to see if I can use a Macro to modify the sound before it goes to the
speaker. (Actually I want to try to programmatically mix sine waves like
a Hammond Organ does - it may not be possible, but I'd like to give it a
try!)

I installed a trial version of Device Monitoring Studio, see
https://www.hhdsoftware.com/device-monitoring-studiowhich enables me to
trap the raw data from the keyboard, and I'm able to identify which keys
are pressed or released, and also the keyboard sliders' movements and
slider positions. For my purposes, that is all I need to extract from the
MIDI stream.

I then went on the Web to see if I could find examples of Macro code that
would enable my program to emulate what I had been able to do with Device
Monitoring Studio. It turns out that USB coding is very complex and the
only examples I could find were in C, C++ or Visual Basic, none of which I
have, or have ever worked with.

I then had a look at LibreOffice 5.3 SDK API. I believe that is the API
that Base uses, and over several years I have developed a number of
databases using macros that make calls to the API. One API service I found
was, com.sun.star.io.pipe, which looks as though it might be what I need,
but I don't know if it would work with a USB port, and I could not find any
macro code examples that might point me in the right direction.

So my questions are -
1. Does anyone know if it is possible to read from a USB port using a
LibreOffice macro utilising the API? If so can you point me to some
example code (preferably in Basic)?
2. Failing that, is there a simple application on the market that can read
a USB MIDI stream into a buffer or file? I think Device Monitoring Studio
can do that, but it is expensive and has far more features than I'll ever
need.

Any help in this regard would be much appreciated

Thanks,

Noel

Finding that the file names of images are being displayed
beside or below the images in the html versions. Because
all images are given a caption, we do not want the file names too.

I can remove them by going to each image Properties>Options
and deleting one at a time but this is time consuming when there are
many images - over 100 in one manual. Is there a setting that can
automatically prevent the file names being displayed?

Have looked through the Help but found nothing, did I overlook it?

I find it quite disturbing that someone stating an issue and, perhaps,
asking for help leads to a thread of Windows-bashing... This is
particularly interesting, since I don't remember LibreOffice being a
competitor to Windows - although it seems to have about as many scripting
languages as Windows has [Microsoft] development languages...

In any case, I have run into several issues with the suite on both Windows
(macOS, but let's focus on the former), from Hardware Acceleration and
OpenCL simply not functioning (at all - which is awful on a Notebook on
Battery). To tons of issues with Styles. To epic performance issues on my
Notebook stemming from those awful Liberation Fonts (disappears when I
change font to Times or Arial, etc.). Bad font rendering in the
applications (thin, patchy looking fonts... like something on a low res
PenTile display). And the fact that the apps perform worse than both
Microsoft and Corel WordPerfect Office (both of which I own, so I can do
1:1 comparison on Windows).

I won't even talk about Linux, because that is clearly off-topic, and I'm
not sure how you people have extended this to Microsoft and Microsoft
Windows. Is there nothing better to do with your time, and do you actually
wish this to be a place where people can have civil discussion and give
feedback without fear of the "Tear Down the Competition" reflex you're
exhibiting, here?

For fixing Permissions in Windows, you can go to the top level and simply
propagate the permission changes down. It's not difficult. It's worked
that way for about 2 decades (since at least NT4).

Unless you somehow deleted LO, then it should still be on your
machine with all its files intact.

What machine do you have?; if a MsFt WIN product, then go to the
'start' ... then either
  (1) 'search' for one of the files which were in LO ... this will
lead you to where its located;
  (2) click on 'computer' then 'app data' then 'roaming' ... scroll
down to LO's file;

   if you have a Mac. then click on 'finder' then check 'apps';

if another machine, 'search' for the files may be the easiest.

Unless you deleted these files then your files should be wherever
you placed them.

Hello Libre Office,

I hope you can help me. I went to use Libre Office (as above) today and
found that it was no longer available. The above was installed 15/02/17 and
I had contributed towards en earlier version.

I really need Libre to write my private mail.

For your information I am a very Senior Citizen (85) and this has really
upset me that Libre was suddenly unavailable.

Needless to say I have lost all the Church music I had on it and other data.

The sooner I can get it back the better.

Thank you Libre Officeus, in anticipation.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Writer - completing words - phrases

   I think you're referring to that spell checker option;
for some reason, it's one of the default settings in programs &
browsers;
but it can be turned off by going to properties.

For some reason, computer 'experts' must not know how to spell, nor
remember when to save, & must enjoy the glare of the bright light in their

I would Google this issue but I'm not certain what the phenomena is called.

