This is a feature which can be useful but it can be equally frustrating if you 
don't want it - until you learn to control it.

Easy: just go to Tools | AutoCorrect Options... | Options, and remove the tick 
from "Apply numbering - symbol: *".

No doubt some people like it.

Incidentally, another easy workaround is just to use Edit | Undo (or Ctrl+Z) 
*immediately* you see the unwanted correction occur.  This will remove the 
correction and leave exactly what you typed.