I'll type in a word or phrase in Writer and it "suggests" the completion of
the word and/or phrase in dark blue highlighting.

I'd prefer it not to do that.

Is there a setting I can change to ensure it won't suggest anymore?

Thank you!

To: users@global.libreoffice.org

Hi,

I'm letting use hundreds of students LibreLogo extensively on their
computers. No problems with Windows and most of Linux systems. However all
Mac users were not able to use LibreLogo.

The commands in the menu are actually working, so that you can move the
turtle and draw that way; however, as soon as you write a script and try to
run it, the turtle appear but nothing happens. Apparently, nothing is
executed, for instance even a print instruction is not executed.

I confirm this behavior with an old Mac hanging around in my lab: Mac OS X
10.6.8 and LibreOffice 4.3.7.2.
However, the students have a variety of configurations so that it seems a
pretty general problem of the Mac implementation.

I searched these lists and other places, apparently without finding a
solution.

Is there anybody having a hint?

Greetings from Florence
Andreas

Re: [libreoffice-users] Impress can't handle eps images

2017-05-22 Thread anne-ology
   So sorry you're having problems;

My suggestion though would be to convert these .eps images to an
updated image,
  (1) before you discover these have allowed some hacker into your
machine;
  (2) to become more compatible with those to whom you transfer
data -
[Adobe is an old program, which even MsFt's software no
longer acknowledges as safe]
  (3) checking .eps on-line, I discovered no software - other than
converters - recognize this anymore.

   Hoping this helps,
although I'm sorry it's not what you were hoping to hear,

Using LibreOffice 5.0.6.2 under CentOS 7.x. Impress can't handle eps
images--output pdf contains only completely unreadable low res bitmaps. I
haven't tried Writer yet, but wouldn't be surprised if the same problem
happens. This is a huge fail, makes LO totally useless for me and many
others. Almost all of my writing is scientific/technical, and the graphics I
insert into documents are almost exclusively eps. I have written literally
hundreds of documents that contain thousands of eps figures. Converting
those to bitmaps is a non-starter, not least because of the inherent
limitations of bitmaps. This has been a known problem with LO since about
version 4.2, and several fixes and workarounds have been discussed but so
far nothing has been done that addresses users' needs. Users already have
their own projects and need software that works, not another project.

Hi Anne:

About:

(1) Yes, I'm not an english native language, but because this list
and
much more in the world are in english language, I tried to do it in english
but
It's so hard to do as you !

I understand that usually the sentences talk us by itself and
we don't need the symbols as questions mark, but I tried to do well
forgotten for example that in english you only use the last question
mark.

(2) When I made the survey, I couldn't catch the problem about the
last
button because I'm a spanish language (I found it natural for the end of the
survey). The button "Listo" meaning something like "ready" (Conclude). When
you
haven't filled the question one or two or both and click to "Listo" button,
the
process send you again the survey to complete it with a message in spanish
(I'm sorry). The message is this at the biginnins of each questions: "! Esta
pregunta requiere una respuesta" in red color. The meaning is something like
this: "This question require an answer."

But if you conclude to fill both questions the button "Listo" end
the
process of the survey.

(3) In the question one, the categories list some usually
organizations
that we would find in the world. Before the end of the list show the
"Others" option
that can select to individual business, or used by group of individuals
associated.
In the list you can find other kind of organizations (Profit and non
profit),
that you can select. In the last option of the first question, you can
describe
the name and the type of the persons, group, organization and more that you
know
that use LibreOffice.

About the size of the organizations, I really didn't think in that
! It is a
good and interesting data that we would have gotten.

I'm sorry if these kind of issues affected you and others to do the
survey.
I hope this explanation clear this topics.

Regards,

   (1) I'm assuming your attempt at placing this into English is due to

superfluous.

You can duplicate the currently open document using the Window menu:
"Window" -> "New window". You can then place them the way you want (most
desktop environment allow easily placing windows on half-screen or quarter
of screen).
By default the new window might be on a different sheet but you can also
have the same sheet open in both windows.

Have a Harley Owners Group Image, and I'm trying to insert a curved
chapter name in the image. Found a nice tutorial on doing it, but it is for
version 3.2. I have the latest version, and it isn't the same.

I've come closest in writer, but it is giving me the text with a major
shadow?

I've had the same issue using draw, but in draw, when I move the text over
the image, it goes black even thou I have set it to front. Even so, the
font is
showing as having a large shadow of the font.

Is there some different way of doing simple 2D curved text without a
shadow??

Anyone know of a tutorial for doing curved fonts with the latest
libreoffice.

Thanks.

To: users@global.libreoffice.org

hello every one.

i have three different questions and appreciate your help.

1- is it possible to install libreoffice x86 on 64 bit windows?

   [as far as I know, there is no LO higher than the 5.* version;

as to 32 or 64 machines, LO can be installed on either]

2- what's restart manager which is available in libreoffice 5.3.0?

   [the only 'restart manager' of which I've heard is with MsFt's programs;
& I would recommend dis-allowing it since it keeps the machine from
going into sleep mode - might even keep it from turning off ;-( ]

what happen if i install libreoffice 5.2 and earlier on newer versions
of windows?

[you can have more than one version of LO on your machine without any
problems;
LO is not connected with MsFt]

i use xp and not have any problem.
but i wish that know about installation of libreoffice 5.2. and
earlier on windows vista and newer.

[you can have more than one version of LO on your machine without any
problems;
LO is not connected with MsFt]

3- i wish that change goto page shortcut key on libreoffice 5.1 and
5.2 from control+shift+f5 to control+g which is available in 5.3.
i tried customize keyboard, but i only could delete it not modify it!
is this feature (customize) accessible for blind users?

[haven't a clue what your question is.]

i appreciate your help and i pray divine mercy and blessings for you.

One of the big things that businesses need to look at is who can access and
"own" the data in the cloud. I have heard of several versions of the
answer[s] since the cloud started to be used to store data. Your "power"
issue is a problem, but what happens if the cloud service gets bought out
by another company or if the service closes down.

Like any data, you NEED to backup your data. If the data is stored
online, I really think people/organization/business needs to make a backup
of the data that is stored in their home/office/building in some offline
method. That way, if the service goes down for an extended period [hours
to days] there will be some access to the data. If people not using the
cloud should/need to backup your data. I have 6TB+ of data and it is
stored on USB drives. If you use a cloud service, you MUST know how the
data is backed up. How many times has a server, that LibreOffice uses,
needed "fixes" to keep the services going. The "service is down" issues we
have had over the years has been annoying to the users, but gets fixed
quickly. We have been lucky so far.

There has been some really weird "service agreement" language that aloud
the provider to read your data to make sure that the data is not of an
illegal nature. Other seem to tell the user that since your data is on
their servers, then it belongs to the service provider in some way. The
good service providers will encrypt data that is stored on their servers.
My problem with these services is that you need an expensive lawyer to
figure out the the "terms of service" agreement.

The worse case is that the service closes down for more than a day or two.
This can be due to weather and other "natural" issues that either takes
down the power lines for an extended period and/or the building that holds
the servers are severely damaged. This could be caused by fire, earth
quakes, or really bad storms. The news full of the natural disasters that
destroys the power lines, floods the community where the servers are
located, or even wild fires doing the same destruction.

I am not applying that the service provider could have any service issues,
but we need to think about the worse case.

This is my own opinion on these subjects, based on what I have seen - via
the news services - and/or read about in the USA. You alway need to think
about the worse case so if it happens, you will not lose you data and be
down for the shortest time possible.

I have been trying to start LO in listening mode so I can connect to it
with a external Python macro. I've tried various 'helloworld' examples and
I get errors with all of them.

Such as:

Googling hasn't been any help.

Could someone please show me a short example of how to do this?

The correct thing is to _approve_ the message, not _respond_ within the
message. As such, it is _always_ possible to do the right thing.

That is basic moderation 101

Hello Tom,

It seems that the problem Brian highlighted is a bit different and is a
recurring one. Anne-ology does not seem to understand her exact role as a
list moderator, even after years of being in that position. What she has to
do is first to approve the message so that it can reach the mailing list.
Then, she or anyone else here may answer the original poster in public on
the list.

It is only about the 25th time this happens, but Anne-ology does not seem
to want to take any sort of input, however cordial and friendly, into
account. You are however correct that Anne-ology did indeed aptly identify
the unmoderated post that had been sitting in the moderation queue for
several days, and for this she of course did the right thing and should be
thanked for that.

Best,

Charles.

The way I handle e-mails is to eliminate all the wasteful space,

And since I was the first to respond to that e-mail, there was no

The tool you use to send email replies does not create References or

Please, when you are asked to moderate an incoming message, your choices
are to permit it to be posted or not. Whichever you choose, you may, of
course, wish to reply yourself. But if you reply to a message that you
allow to go to the list, you need to reply to the copy that you will then

To: users@global.libreoffice.org

Hi all; I've a bit of an issue in keeping styles consistent across multiple
documents. Maybe there's an easier way of achieving what I need... any
thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm producing music booklets for a local choir. The sources for the
material are varied: LO files for any words, plus laid-out music input from
musescore and abcm2ps (as pdf files). One song per file. LO source is
converted to pdf, and the whole lot is assembled with pdfunite into a
booklet for printing - often the exact order of pieces won't be known until
the last minute.

My problem is that although the LO files are derived from a common .ott
template file, I find that I sometimes need to alter basic formatting after
creating all the files, eg to change font face or size. At present, I
change this in the .ott file, then have to go through all the individual
documents reloading the styles from this file. It's tedious!

So, is there a way of making style information in an LO document a
/reference/ to, rather than a copy of, that in a master file?
Alternatively, is there a way from the command line of loading styles from
one file into another (I have no doubt a macro could do this; I'm afraid I
don't have the expertise to craft one though :-{ )

TIA for any advice!

I wanted to transfer a dialogue from a text document to the live version. So
I went into the test doc "organise dialogs|Edit" window and exported the
dialogue, which was called "OneOff", to a file. Went into the live version,
found that I had to edit a dummy dialogue before I could import the saved
one, imported the file. And found that the new dialogue was called
"One-Off", which had been its name some days ago. I looked at the exported
.xdl file and there's a section saying So I have 2 questions/comments:

1) Why is the imported file getting a different name? Alternatively, why has
the exported file got an out-of-date ID?

2) Is there a way of importing a dialogue without having to edit a dummy

[libreoffice-users] for the list members

2016-10-31 Thread anne-ology
Thinking the list should be aware of this, I'm sending to the list.

In response to you, Brian Barker - who doesn't seem to be listed as
a moderator BTW, I'm copying here part of the rules:

"To release it to the list, please send a message to <> which can usually be
done simply by replying to this message"

which does not state there is only one way - note 'usually' -
therefore when a message has not been released to the list,
yet I think it should be, I will so do ... & if I have
something to say in response, I shall so do.

As patiently requested previously, please, *please* don't just reply to
messages that have not appeared on the list. If you approve them, release
them first to the list and reply to the list copy. Anything else will
confuse people and break the threading. It's very easy just to get it
right; please just do so.

Sorry for the late reply, anne-ology, I haven't been able to get back to
this.

This is an internal use document only, so once it is finished, there will
be no need to change the document, unless some needed modification is
discovered later.

The fill in fields will be populated with information that changes with
each ticket in our work order system. I'm trying to prevent the form from
becoming mangled unintentionally.

So what I need, as I said in the original post, is a document that will be
"locked", but you can still complete the fields. When that is
accomplished, the file will be marked read only so when it's saved with new
information, a new filename will be required.

When switching from one program to another, you'll have problems ...

To: users@global.libreoffice.org

Hello,

I have a question about LIbreOffice- I am sorry if this is not the right
venue for it, but can’t find anything else on your website.

[you've come to the right place for help]

My friend collaborates with others/ edits MS Word documents on her iMac
using the Apple Pages software (she does not own MS Word).

[MsFt word documents on a Mac machine will not appear the same as the
original]

After she edits it in Pages, she sends it back to the others in MS Word
format, but Pages does something to it and it never looks right when the MS
Word users get the document back from her.

[it's actually still in Mac form]

Can LibreOffice both receive, edit and send MS Word formatted files -
possibly with .doc and .docx extensions, with no glitches, so that someone
using MS Word can then work with it with no problems ?

[the difference(s) may differ but there will be differences since the
craziness of MsFt's product has been eliminated & not replaced.]

If you can direct me to any further discussions on this, I will be most
grateful.

[start using LO full time & spread the word that it's by far the most
compatible, easiest to use, ... ... ...]

Thank you,

HJ

whole symbol. I created a new theme in the gallery and moved the symbol in
this (pic1, 1.). But when I try to use the symbol and drag them out of the
gallery the glue points don't exist anymore (pic1, 2.). I can make just a
connection to the points of the border (Is there a possibility to delete
this points?). Is there a possibility to save the glue points too?
I took some symbols like the inductor out of the "freie-schaltzeichen"
library and there the preview of the symbols looks much better(pic2, left)
then my one (pic2,right) when I drag my symbols into a new library. How can
I get the same quality of symbol previews?

Hi All,

I read the forum regularly but this is my first post. It's only
light-hearted but I don't see why that should be against the rules.

Using the spelling checker in LO Writer version 5.0.5.2 on Windows 7 Pro, I
recently passed over a fairly common English surname, "Ainsworth".

The spelling checker gave some wonderful suggestions, namely Wandsworth,
Wadsworth,

AIRWORTHY,

WORDSWORTH,

UNSEAWORTHY and

NEWSWORTHY (my capitalisations).

Has anyone else found some funnies. If so ,why not share them? The forum
does not have to be grindingly technical all day every day.

Fwd: [libreoffice-users] Writer indexing facilities

From: Ian Fantom
Date: Sun, Sep 4, 2016 at 12:06 PM
Subject: [libreoffice-users] Writer indexing facilities
To: users@global.libreoffice.org

I'm moving over from my old Word for Windows 2003 to LibreOffice Writer
5.1.4.2 on Ubuntu Studio.

I want to be able to do everything I could do on Word in Writer, but I'm
having problems with the alphabetical indexing facilities. I once indexed a
book using a macro on Word from the American Society of Indexers, and it
worked well. I've followed the Documentation for Writer, but am not sure
whether I'm missing something, whether there's a bug, or whether I should
be looking for some other programme or add-on.

Is there some user's guide written from the point of view of an indexer?

For instance, in trying it out, I indexed the term 'Blair' and selected
'Apply to all similar texts'. Then I compiled the alphabetical index and
found 60 entries for 'Blair'. This tells me that I need ten or so
sub-headings in the index. So, using the editing window, I tried to edit
each entry. I need to step through them. This I can do if I just need to
view the entries, but as soon as I edit an entry the step-through doesn't
work any longer; it moves onto the next indexed term whether or not it's
'Blair'. So I have to step through all the other terms until I reach
'Blair'. I tried instead using the 'Find' option to get to the next
'Blair', but that is disabled as long as the edit window is showing. So I
have to close the edit window, search for the next 'Blair' using 'Find',
then call up the edit window. The whole procedure takes 15 secs, and so
going through 60 terms would take 15 mins. I can't find any means of
deleting the whole lot and starting again, other than deleting them
individually, in which case I run into the same problem.

Can anyone please advise?

Many thanks,
Ian

Re: [libreoffice-users] any VLC Media users - enlarging view

2016-07-15 Thread anne-ology
at the top of the screen in the various menus, you should see
settings -
these can be changed for both video & audio; just adjust the way
you prefer.

As for slowing down, I guess you could
  (1) change the speed of the video
 or
 (2) insert some blank spaces - or duplicate images - within your
video.

BTW - I'm assuming you're dealing with your own videos,
because tampering with another's work would be considered
plagiarism.

BTW 2 - I certainly hope someone else, with more knowledge, of this

"There is no zoom feature in VLC Media Player but you can press the

That didn't work in my VLC Media Player.

So, I watched a YouTube video where they advised you click on the

Has anyone found a zoom solution for version 2.2.1?

Thanks so much.

Thanks for responding, Anne.

I am not at all technical so I really have no idea what you mean by LO
file-loader, or how to go about it.

   [somehow you misread file-folder for file-loader ;-)

the LO file-folder is located ... from 'start' menu, click on,
maybe, 'computer' then scroll up to 'Users' then [your personal ID] then
scroll to 'AppData' then 'Roaming' then 'LibreOffice' ... you'll find
everything there, but coded to use in LO]

I don't have a virus as I have Norton 360 protection so it must be
something to do with a version upgrade. I was asked to allow LO to make
changes just before this happened.

   [with Norton, you may very well have a virus; but let's assume not;

I'm confused though by your statement that LO asked to make changes]

Could you please tell me where I can find a previous version of LO so I can
delete the current version and install the older one? Maybe that will
work.

[if you don't have your previous version still on your machine, then you
probably can find whatever you're wanting to use at the LO site.]

Thanks again.

This has been happening for the last week or so. It coincided with Libre
Office asking to make changes to my computer whenever I tried to start the

Any document that is in the 'recent documents' option in the program itself
will open, but nothing else.
I have deleted and re-installed Libre Office and still no difference.
Can anyone help and let me know how to fix this issue? I have many

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I'd like to get the latest stock quote for Australian stocks but running
the =getyahoo("BRL.AX",36) gives me N/A; whereas if I try
=getyahoo("FB",36) which also doesn't seem right.

Wondering why the Australian stock is showing N/A and the NYSE stock (FB)
is showing a wrong value.

Thanks.

How can the words on the mail merge label be written on top of an image in
Writer?
What happens now if the image is moved to background is that a white box
with the words covers the image. If the image is moved up one from the back
then it is over the words.

Sounds like an interesting project.

Which program did you choose to convert your scanned photo into a
black-white sketch?

As a struggling actor years ago, one time I was sneaking my 8 x 10 glossy
in for a small role being cast at Warner Brothers. I stumbled quite by
accident into the animators building. They were so nice and understanding
sharing cells and sketches which were amazing and beautiful.

I can't imagine anything substituting for that kind of talent.

My little project so pedestrian in comparison.

Thank you so much!

Best,

Charles.

Subject: [libreoffice-users] Impress and Base working together?
To: users@global.libreoffice.org

Hello,

I wonder if Impress can work with Base (or something else) to prepare slides
with variable content.

The main idea is that I would prepare a customized presentation using –
mostly – stock text that would be stored either in a database, or maybe in
Document files (text only or formatted ?). If possible, there might be
photos and videos too.

I know it can be done in Writer, by using form documents (ex.: the mailing
assistant) or even by creating a book. Can something similar be done in
Impress ?

Thanks,
Michel Gagnon

Re: [libreoffice-users] delete hidden formated text in odt

2016-04-29 Thread anne-ology
If you're referring to eliminating the formatting, then I think
you'll have a non-formatted document;
if so, then using a simple text document should do this.

The only one I know that still exists is Notepad - once placed on
all MsFt machines, but now not;
I still have it - saved from my older machine - & would be glad
to upload to you if you so wish.

Dear LO users,

I would like to give away *.odt files without hidden formated text.
Do you have some advice how to remove the hidden (hard-)formatted text in a
simple way?
Is it possible by a macro?

(I am aware that you can make hidden text invisible and print the file
without
hidden text on paper. I also know how to remove properties)

Thank you in advance

Re: [libreoffice-users] Libre Writer 5.1.1.3 - space correction between text words

2016-04-29 Thread anne-ology
From a different perspective, a resume should not resemble a page
from a printed book, rather a resume should resemble a single letter to a
single company, or whatever. I know many who see those resumes resembling

I very much hope you are not. Unless you are German and using letter
spacing to indicate emphasis, you should not be tinkering with spacing
between characters within words (as you clearly describe here) unless you
are an expert in typography and fonts.

[if you're desiring your letter resume to resemble a printed page; never
a good idea;
if you're not satisfied with the appearance of the font, then select
another; for a resume, one resembling a typewriter is generally best]

I have the paragraph symbol turned on so I can see that paragraph icon at
> the end of every line of text.
>

Again, this is very much what you should not be seeing. That symbol shows
the end of a paragraph, so it definitely should not be appearing at the end
of each line of text. Unless your message has been delayed from the second
millennium, you should not be using a typewriter but a word processor, in
which text within a paragraph flows naturally between lines as necessary to
fit the page size and margins. If those end-of-paragraph marks show at the
end of each line, you have unwisely broken your real paragraphs into
separate one-line paragraphs - which will prevent the word processor doing
its job effectively. The one exception to this is if the passage consists
of a set of separate items each of less than a full line, as a bulleted or
numbered list might do in a document such as you describe - but even then
not for the whole document.

[if your resume is a listing of your qualifications then clicking for a
new paragraph would be a nice idea; inserting that blank space between the
lines;
if though your resume needs full sentence paragraphs, then choose
appropriately as you list your qualifications]

Some text words have larger spaces between the words than others. The

>

Good: you are now talking instead about spacing between words, not within
words.

Text can be distributed within lines in various ways: left aligned,
centred, right aligned, or justified. The first three modes will maintain
constant, standard spacing between words, but the last intentionally
expands spaces between words in order to fill all lines with text between
the margins. If you don't want your text justified, don't use that mode.
The mode is specified on the Alignment tabs of the Paragraph and Paragraph
Style dialogues.

Note that for justified text, there is an ambiguity of how the last line of
a paragraph should be treated. Often this is not justified, so it will
instead have standard word spacing. But it is possible to have such lines
also justified, at the expense of possibly much larger word spacing - even
unattractively so. If your text includes a genuine list of single-line
paragraphs and you have this option selected, the line spacing may well
appear strange and ugly. You can choose left alignment instead or you can
disable the justification of final lines of justified paragraphs by
choosing an option other than Justified for "Last line" on the Alignment
tab of the Paragraph or Paragraph Style dialogue.

[in agreement - expresses well the difference between the letter vs. the
printed page]

I trust this helps.

   [ditto]

It would be nice to do this task while respecting a user's software

I'm viewing a presentation now in LO 5.1.2 and if in the main section I
choose Handout view (first is Normal, then Outline, then Notes, Handout and
Slide Sorter) and then I choose back Normal -- LO is serving me a Master
slide setup.

It's not doing it if I choose e.g. Outline and then go back to Normal. It's
only doing this from Normal → Handout → Normal [→ Master slide].

Should that be reported or what?

I opened the .docx file with LO in the first place, upon saving accepted
the proposed (by LO) .docx format.

The file contained originally about 4300 Japanese characters.

After the trouble occurred, I copied TEXT ONLY into Writer, finished work
there AND THEN saved first as .odt and then as .docx (same file)

Necessity for Word format: translation agencies send me those Word file ->
expect them to be "overwritten" ->
AND expect Word files back. Which will then be sold to the clients who
ordered the translations. (translation not of file formats, but of text:
manuals, books, letters etc.)
If I start mumbling "I use only odt format ...", they will probably stop
sending me work. Then I will starve to death ...

Good evening
I am not sure whether this is a LibreOffice (?) problem or just MY problem.
It happened before, but I will describe the latest episode.

I was working with Writer on a Word (.docx) file. As a translation job I
was supposed to overwrite that file.

[MsFt does not necessarily recognize LO; had you opened this in LO or
MsFt? (docx is one of MsFt's files)]

The file contained images, tables and objects.
After being 2/3 finished, I saved the file, went downstairs and wanted
to continue working while having a coffee.
However, when I opened the file, saved in SpiderOakOne, I noticed, that
the latter 2/3 of the file were gone.

   [yet another program?]

Including 1/2 day of work.
Even archived earlier versions of the same file showed only the first 1/3.
Trying to open that file with MS Word, resulted in the following error:
"File Format error at
SAXParse Exception:
[word/document.xml line 2]:
Attribute w:hAnsi redefined
Stream word/document.xml line 2, column 73305 (row,col)"

[suggestion: open LO - then attempt to open saved document, allowing it
to translate if necessary;
   hopefully, your file will re-appear.]

The file contained originally about 4300 Japanese characters.
Even though there was nothing on my screen beyond the first 1/3 of that
file, its size did not change.
When I deleted the second 2/3 of the original file, the original size of
470 kb shrank to 130 kb.
After I retyped all the lost work and saved that first as .ODT and then
later as .docx, file size was 23 and 16 kb respectively.

[these are MsFt not LO documents.]

A different translator translating the same file (probably using MS
Word) into a different language had apparently no problems.

What is happening here?
Does this mean Writer has problems handling MS Word files?
Is it the incomprehensible .docs format?

[that's a good word to describe MsFt ;-)]

Do I HAVE to use Word for such file? Something I really do not want to do!
Is there anything to PREVENT this kind of event? (retyping my work all
the time will get me into real trouble!)

[suggestion: use LO to open documents ... work with documents ... then
if necessary, save as MsFt to send to others
  - although if they too have LO, then no translation would be
necessary ;-)]

Hi :)
If you have an hour, or few, per month - or if you could help during
occasional holidays - or 'just' as a "one off" = YOU could be a big help.

People who are new to LibreOffice/OpenOffice are a HUGE help as
proof-readers = helping the documentation make more sense to noobs, or even
just helping reduce the numbers of 'obvious' errors. Sadly such 'noobs'
learn so much so quickly, almost by "osmosis", that they quickly become
quite expert. Hence why there is always a need for more new people. :)

[helping others with these 'glorified typewriters' has kept me in the
know on these machines ;-) ]

Their team is so small that even a little help often has a big impact.

If you have no professional/voluntary experience with any sort of
documentation or writing project then this could be a good way of getting
some insights and gaining some experience - or it could be just a good way
to 'relax' by doing something a bit different for a while.

If you do have some experience then please let the team know, so that they
have some idea of how much they can just leave you to get on with it.

Either way it takes a while to get used to their systems and for them to
register you so that you can work on the "Published Guides". These guides
do generate a sundry, but useful, amount of income for the TDF and wider
LibreOffice community.

   [huh ???]

Right now there is a HUGE need for people willing to proof-read the latest
Guide/Handbook for Base, the database part of LibreOffice. It needs people
who don't use and don't know anything about Base.

   [that's me - I've never used Base]

If you do have knowledge or experience of databases in general or Base in
particular then you would be a great help for the next stage. After
proof-reading is the "review" stage to check the technical accuracy of the
guide/handbook.

Regards and good luck from
Tom :)

Draw has the wonderful feature of layers. Make a new layer and insert the
map there. Then set the layer to locked. Next step make a new layer and
insert the tree-circles there, then set that layer to locked too. And so
one, make a layer for the plants, make a layer for furniture and
greenhouse, for water and electric or whatever you need.

If you do not want to start from scratch, you can drag an object onto the
tab of the new layer. It will be positioned on the new layer where it has
been on the old layer.

If you have selected an object, you can see in the statusbar, to which
layer this object belongs.

To insert a new layer right click a tab and use item "Insert layer" from
that context menu. For changing the mode of a layer activate it by click on
the tab and then right click the tab and use item "Modify layer".

To focus on a special part of the drawing use the tool "Zoom & Pan" from
the "Zoom"-toolbar. Click and drag as if you would draw a rectangle above
the area of interest. Then click on the "Select" arrow or click Esc-key to
leave that tool.

Kind regards
Regina

How can this be the fault of the USofA ???

As for preparing grammatically correct footnotes:
these can be made in a number of ways, but should be done the
same within any single document.

That is another change which should bring footnotes to some obscure U$A
standard.

Hallo

mich an Acer wenden.
Das wäre dann wohl die größte Abzocke.
Ich hoffe das es eine Lösung gibt die nicht Neukauf heißt.

Danke schon mal

Gruß….Peter H.

Hello

I have my Acer Aspire 5742G converted to WIN 10. Since that day, there are
problems with IE, when looking on the internet I read that I am not the
only one and it is with other browsers.
The following is with me, I can push web pages into Word Pad (copy / paste)
but that does not work with LibreOffice. So also my printer is not found
only when printing web pages.

[WIN 10 is a MsFt product; LO is not connected although is somewhat
compatible with all other programs;
WordPad is also a MsFt product which has unfortuneately become
more & more incompatible to others.
If you are attempting to copy information that's on-line then the
simplest method would be to 'save as' to your computer then you'll have
access to that information even if that site should go down -
then from that file, you should be able to copy-paste whatever to an
LO word document & from there to print same.]

My question there is a solution, setting Libre?

A telephone conversation with the support Microsoft did nothing. This I
think must go through Microsoft Office and it is up to my system. I would
always have a device which is not older than two years so turn to Acer.

   [there are numerous MsFt offices, so don't know where you called;
but I don't think any of these would be willing to give computer
advice to some consumer - they would tell you to check locally, or on-line.]

That would be the biggest rip off.

[well, that's a reason many have quit using MsFt products, including the
IE browser which is so tied in with them.]

I hope that there is a solution that does not mean buying new.

   [hoping this helps.]

Thanks in advance

Greeting ... .Peter H.

To: users@global.libreoffice.org

hi every one.
thanks extremely for spending your time helping me and other users.

i have questions and i wish to find answers for them by your kindness
and generocity as always.
1/ how can i know which accessibility issues were solved in
libreoffice 4.4 branche?
i searched, but could not find answer.

[check the LO site for whichever version]

2/ from two days ago by reading bugzilla i realized that libreoffice
calc became accessible since version 4.3.3 if i am correct and it made
me very happy.
is it possible to for example: impress is accessible now since
specific version, but i dont have information about it now?

[each of these has been in the LO package from the start]

3/ whats the difference between number format and scientific and
engineering which added since version 4.4 branche to libreoffice calc?
whats its usage and advantage?

[the higher the number after the period, the more stable the version]

4/ is it possible to add images and edit them in libreoffice versions
before version 5?
because since version 5.0 the item images (crop image, replace image,
compress image, save image and edit with external tools) were added
and not in the previous versions.

   [it's always been possible]

does it work like photoshop, gimp etc?

   [these are separate programs]

i mean that is the same with images programs like photoshop gimp and
also the fonction and usage the same between the new images in
libreoffice programs which i mentioned with these specific image
programs?

   [all programs are different]

Re: [libreoffice-users] Hidden Section

2016-02-19 Thread anne-ology
Since attachments are not allowed on this list, you'll need to send
a URL in order for the list to view whatever.

Hiding a section in LO's Impress can be accomplished by merely
clicking on the slide you wish hidden;
hiding in other LO parts can be accomplished through programming,
etc..

Re: [libreoffice-users] Tab Interface

2016-02-19 Thread anne-ology
   First, welcome.

   Second, attachments are not acceptable,
so you'll need to place any document somewhere where you can then
include the URL for viewing by the list.

Now, to make tabs: you should notice upon opening LO, the list of
menu options at the top. Checking through these before entering data
should set your document as you would want it - tab can be set in this way;
then if you should wish a different tab setting in a specific
spot, just hightlight that spot whenever & choose the tab setting again.

   Hoping this helps,
